Leiomyosarcoma Of The Heart: A Twenty-Year Cure, Gerald Fine, B. Usha Raju

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Excision of a predominantly intracavitary right atrial tumor, which mimicked a number ofother clinical disorders, effected a 20-year cure. Microscopic, ultrastructural, and immunocytochemical characteristics of the tumor were those of smooth muscle; cellular anaplasia, mitotic activity and tumor infiltration of the auricular myocardium indicated malignant neoplasia, a leiomyosarcoma. Distribution of the tumor was consistent with its origin from the auricular endocardium.

The Invalidity Of Monitoring Transcutaneous Oxygen Tension In Patients Who Have Chronic Renal Failure, John R. Armstrong, Thomas W. Kreps, William A. Conway, Francis Dumler, John Popovich Jr. Mar 1985

The Invalidity Of Monitoring Transcutaneous Oxygen Tension In Patients Who Have Chronic Renal Failure, John R. Armstrong, Thomas W. Kreps, William A. Conway, Francis Dumler, John Popovich Jr.

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We assessed accuracy of monitoring transcutaneous oxygen tension (PtcO2) in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). Sixteen stable individuals undergoing chronic maintenance hemodialysis were studied. Correlations between simultaneously determined PtcO2 and arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) were made both before and during dialysis. Comparisons were made with a group of 22 consecutive patients in whom respiration was mechanically assisted, who were hemodynamically stable (urine output greater than 30 mL/hour, pulse less than 130 beats/min, and mean arterial blood pressure greater than 80 mm Hg in the absence of pressor agents), and who had normal renal function.

Among CRF patients, the correlation …

Two Separable Functional Domains Of Simian Virus 40 Large T Antigen: Carboxyl-Terminal Region Of Simian Virus 40 Large T Antigen Is Required For Efficient Capsid Protein Synthesis., Joanne Tornow, Maryellen Polvino-Bodnar, George Santangelo, Charles N. Cole Feb 1985

Two Separable Functional Domains Of Simian Virus 40 Large T Antigen: Carboxyl-Terminal Region Of Simian Virus 40 Large T Antigen Is Required For Efficient Capsid Protein Synthesis., Joanne Tornow, Maryellen Polvino-Bodnar, George Santangelo, Charles N. Cole

Dartmouth Scholarship

The carboxyl-terminal portion of simian virus 40 large T antigen is essential for productive infection of CV-1 and CV-1p green monkey kidney cells. Mutant dlA2459, lacking 14 base pairs at 0.193 map units, was positive for viral DNA replication, but unable to form plaques in CV-1p cells (J. Tornow and C.N. Cole, J. Virol. 47:487-494, 1983). In this report, the defect of dlA2459 is further defined. Simian virus 40 late mRNAs were transcribed, polyadenylated, spliced, and transported in dlA2459-infected cells, but the level of capsid proteins produced in infected CV-1 green monkey kidney cells was extremely low. dlA2459 large T …

Spatial Patterns Of Plant Communities And Differential Weathering In Navajo National Monument, Arizona, Jack D. Brotherson, William E. Evenson, Samuel R. Rushforth, John Fairchild, Jeffrey R. Johansen Jan 1985

Spatial Patterns Of Plant Communities And Differential Weathering In Navajo National Monument, Arizona, Jack D. Brotherson, William E. Evenson, Samuel R. Rushforth, John Fairchild, Jeffrey R. Johansen

Great Basin Naturalist

Vegetation patterns in Navajo National Monument, Arizona, were studied over a five-year period from 1977 to 1981. Twelve distinct plant community types occur within the boundaries of the park. These communities are characterized and the dominant plant species of each are recorded. The relationships of parent material, soils, and moisture to plant communities are also discussed. It appears that discrete communities occupy soils of different characteristics, particularly with respect to amount of weathering of parent material.

A Survey Of Drench Resistance In Sheep Worms, J R. Edwards, R. Wroth, G. C. De Chaneet, R. B. Besier, J. Karlsson, P. W. Morcombe, D. Roberts, G. Dalton-Morgan Jan 1985

A Survey Of Drench Resistance In Sheep Worms, J R. Edwards, R. Wroth, G. C. De Chaneet, R. B. Besier, J. Karlsson, P. W. Morcombe, D. Roberts, G. Dalton-Morgan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Sheep worms which are resistant to chemical drenches have been detected with increasing freuency is Western Australia's south-western farming areas between 977 and 1980. These worms have anthelmintic resistance and such genetis resistance puts essential internal parasite control practices at risk.

This prompted veterinarians in the Esperance, Albany, Bunbury, Geraldton and Northam areas to survey farms to determine the prevalence of resistance to drenches and to define those sheep management practices which encourage its development.

This article describes the survey which was conducted to assess the extent of drench resistance, what causes its build-up and how it can be controlled …

'Dermo' Fleece Rot And Body Strike On Sheep, S G. Gherardi, S. S. Sutherland, N. Monzu Jan 1985

'Dermo' Fleece Rot And Body Strike On Sheep, S G. Gherardi, S. S. Sutherland, N. Monzu

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Blowfly strike is one of the major problems confronting the sheep industry in Austrsalia, with an estimated totsalcost of control eceeding $100 million each year.

