A Taxonomic And Ecologic Study Of The Riverbottom Forest On St. Mary River, Lee Creek, And Belly River In Southwestern Alberta, Canada, Robert K. Shaw

The riverbottom forest community of St. Mary River, Lee Creek, and Belly River in southwestern Alberta, Canada, is a unique ecological entity characterized by poplar species having their major Alberta distribution along these streams. Stands in the community are dominated by three tree species, six shrub species, and nine herb species. Establishment of the community is dependent on climate and substrate; destruction is the result of progressive lateral stream-flow erosion. Soils are sandy loams above gravel, with pH values of 7.7 to 8.0 and soluble salt concentrations of 176 to 458 parts per million. Trees in mature stands averaged 23.0 …

Hemodynamic and angiographic findings are described in a 27-year-old patient, who had undergone surgical operation for subvalvular membranous aortic stenosis. Left ventriculography revealed persistence or regrowth of the subvalvular fibrous ring, and hemodynamic data revealed associated dynamic obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract. The authors emphasize the importance of uncovering associated dynamic obstruction by provocative maneuvers and use of Beta blockers.

Prolonging Oxygen Consumption During Preservation Of Canine Kidneys By The Addition Of Continuous Dialysis, Daniel Dall'olmo, Stanley G. Dienst

Kidneys were preserved by continuous pulsatile perfusion and their metabolic rate monitored by O2 consumption. Experiments were carried out to determine if dialyzing the perfusate to supply metabolic substrates would aid in kidney preservation. A control group was compared against two experimental groups at 25°C. Average preservation time before fall off of oxygen consumption differed for each group: control - 8 hours, dialysis with amino acids - 6 hours, dialysis with amino acids and cofactors - 11 hours. Results indicated that, if suitable concentrations of metabolic substrates and cofactors were used, the preserved kidneys maintained higher levels of O2 consumption …

Oral Contraceptives And Myocardial Infarction: Report Of Three Cases And Review Of The Literature, Mohsin Alam, Remigio Garcia, Ellet H. Drake

Three cases are presented of young women who had myocardial infarctions possibly due to coronary thrombosis related to oral contraceptive therapy. These patients had none or very few risk factors for coronary artery disease. In two of the patients, selective coronary arteriograms showed normal results on the third and tenth week after the diagnosis was established. The pathogenesis of coronary artery thrombosis in patients receiving oral contraceptives containing estrogen is still controversial, but it appears to be the result of its multifactorial effect on the platelets, coagulation factors, vessel wall, blood pressure, postprandial blood sugar and abnormalities of lipid metabolism.

This is the second of two articles on the Henry Ford Hospital screening, referral, and follow-up program for high blood pressure. The first reported on the screening results of the program, along with associated epidemiological findings. This article presents the results of referral and follow-up. During the period of March 27 through December 11, 1975, 808 people were screened; 196 (24%) were found to have uncontrolled high blood pressure and were referred to physicians for diagnosis and possible treatment for hypertension. The management of penetrating abdominal wounds has become a necessity in most larger metropolitan hospitals. Most of these wounds are produced by low velocity gunshots, but some are stab wounds. Several recent advances have contributed to the more successful management of penetrating abdominal wounds. These include: 1) improvement in on-site care by various emergency medical services, 2) more rapid transportation of the injured to a facility equipped to care for such patients, 3) vigorous resuscitative and diagnostic measures, 4) prompt and adequate surgical intervention, 5) improvements in anesthesia techniques, and 6) improvements in blood banks. This paper introduces the use of the Weibull distribution function for the analysis of small samples of clinical data. It is compared with the use of the conventional analysis of variance in determining the results of a study comparing the use of gold salts and a placebo in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Although the samples were small, 14 control patients and 13 who were treated, analysis of variance determined several significant differences between the two groups. Studies reporting a high concentration of WR-2721 in mouse salivary glands led to our studies of possible radioprotection of these glands by this drug from ionizing radiation. Oral effects of radiation in the presence of WR-2721 were studied in mice and dogs. Histological evaluation of mouse salivary glands irradiated with 1000 rads of ⁶⁰Co showed essentially no difference between control and experimental animals. Almost full regeneration of the serous salivary components occurred by 6 months in both groups and neither group had changes in the mucous glands. The properties of the coenzyme, NAD, binding site of chicken muscle L-∝-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase were studied. Adenosine monophosphate, adenosine diphosphate and adenosine diphosphoribose were sha.vn to inhibit the enzyme competitively with respect to NAD. The presence of adenosine, pyrophosphate and ribose regions in the coenzyme binding site of the enzyme was suggested by the inhibitor constants obtained for these compounds.

