Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to determine oribatid mite fauna, their seasonal fluctuations and the species which acts as intermediate hosts of anoplocephalid cestodes in the province of Konya. Soil samples were taken monthly from Bozkır, Ilgın, Karabağ, Karapınar and Yarma between September 1993 and September 1995. They were extracted with a modified Berlese-Tullgreen apparatus. The oribatid mites collected from the soil samples were preserved in glycerol until examination. Specimens were cleared in lactic acid before microscopic observation. Approximately 70,000 oribatid mite specimens were studied and found to consist of 56 species belonging to 34 genera and 22 families. Of these …

The Use Of Nematodes As Live Feed For Larval Shrimps, Meti̇n Kumlu Jan 1999

The Use Of Nematodes As Live Feed For Larval Shrimps, Meti̇n Kumlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the potential of nematodes as an alternative live feed for the omnivorous larva of Penaeus indicus (Crustacea: Penaeidae) and the carnivorous larvae of Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Palaemon elegans (Crustacea: Palaemonidae) was investigated. The results showed that M. rosenbergii and P. elegans larvae were unable to consume the nematodes. The larvae of these species fed Artemia for 8 days, displayed normal development and high survival (over 90%), but, similar to the starved controls. The larvae grown on the nematodes had all died by the 8th day of the experiments. P. indicus larvae fed nematodes from stage Protozoea 3 …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This research was conducted to determine growth and survival characteristics of F_1 and F_2 genotype groups of lambs and reproduction characteristics of F_1 genotype groups obtained from crossbreeding Kıvırcık to Hampshire Down, Lincoln and Blackhead German mutton sheep breeds raised at Bandırma Sheep Research Institute. Differences between reproductive characteristics of Hampshire Down x Kıvırcık and Blackhead German x Kıvırcık F_1 crossbred sheep were not significant. Effects of birth type and sex on weights at birth, 60., 120. and 180 days in all genotype groups were statistically significant (P

Exact Test For Investigation Of Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Bahar Çitak, Tahsi̇n Kesi̇ci̇ Jan 1999

Exact Test For Investigation Of Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Bahar Çitak, Tahsi̇n Kesi̇ci̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The use of exact and \chi^2 goodness-of-fit tests to control the hypothesis that a sample represents the population in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium are explained and compared with each other. These tests were applied for the loci with two, three and four alleles. The reliability of these tests depends on the sample size. The results showed that the exact and \chi^2 goodness-of-fit tests provided almost the same results if the sample size is considerably large. The exact test is, however, more reliable than the \chi^2 goodness-of-fit test when the sample size is small.

Theses and Dissertations

The study conducted in the rural area of the province of Imbabura included a total of 518 families that when compared with the estimated sample of 96%, 42.7 % corresponding to the indigenous ethnic group, 28.15% to Black and 25% to mixed-race ethnic groups, these differences of involvement between ethnic groups is due to the fact that the indigenous population is greater than the two remaining populations. Of the 518 families studied they were able to obtain a total of 794 children younger than 5, in which 48.5% pertaining to the male sex and 51.4% to the female sex. In …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

A plasmid bearing a cDNA copy of the genome of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), chimeric derivatives of the plasmid and a method of producing an infectious bovine viral diarrhea virus using the plasmid are disclosed. The invention relates to a plasmid DNA molecule that replicates easily in E. coli and contains a sufficient portion of the genome of BVDV, cloned as cDNA, to be a suitable template to produce RNA in vitro which, upon transfection into bovine cells, gives rise to infectious BVDV. The BVDV created by the process of the invention can be engineered for use as a …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated intralaryngeally with swine Chlamydia trachomatis strain R33 or orally with swine C. trachmatis strain R27. Archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from piglets euthanatized 4–7 days postinoculation were examined by in situ hybridization for C. trachomatis nucleic acid using a nonradioactive digoxigenin-labeled DNA probes that targeted specific ribosomal RNA or omp1 mRNA molecules of the swine C. trachomatis strains. Positive hybridization signals were detected in bronchial epithelial cells, bronchiolar epithelial cells, pneumocytes, alveolar and interstitial macrophages, and jejunal and ileal enterocytes. Chlamydia-infected cells had a strong signal that was confined to the intracytoplasmic inclusions. Positive hybridization signals were …

Affinity Chromatography: A Review Of Clinical Applications, David S. Hage Jan 1999

Affinity Chromatography: A Review Of Clinical Applications, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

Affinity chromatography is a type of liquid chromatography that makes use of biological-like interactions for the separation and specific analysis of sample components. This review describes the basic principles of affinity chromatography and examines its use in the testing of clinical samples, with an emphasis on HPLCbased methods. Some traditional applications of this approach include the use of boronate, lectin, protein A or protein G, and immunoaffinity supports for the direct quantification of solutes. Newer techniques that use antibody-based columns for on- or off-line sample extraction are examined in detail, as are methods that use affinity chromatography in combination with …

Potential Associations Among Genetic Markers In The Serotonergic System And The Antisocial Alcoholism Subtype, E. M. Hill, S. F. Stoltenberg, M. Burmeister, M. Closser, R. A. Zucker Jan 1999

Potential Associations Among Genetic Markers In The Serotonergic System And The Antisocial Alcoholism Subtype, E. M. Hill, S. F. Stoltenberg, M. Burmeister, M. Closser, R. A. Zucker

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Alcoholism is transmitted in families. The complexity and heterogeneity of this disorder has made it difficult to identify specific genetic correlates. One design with the potential to do so is the family-based association study, in which the frequencies of genetic polymorphisms are compared between affected and nonaffected members. Reduced central serotonin neurotransmission is associated with features of an antisocial subtype of alcoholism, although a primary deficit has not been traced to a particular component. Genetic markers related to the serotonergic system have been identified, located, and cloned. If associations can be discovered, the development process for pharmacotherapy could be facilitated. …

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare factors that may influence menstrual irregularities of female adolescent high school cross-country runners, ranging from 13-18 years of age. A survey was utilized to determine the subjects age, year in school, exercise history, menstrual history, and training regimens and where the subjects sought nutritional information. The groups were separated according to their current menstrual status. One group (normal) consisted of subjects who currently had a normal menstrual cycle for at least one year (n=17), while the other group (abnormal) (n=18) experienced an irregular menstrual cycle.

A twenty item questionnaire was administered to …
