This paper constitutes the first in a series of terminal reports to the United States Atomic Energy Commission for Contract AT (11–1) 1496. It includes a major study on the ecology and life history of Sceloporus occidentalis longipes Hollowell and a comparative study of three populations of Uta s. stansburiana Baird and Girard with special emphasis given for the Uta population on Rainier Mesa.

Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Western Australia's 67 per cent lambing for 1970 compares poorly with that of other Australian States, and other countries. From the 12.3 million ewes mated in this State's agricultural areas in 1970, only 8.2 million lambs were marked.

This low 77.7 per cent conception rate sparked the present series of reproductive wastage investigations by the Department's Sheep and Wool Branch.

This report describes the first year's results of the project in W.A.'s "clover disease" areas.

Heterogeneous algal cultures were grown in laboratory continuous culture in continuous flow, completely mixed chemostats in secondary sewage treatment plant effluent diluted to give an ammonia nitrogen concentration of 10 mg/1. Variables were lighting, pH, carbon dioxide availability, and hydraulic residence time.

Optimum growth occurred under pH 7.0, excess CO₂, and continuous lighting conditions. The availability of artificially supplied excess CO₂ greatly increased the mass (standing crop) at steady-state over that produced under otherwise identical conditions for all residence times studied. Two species of peracarid malacostracans, a mysid, Neomysis americana, and an oniscid isopod, Trachelipus cf. rathkei, were used to study the skeletomusculature system. Serial sections, whole mounts, and gross dissections were made. Coxal promotors and remotors and basal adductors and abductors were the muscle groups examined.

The promotor and remotor muscles of N. americana were found to be numerous, well developed, taking origin primarily from the dorsal thoracic wall, and extending nearly ventrally to insert in the coxa; the adductor muscle and two abductor muscles are weakly developed. In order to obtain proper muscle development in tissue culture, certain conditions must prevail. There is a delicate balance of factors, and elimination of even one of these factors leads to poor and improper development. Muscle cells grown in the absence of fibroblasts usually fail to differentiate. Therefore, proper development depends upon the presence of two cell types: myoblasts and fibroblasts. Investigators have demonstrated that the fibroblasts are necessary in that they produce collagen which is necessary for proper muscle development. A study was conducted on the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to determine the range and optimum growth concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. There are only a few species of algae for which this type of data is known. Inorganic nutritional data is basic to the understanding of the complexities of phytoplankton ecology and eutrophication.

The "plus" strain of this heterothallic alga was cultured in a TRIS-buffered inorganic medium with various concentrations of sodium phosphate and potassium nitrate and adjusted to a pH of 7.4. The axenic cultures were evaluated at the end of 6 days with a spectrophotometer, at a wavelength …

An isolated perfused preparation was developed for the study of several aspects of the oculomotor system of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. The system for eyestalk rotation was investigated on an extracellular level. Two antagonistic pairs of muscles under visual and statocyst control were found to be responsible for stabilization and rotation of the eyestalk. The primary sensory input to the muscles appears to be from the statocysts, with both static position sense and dynamic acceleration components influencing the motor response. Two sensory feedback systems from mechanoreceptive hairs were found which influence the response of the eye stalks to statocyst …

Immunologic studies show that man develops specific antibodies to a variety of serum proteins of bovine, sheep, goat, chicken, and rabbit origins as well as antibodies against cow's milk protein. The data in this report emphasize that these hetero-antibodies are more frequently found in individuals with immunological problems and/or chromosomal aberrations. The clinical significance of human hetero-antibodies against these animal proteins deserves closer clinical observation for an understanding of these immunological problems.

Heterotopic transplantation of the dog heart to an abdominal location is a satisfactory experimental model for the study of immunosuppression. Rejection signs are readily detected by palpation and electrocardiographic monitoring.

Seven cases of primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube have been reviewed and compared with cases previously reported in the literature. Sterility was present in 51% of patients. There was a variety of symptoms, but the most frequent was vaginal discharge, in 42% of patients. Two patients manifested urinary symptoms and one patient ascites. In six of our seven patients, an adnexal mass was present. Although clinical diagnosis will always be difficult one should be highly suspicious of this disease in patients between 40 and 60 years of age with these symptoms.

The Symmetry-Decision Method Of Eeg Analysis, Richard M. Lee

An improved version of a previously presented computer analysis for EEG is described. The basic process used in the analysis is the classification of waves according to duration (frequency) and amplitude. The unique aspect of the improved system is the distinction between "simple" waves and "composite" waves, which are slow waves with superimposed higher frequencies. The computer program makes this "decision" on the basis of wave symmetry.

Four cases of diverticular disease of the colon are reported. The disease is rare in Japan and is more commonly seen in the cecum. Differential diagnosis of right lower quadrant pain and a filling defect in the cecum on x-ray examination is evidence of diverticular disease of the cecum. The future trend of the disease of the colon is predicted as increasing because of older populations, changes in diet and more frequent recognition through barium enema examination.

This model of placental CO₂ and O₂ exchange calculates the time course of changes in P_^CO2, [HCO₃^-], and [H⁺] in each of four "compartments" of placental exchange vessels: maternal erythrocytes, maternal plasma, fetal plasma and fetal erythrocytes. The changes in hemoglobin-bound CO₂ (carbamate) and oxyhemoglobin contents within the erythrocytes are also calculated, permitting consideration of the Haldane and Bohr effects. Equations were written to represent one-dimensional steady state CO₂ and O₂ diffusion between concurrent maternal and fetal capillaries and the subsequent hydration, carbamino and oxyhemoglobin reactions.
