Comparing Body Composition Measures In Us Army Soldiers, Kishani Kirubaharan-Smith, James R. Bagley, Kent A. Lorenz, Maria J. Veri
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The United States (US) Army currently uses circumference measurements (with body mass index, BMI) to estimate body fat (BF) composition in soldiers. While this current system is easy to administer, it has been shown to have poor validity compared to other modern body composition assessment techniques, such as air displacement plethysmography (BodPod). Specifically, circumference/BMI measures do not account for different body types, especially among female soldiers. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare 1) body composition measures in US Army Soldiers (BF% via circumferences vs BodPod) and 2) differences in BF% between males and females. We hypothesized there would be significant …

Anti-Cachexia Effect Of Polymorphonuclear Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cell Depletion Therapy Is Not Present In Tumor-Bearing Mice Lacking T And B Cells, Hailey K. Gorman, Jonathan Specht, Michael Deyhle
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Polymorphonuclear (PMN) Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), are associated with poor cancer prognosis, partly due to their immunosuppressive effects on anti-cancer immunity. Cancer cachexia, characterized by debilitating skeletal muscle wasting, further reduces patient survival. Previously, antibody-mediated (anti-Ly6G) depletion of PMN-MDSCs attenuated skeletal muscle loss in mouse model of cancer cachexia. The mechanism by which PMN-MDSCs contribute to cachexia is unclear. Given the role that PMN-MDSCs play in supporting cancer disease progression depends on inhibiting anti-cancer adaptive immunity, we tested if the beneficial effects of PMN-MDSCs depletion on cachexia depend on the presence of adaptive immune cells. PURPOSE: We hypothesize that the …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Tarnopolsky et al. (1990) showed significantly higher fat oxidation (FOx) in women versus men during endurance exercise, likely due to their higher concentrations of estrogen and type I muscle fibers. Prior studies support this stance (Venables et al. 2000), yet Wallis et al. (2006) showed no effect of sex on the metabolic response to exercise. PURPOSE: To compare substrate metabolism between men and women during submaximal exercise prescribed using metabolic (percent ventilatory threshold, %VT) and relative (percent maximal heart rate, %HRmax) intensities. METHODS: Healthy, non-obese men (n = 23) and women (n = 13) (age, % fat, and VO2 …

HSP72 is a chaperone protein upregulated during exercise. Levels are reduced in aging and obesity, and increased levels are correlated with improvements in metabolic health in male mice and humans. Male HSP72KO mice have increased body fat, decreased insulin sensitivity, and a loss of mitochondrial quality control. Specifically, male KO mice have increased cytosolic Parkin levels, but the protein is unable to move to the mitochondria resulting in enlarged, hyperfused mitochondria associated with metabolic dysfunction. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of HSP72 in female mice to better understand the sexual dimorphism involved in the heat shock response. METHODS: …

Influence Of Fitness On Moderate-Intensity Blood Pressure Responses In Normotensive And Hypertensive Individuals, Joseph Larsen, Jayson Gifford
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Early detection and treatment is important in cardiovascular disease because arteries are often occluded by 75% or more before symptoms become apparent. Exercise blood pressure has been shown to be predictive of future cardiovascular disease independent of resting blood pressure. However, many factors affecting exercise blood pressure need to be further investigated and described before exercise blood pressure can become a common practice. PURPOSE: To investigate how exercise intensity and fitness influence the blood pressure response in hypertensive and normotensive individuals. We hypothesized that hypertensive participants would have greater increases in exercise blood pressure than normotensive subjects during a …

The loading forces experienced during exercise may cause morphological and vascularization changes in the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendons of runners decrease in cross-sectional area (CSA) after a distance run. Understanding acute morphological changes as a result of single bouts of exercise gives insight to clinicians about how to organize and recommend training sessions and recovery and may inform injury risk. Purpose: This study aims to characterize changes in tendon thickness, CSA, and blood flow of Division I collegiate football (FB) players before and after a bout of strengthening exercise. Methods: Twenty-nine participants (height: 189±5.62 cm, weight: 106±19.0 kg, …

ABSTRACT
Several job industries require substantial prolonged physical exertion in hot environmental conditions which increases the risk of heat-related illnesses. Endotoxemia, a hallmark of exertional heat stroke, is defined by increased levels of circulating lipopolysaccharides, often caused by gastrointestinal (GI) injury and subsequent permeability. Caffeine is a stimulant frequently used among …
