Assessing Clinical Education In Nursing: The Development Of The Clinical Education Inventory, Marcia Ann Miller

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to construct a valid and reliable comprehensive instrument entitled the Clinical Education Inventory (CEI) that measures nursing students' perceptions of clinical nursing education. The comprehensive instrument developed during this study evaluates multiple facets of clinical nursing education and reduces the need to survey the students using several tools each semester. Ill The method for this study was adapted from the work ofDeVellis (1991) for scale development. Item generation was optimized through requesting existing tools from nursing programs across the United States. Thirteen programs contributed 34 tools. After the review by the expert panel for …

Integration Of Medical Informatics Curriculum Into Problem-Based Learning (Pbl) Course For 1st Year Medical Students, Laura E. Abate, Anne Linton, Patricia Wilson

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library librarians developed and taught "Introduction to Medical Informatics" to first-year medical students through the 2002/03 school year. In 2003/04, this course was restructured and integrated into the "Problem-Based Learning" (PBL) course taken by all first-year medical students. The goal was to improve resource selection and search skills, provide point-of-use learning and instruction, and to enhance the student experience. Librarians were assigned to individual PBL groups to act as advisors and guided the students through the informatics-related curriculum.

The Effect Of Computer Versus Cadaver-Based Instruction On Anxiety Levels In Athletic Training Students, Elise Buckner

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare student anxiety level in computerand cadaver-based anatomy instruction. Design and Setting: The study used a preinstruction and post-instruction survey design. This study took place in a generic classroom setting, where instruction focused on computer-generated laboratory models of human anatomy and cadaveric instruction of human anatomy. Subjects: The subjects were 29 students from the Entry-Level Athletic Training Education Program at Indiana State University. Measurements: Science anxiety was measured before and after laboratory instruction. Results: The cadaver-based instruction group showed no statistical difference in their anxiety level (pre12.3±6.7, post13.0±5.1), however, the computer-based instruction …

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library librarians collaborated to develop a web-based HIPAA training module for the medical center. Content was based on materials from an outside legal expert. Special attention was given to clinical scenarios illustrating key issues in HIPAA regulations. Librarians drafted the module which was then reviewed by legal consul, the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Graduate Medical Office. The final module was disseminated via the university's course management system. A corresponding module was developed for CME credit.

Sjogren's syndrome, one of the most common autoimmune diseases, is characterized by cell-mediated lymphocytic infiltration of the exocrine glands, particularly the salivary and lacrimal glands. It receives little attention in the literature, and frequently goes unrecognized until progressive changes are apparent. This article aids nurse practitioners in diagnosing the disorder in its earliest stages and in initiating proper treatment.

The Female Athlete Triad: Role Of The Coach In Prevention And Intervention, Michelle Turner Breiland

Introduction The Female Athlete Triad consists of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Eating disorders affect between 1-10% of adolescent and college age women (Haller, 1992),particularly in women's' sports in which leanness is considered important for performance such as cross-country running. Methods A three page 17 item questionnaire was sent out to 45 coaches of women's Division III cross-country teams in the Midwest region of the US. Descriptive statistics were run on the data. Results Results showed that 8% of coaches have coached an athlete with a diagnosed eating disorder. Of the top three topics for team discussions, 9% of coaches …

Trans-Adaption Of Successful Cigarette Smoking Intervention To Randomised School-Based Cannabis Intervention Trial, Child Health Promotion Unit, Edith Cowan University

Despite the emergence of cannabis use as a public health issue of significance in the 21st Century, no school-based interventions specifically addressing cannabis use have been reported in the literature. The prevalence of adolescent cannabis use has risen during the 1990s while the age of onset has decreased. This three-year trial seeks to trans-adapt a successful school-based cigarette smoking program underpinned by harm minimisation (HM) theory (including abstinence messages), into a school-based cannabis intervention trial. The purpose of this article is to describe the process of creating a faculty development program for online instruction. Both educational and technological issues are discussed. Factors that will facilitate and barriers that will impede the implementation of online courses are included. Many faculty concerns regarding online courses relate to the issues of quality and student learning. Faculty development activities are directed to ensure that courses are developed using sound educational theory and principles.