Sheep are susceptible to five types of strike: body, breach, poll, pizzle and wound. Body strike, is of greater economic importance because its sporadic occurence from year to year makes it difficult to predict and cintrol. Outbreaks of body strike after rain can affect large numbers of sheep and inflict severe production losses.

In eastern Australia fleece rot is generally considered to be the main predisposing factor to blowfly strike, but in Western Australia evidence …

Ethical Aspects Of Animal Experimentation, Wolfgang Scharmann Jan 1985

Ethical Aspects Of Animal Experimentation, Wolfgang Scharmann

Experimentation Collection

If inquiries are made of people regarding their attitudes towards animal experimentation, there will no doubt be various answers corresponding to the different ethical attitudes today. Three principle points of view are imaginable. The two extremes are: an unrestricted support of all animal experiments; and a radical rejection of any such experiment. These two positions, in all likelihood, are taken by only a minority of the population. The majority will approve of animal experimentation in principle, however, only insofar as it is really necessary to preserve human life. So, the point of controversy arises from the question: When is an …

Alternatives To Aversive Procedures With Animals In The Psychology Teaching Setting, Jeffrey A. Kelly Jan 1985

Alternatives To Aversive Procedures With Animals In The Psychology Teaching Setting, Jeffrey A. Kelly

Experimentation Collection

In this paper, we will consider the treatment of laboratory animals in psychology instruction and will focus on practical alternatives to traditional practices that cause pain and distress to animals. While the discussion will draw on psychology for examples, many of the issues apply equally to the instruction of students in other courses of study, including medicine, veterinary medicine, biology, and physiology.

Three Blind Mice, See How They Run: A Critique Of Behavioral Research With Animals, Michael A. Giannelli Jan 1985

Three Blind Mice, See How They Run: A Critique Of Behavioral Research With Animals, Michael A. Giannelli

Experimentation Collection

Animal research has been a traditionally accepted and respected part of modern psychology from its earliest days. The prevalent view of animals in contemporary psychology has origins far more basic than the scientific method. Its roots are deeply imbedded in Judaeo-Christian culture, a tradition which postulates a wide gulf between humankind and the animal world. The Darwinian revolution and the ethological outlook it fostered, while of immense biological significance, has for the most part been neglected by modern American comparative psychologists in favor of a positivistic-behaviorist orientation with a heavy reliance upon laboratory experimentation.

In recent years, opposition to animal …

Anthropomorphism Is Not A Four-Letter Word, Randall Lockwood Jan 1985

Anthropomorphism Is Not A Four-Letter Word, Randall Lockwood

Experimentation Collection

Most animal scientists are directly or indirectly instructed to avoid any hint of anthropomorphism, yet it is an approach that is invariably applied by scientists and lay people alike. Science may have gained some objectivity in discarding this common view of animals, but it has gone overboard in its rejection of the concept of the continuity of human and animal experiences. I hope to outline how an anthropomorphic perspective can be applied in ways that are a service to science and the animals themselves.

The Imbalance Between Experiment And Theory In Biology: The Need For Theory-Directed Modeling, M. L. Fidelman, D. C. Mikulecky Jan 1985

The Imbalance Between Experiment And Theory In Biology: The Need For Theory-Directed Modeling, M. L. Fidelman, D. C. Mikulecky

Experimentation Collection

In biological and biomedical research, the vast majority of resources are focused on conducting experiments. Most of these experiments utilize animals. Only a tiny amount of resources is spent on theory and modeling. It is our contention and the basic theme of this paper that the imbalance between theory and experiment in biology produces very poor science. The implications of which are that many of the experiments conducted have little real scientific meaning or value and, therefore, go hand-in-hand with unnecessary animal use and suffering. Given the finite resources available for research, the redirection of significant resources from an almost …

T-61 Use In The Euthanasia Of Domestic Animals: A Survey, Andrew N. Rowan Jan 1985

T-61 Use In The Euthanasia Of Domestic Animals: A Survey, Andrew N. Rowan

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

A variety of techniques have been proposed and employed for the killing of domestic animals but relatively few have survived as suitable agents for euthanasia-namely, the induction of painless, suffering-free death. Some agents, such as strychnine, curariform agents, or potassium salts cause suffering while others have other disadvantages. 'lbday, dogs and cats are commonly euthanatized with sodium pentobarbital or with T-61 which is a mixture of a central nervous system narcotic, a paralytic agent, and a local anesthetic. The use of T-61 was first reported in the United States in 1963 (Quin 1963). The substance gradually became more popular because …

Applications Of Laboratory Technology In The Evaluation Of The Risk Of Rabies Transmissions By Biting Dogs And Cats, Donald C. Blenden, Manuel J. Torres-Anjel, F. T. Satalowich

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

While rabies is not a common disease in domestic animal species of the United States, potential exposures to rabies in the form of bites are very common and increasing. A nationwide study conducted among general hospitals shows that 1 percent of emergency room visits are for animal bites, of which 80-90 percent are inflicted by the dog (Callaham 1980). This figure is conservative, as the study did not include pediatric hospitals, the bite of victims that progress only to a physician's office, or those that receive no medical care at all. In Missouri alone, this study would infer about 1500 …
