The Future Is In The Numbers: The Power Of Predictive Analysis In The Biomedical Educational Environment, Charles A. Gullo Phd Jun 2016

The Future Is In The Numbers: The Power Of Predictive Analysis In The Biomedical Educational Environment, Charles A. Gullo Phd

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Biomedical programs have a potential treasure trove of data they can mine to assist admissions committees in identification of students who are likely to do well and help educational committees in the identification of students who are likely to do poorly on standardized national exams and who may need remediation. In this article, we provide a step-by-step approach that schools can utilize to generate data that are useful when predicting the future performance of current students in any given program. We discuss the use of linear regression analysis as the means of generating that data and highlight some of the …

Fostering Humanism In Medicine: A Mixed Methods Study On The Influence Of Humanism In Medicine Workshops On Medical Student Empathy, Marion J. Lombardi Jun 2016

Fostering Humanism In Medicine: A Mixed Methods Study On The Influence Of Humanism In Medicine Workshops On Medical Student Empathy, Marion J. Lombardi

Theses and Dissertations

Medicine has evolved to encompass an alliance between the doctor and patient, in which the doctor must understand the patient holistically (Kaba & Sooriakumaran, 2007). Research suggests that doctor-patient relationship focused training has a meaningful effect on measured health outcomes in patients with conditions such as obesity, diabetes, asthma or osteoarthritis (Reiss & Reinero, 2014). Therefore, the humanistic qualities of medicine, encompassing honesty, integrity, caring, compassion, altruism, empathy, and respect for self, patients, and others are more important than ever in cultivating a strong doctor-patient relationship (Weissmann et al., 2006).

Existing research suggests an underlying capacity for emotional intelligence (EI) …

Guidelines Are Not Evidence, James P. Meza Md, Phd, Nicholus H. Yee Md

Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates

Guidelines are inherently flawed when caring for an individual patient, because they apply to populations, not individuals. A strong competency in reading and interpreting clinical research gives doctors the power to evaluate guidelines and make appropriate shared decisions with their patients.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Survey To Assess Inclusion In Dpt Curricula In The United States, Michael Erickson, Paul Nasri, David Perrotto

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The objective of this study is to assess the current level of inclusion of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Doctor of Physical Therapy curricula in the United States. This survey provides self-reported data regarding the challenges associated with incorporating TCM into the curriculum. All 228 CAPTE (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education) accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs were included in this survey instrument. A College of Staten Island (CSI) Human & Animal Protection Office (HARPPO) approved survey was e-mailed to the chairperson of each DPT program and respondent data was stored via a secure Survey Monkey® online …

Interdisciplinary Workshop To Increase Collaboration Between Medical Students And Standardized Patient Instructors In Teaching Physical Diagnosis To Novices, Tanakorn Kittisarapong, Benjamin Blatt, Karen Lewis, Jennifer Owens, Larrie Greenberg Jun 2016

Interdisciplinary Workshop To Increase Collaboration Between Medical Students And Standardized Patient Instructors In Teaching Physical Diagnosis To Novices, Tanakorn Kittisarapong, Benjamin Blatt, Karen Lewis, Jennifer Owens, Larrie Greenberg

Medicine Faculty Publications

Traditionally, full-time faculty members have assumed major responsibility for teaching physical examination skills to first- and second-year medical students. Problems with faculty recruitment and adhering to a standardized way of teaching have challenged educators to seek alternatives to teaching the physical examination to novices. To address these problems, we created and implemented a novel curriculum that has standardized the teaching of physical examination skills to novice students by using standardized patient instructors and fourth-year medical students working as an interdisciplinary team (known as a dyad). Feedback after the first iteration of this course revealed confusion about roles, goals, and responsibilities …

Widening Access In Selection Using Situational Judgement Tests: Evidence From The Ukcat, Filip Lievens, Fiona Patterson, Jan Corstjens, Stuart Martin, Sandra Nicholson Jun 2016

Widening Access In Selection Using Situational Judgement Tests: Evidence From The Ukcat, Filip Lievens, Fiona Patterson, Jan Corstjens, Stuart Martin, Sandra Nicholson

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Widening access promotes student diversity and the appropriate representation of all demographic groups. This study aims to examine diversity-related benefits of the use of situational judgement tests (SJTs) in the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) in terms of three demographic variables: (i) socioeconomic status (SES); (ii) ethnicity, and (iii) gender. Methods: Outcomes in medical and dental school applicant cohorts for the years 2012 (n = 15 581) and 2013 (n = 15 454) were studied. Applicants' scores on cognitive tests and an SJT were linked to SES (parents' occupational status), ethnicity (White versus Black and other minority ethnic candidates), and …

Glycaemic Control In Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Among Children And Adolescents In A Resource Limited Setting In Dar Es Salaam - Tanzania, Mariam Noorani, Kaushik Ramaiya, Karim Manji

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is a rapidly growing problem in Tanzania. Children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes have previously been found to have poor glycaemic control and high prevalence of complications. Strict glycaemic control reduces the incidence and progression of chronic complications. The aim of this study was to identify the factors associated with glycaemic control among children and adolescents.

Methods

A cross sectional study was done at the diabetes clinic for children and adolescents. Data on socioeconomic, demographic and diabetes specific variables including adherence, diabetes knowledge, caregivers knowledge and their involvement in the care of the child …
