Introduction
Intensive Care Unit (ICU) risk prediction models are used to compare outcomes for quality improvement initiatives, benchmarking, and research. While such models provide robust tools in high-income countries, an ICU risk prediction model has not been validated in a low-income country where ICU population characteristics are different from those in high- income countries, and where laboratory-based patient data are often unavailable. We sought to validate the Mortality Probability Admission Model, version III (MPM 0-III) in two public ICUs in Rwanda and to develop a new Rwanda Mortality Probability Model (R-MPM) for use in low-income countries.

Antibiotic Resistance: Use Of Delayed Prescriptions For Viral Syndromes In Urgent Care, Patricia Hansen
Antibiotic Resistance: Use Of Delayed Prescriptions For Viral Syndromes In Urgent Care, Patricia Hansen
Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects
Purpose: Widespread use of antibiotics leads to a development of antimicrobial resistance, an increasing global problem. The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains represents a serious threat to the public. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates at least two million illnesses and 23,000 deaths are caused by antibiotic resistant bacteriain the United States (CDC, 2014). The strategy of delayed antibiotic prescribing, sometimes called “wait and see” prescriptions, may reduce antibiotic use for viral syndromes in primary care settings. The overall purpose of this scholarly project is to explore delayed prescriptions used by providers in two urgent care settings, …
Developing Therapeutic Communication Skills: Integration Of Standardized Client Simulation In An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Kristine Weber, Timothy Farrell
Developing Therapeutic Communication Skills: Integration Of Standardized Client Simulation In An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Kristine Weber, Timothy Farrell
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
By the year 2020, it is projected that there will be a shortage of 300,000 to one million registered nurses in the United States (Juraschek, Zhang, Ranganathan & Lin, 2012). Therapeutic communication skills are a fundamental and integral part of any registered nurse’s practice. Despite the importance of therapeutic communication, evidence suggests that the lack of skill development in nursing programs is having an adverse effect on the NCLEX-RN pass rate of graduating registered nurses. Identifying and addressing shortfalls in effective communication offers an opportunity to improve this pass rate. Learning to effectively communicate in a simulated situation will provide …
Improving Collaboration Between Pharmacists And Physicians, Paras Patel
Improving Collaboration Between Pharmacists And Physicians, Paras Patel
BU Well
Physicians and pharmacists have differing but complementary roles that can optimize patient care when structured effectively. Unfortunately, these two professionals are not collaborating well enough, as patient outcomes, especially in relation to medication adherence, continue to decline. Coordinated care of patients can improve by expanding bidirectional communication and sharing additional patient information with each other. It will be necessary to continue to promote collaborative care in the educational and training stages of these professionals’ careers to build trust and understanding of professional scope. Ultimately, the healthcare infrastructure will have to continue to progress to make collaboration more available and valuable …

Course-based research experiences (CUREs) are currently of high interest due to their potential for engaging undergraduate students in authentic research and maintaining their interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. As part of a campuswide initiative called STEMCats, which is a living learning program offered to freshman STEM majors at the University of Kentucky funded by a grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute, we have developed a CURE for freshmen interested in pursuing health care careers. Our course, entitled “Drug–Drug Interactions in Breast Cancer,” utilized a semester-long, in-class authentic research project and instructor-led discussions to engage students in …

Challenges Experienced By Korean Medical Students And Tutors During Problem-Based Learning: A Cultural Perspective, Hyunjung Ju, Ikseon Choi, Byoung Doo Rhee, Jong Tae-Lee
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
How people learn is influenced by the cultural contexts in which their learning occurs. This qualitative case study explored challenges Korean medical students and tutors experienced during their PBL sessions from a cultural perspective using Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Twelve preclinical medical students and nine tutors from a large Korean medical school participated in interviews. The interview data were analyzed using the constant comparative method and classified according to Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Twenty-two themes emerged within the following overarching categories: large power distance (6 themes), high uncertainty avoidance (6), individualism (3), collectivism (4), and masculinity/short-term orientation (3). This article discusses culturally …

Building The Foundation: Utilizing Concept Maps To Enhance Critical Thinking In First Semester Nursing Students, Lisa S. Smith
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Critical thinking and clinical decision making are essential components of the knowledge and skills necessary for all nurses in order to make complex decisions that improve patient outcomes, safety, and quality of nursing care. Promoting student competence in critical thinking skills is imperative for nurse educators. Concept mapping is an active teaching strategy that can assist nurse educators in preparing nursing students to think critically in today’s complex health care environment. The purpose of this project was to implement concept maps as an additional instructional activity with first semester Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students to promote confidence in basic critical …

Transitioning Novice Nurses To Expert Nurses In Progressive Telemetry Care, Timothy E. Fraley
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
New nurses do not possess the clinical skills necessary to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing telemetry unit. The study explores the idea that nurses with less than two years’ experience may not have the self-confidence or experience to begin a career on a telemetry unit. A search of the literature was performed to identify the skills needed to be successful in a critical care telemetry unit. Established orientation programs, nurse internships, and nursing experience were the keywords researched. Patricia Benner’s Theory: From Novice to Expert Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice (1984) serves as the foundation for this …
Lateral Violence Among New Graduate Nurses, Megan Russell
Lateral Violence Among New Graduate Nurses, Megan Russell
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Lateral violence is an act of aggression that is committed against one nurse by another. There are many names for lateral violence, some of these include: horizontal violence, bullying, aggression, horizontal hostility, verbal abuse, or nurses eating their young. Lateral violence occurs when nurses covertly or overtly direct the dissatisfaction they are feeling inward toward each other. The effects of lateral violence on new graduate nurses and the organizations in which they work can be detrimental. An extensive literature review was undertaken to understand the significance and prevalence of lateral violence against new graduate nurses. The purpose of this study …
Orientation Program For Psychiatric Clinical Experience, Kathy C. Williams
Orientation Program For Psychiatric Clinical Experience, Kathy C. Williams
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Student nurses often experience anxiety prior to their psychiatric clinical experience and this anxiety can adversely affect their learning experience and ability to provide optimal nursing care to clients who have psychiatric illnesses. A formal Orientation Program for the Psychiatric Clinical Experience (OP-PCE) was developed to reduce student nurses’ anxiety prior to their psychiatric clinical experience. The OP-PCE was implemented as a component of the routine psychiatric curriculum in a pre-licensure registered nursing program at a university in Southeastern United States of America. Thirty-four student nurses participated in the OP-PCE. The content of the OP-PCE included general orientation information such …

World of Viruses
Current research in virology is changing public conceptions about vaccines and infectious disease. The University of Nebraska State Museum collaborated with research virologists, science writers, artists and learning researchers to create public outreach materials about viruses and infectious disease. The project, funded by the National Institute of Health’s SEPA program, developed comics, a book with Carl Zimmer, and other materials and programs. The project launched three kinds of learning research: 1) a survey of Nebraska adults on their opinions about vaccines and infectious disease; 2) a study comparing the mental models of viruses, vaccines and infection from virologists, teachers, and …

Fosces: Adding Another Library Tile To The Medical School Mosaic, Alexandra Gomes, Thomas Harrod
Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations
The 2014 launch of the revised medical school curriculum provided new opportunities for librarians to collaborate with faculty. Due to past informatics instruction in the first year curriculum, we were invited to expand this content as part of a new formative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (FOSCE) initiative. This poster will describe the development and implementation of the FOSCE informatics curriculum.
In FOSCEs, small groups of students rotated through simulated patient encounters in order to demonstrate their clinical knowledge and skills. Due to simulation center logistics, students alternated between skills demonstration and informatics activities. The informatics component consisted of fifty minute …