Disodium monoalkyl phosphates, n-butyl to n-dodecyl phosphate, inclusive, were also shown to inhibit the L-∝-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase catalized reaction competitively with respect to NAD. A positive chain length effect was observed in the binding of these compounds to the enzyme, suggesting the …

Data are reported on the screening results from the Henry Ford Hospital screening, referral and follow-up program for high blood pressure. The report covers the period of March 27 through December 11, 1975, during which time 808 people were screened in the hospital lobby. Thirty-nine percent were found upon initial screening to have high blood pressure readings or previously diagnosed hypertension. Of these people, 70% were already under treatment for hypertension, but only 21% showed adequate blood pressure control (with readings below 140/90 mm Hg). The in vitro susceptibility was determined of 274 isolates to cephalothin and two new antibiotics, cefamandole and cefoxitin. Cefamandole was comparable to cephalothin in preventing growth of cultures of the gram positive organisms except for penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus which was more sensitive to cephalothin. Cefamandole was more active than cephalothin against all the gram negative bacteria including Haemophilus influenzae and in addition it was active against many strains of Enterobacter sp. Cefoxitin was less active than cephalothin against the gram positive organisms but it was more active against most of the gram negative bacteria. In addition. It was active against …

Acute cerebellar encephalopathy is a rare neurological disorder associated with neuroblastoma and is characterized by ataxia, somatic myoclonus and opsoclonus. The pathogenesis which underlies the relationship between the two conditions is obscure. One patient with neuroblastoma and acute cerebellar encephalopathy Is reported. The occurrence of neuroblastoma and acute cerebellar encephalopathy In this case may be coincidental but, on the basis of frequent recent reports of this association, a possible relationship between these two entities is entertained. It is therefore recommended that all patients with acute cerebellar encephalopathy be surveyed for unapparent neuroblastoma. The search should include chest and skeletal X-rays, …

The immunological approach to neoplastic disease is gaining favor because malignant tumors are associated with immunodeficient states. Mesenchymal tumors have been seen in renal allograft recipients. The discovery of carcinoembryonic antigen, alfafetoprotein and other protein antigens associated with malignant diseases are other factors. Spontaneous regression of malignant neoplasm has been attributed to an effective immunologic process in the host. Identification of tumor specific antigens may explain these spontaneous tumor regressions. It may not be too optimistic to expect tumor vaccine of some sort within the next few years. Productivity Of The Roll-Streak Method To Perform Anaerobic Bacteriology In The Routine Clinical Laboratory, Thomas R. Neblett

Data presented are derived from one year of performing routine clinical anaerobic bacteriology by the roll-streak tube method. 826 specimens from 1508 (54.8%) contained anaerobes. 162 specimens were polymicrobic (19.6%) and contained 528 strains of a total of 1051 isolated (50.2 %). 479 blood specimens contained 525 strains of anaerobes. Propionibacterium, considered a contaminant, occurred 209/210 times in blood as the sole isolate. Bacteroides occurred alone or polymicrobically 308 times and comprised 54.7% of the blood isolates and 32.5% of the total anaerobic genera isolated. Clostridium, Peptococcus and Fusobacterium were the next most frequently occurring anaerobes. The roll-streak method is …

This study was based on more than 36,000 Venezuelan Streblidae representing ca. 115 species and species complexes in 22 genera, taken from more than 6,800 hats of 95 species. Two new genera are proposed and 45 new species are described. The morphology is briefly discussed and terminology is revised. Collection data are given for each species, together with discussions on variability and host relationships when pertinent. Hypothalamic and cortical extracts from various cariogenically grouped rats which had been maintained on either a Purina diet or a high sucrose diet (HSD) for three months were infused intravenously into 28 days old rats to determine if there was a titer of parotid hormone releasing factor (PRF) capable of facilitating fluid movement (FM) in the teeth. The hypothalamic and cortical extracts obtained from Purina-fed rats with 0-caries and the hypothalamic extracts from BSD-fed rats conclusively demonstrated FM stimulatory ability. Other Purina-fed groups were essentially biologically ineffective, however, extracts from HSD-fed caries groups including scores 11-40 demonstrated extremely potent FM …

Four Stump-tail monkeys (Macaca spiciosa) were used for this study to analyze, on a cellular level, the apical tissue of teeth overfilled versus teeth filled short 1-3 mm. of the radiographic apex with the Sargenti formula. In each animal four incisors were filled short and four incisors were overfilled. A final sample size consisted of 28 teeth. The time periods ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. After analysis of the histology it can be stated that the teeth filled short showed no inflammation to moderate inflammation in the periapical tissues. Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok

Four Stump-tail monkeys were used to help determine if the lead in Sargenti's formula diffuses out into the apical tissue while confined entirely within the root canal. In each animal two teeth were filled with Sargenti's formula 1-2 millimeters short of the radiographic apex, and two teeth were filled with gutta percha and Proco-Sol sealer for controls, making a total sample size of sixteen. The time ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. Lead analysis using the spectrophotometric method showed a higher lead content in the teeth filled with Sargenti's formula than with the gutta percha controls.
