Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: A General Overview, Julia Fashner

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) varies in presentation and the patient’s symptoms of regurgitation in the throat or epigastric pain do not necessarily correlate with the severity of their disease. This general overview of GERD will include information on guidelines and diagnostic testing; lifestyle, medical and surgical management; and GERD in special populations. The pathophysiology of GERD is multifactorial, and a step-wise approach will assist physicians in making the diagnosis as GERD has a significant financial burden to the U.S. healthcare system.

Friendship And Informant Characteristics Associated With The Agreement Among Adolescent And Friend Ratings Of Behavior Problems, Brea-Anne Lauer, Kimberly Renk Aug 2020

Friendship And Informant Characteristics Associated With The Agreement Among Adolescent And Friend Ratings Of Behavior Problems, Brea-Anne Lauer, Kimberly Renk

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

The present study investigated the relative agreement between adolescent self-reports and friend informant reports of behavior problems as well as factors that might impact this agreement. High school students were placed into friendship dyads based on perceived friendship closeness and rated friendship quality, their own internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, and the behavior problems of their matched friend. Self- and friend ratings demonstrated high levels of agreement across behavior problems presentations. Further, raters’ own behavior problems were related inconsistently to rating agreement, whereas friendship quality demonstrated some impact on the informant’s reports of specific behavior problems. This study provided additional …

Why Do Adolescents Seek Online Mental Health Information?, Daniel G. Lannin, Jeremy B. Kanter, Luke Russell, Leandra Parris, Ani Yazedjian

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

Many adolescents avoid seeking psychological help despite the increasing prevalence of mental disorders. The current study investigated whether distress and stigma exhibit differential relationships to decisions to seek online mental health information among a sample of predominantly racial/ethnic minority U.S. adolescents. In this investigation, 174 adolescents (Age: M = 15.90, SD = 0.85, Range = 14−19) completed assessments of help-seeking stigma, psychological distress, and a question asking if they would like to view a website with mental health information. Distress was a statistically significant predictor of decisions to seek online mental health information, but stigma was not. Severely distressed boys …

Do Adults Utilizing Intermittent Fasting Improve Lipids More Than Those Following A Restricted-Calorie Diet? A Clin-Iq, Mitchell A. Sanford, Tracy S. Sanford, K. F. Campbell, Dustin Davis, Tammy Tandberg, L. N. Eagle Road

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

With approximately 95 million Americans diagnosed with high cholesterol, and many searching for a nonmedicinal treatment, intermittent fasting as a method to improve health has become increasingly popular in the lay public. We conducted a clinical inquiry to determine whether intermittent fasting is superior to a low-calorie diet in improving lipids, searching the Cochrane, EBSCOhost, Embase, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases using the terms intermittent fasting, lipids, and calorie-restricted diet. Studies that included surgical weight loss or medicine-assisted weight loss were excluded. We identified 6 published studies, 5 of which were randomized controlled trials. In reviewing the selected studies, …

Magnitude Of Screening For Gestational Diabetes Mellitus In An Urban Setting In Tanzania; A Cross-Sectional Analytic Study, Akampa Mukuve, Mariam Noorani, Ibrahim Sendagire, Miriam Mgonja Jul 2020

Magnitude Of Screening For Gestational Diabetes Mellitus In An Urban Setting In Tanzania; A Cross-Sectional Analytic Study, Akampa Mukuve, Mariam Noorani, Ibrahim Sendagire, Miriam Mgonja

Family Medicine, East Africa

Background: Medical screening detects risk factors for disease or presence of disease in otherwise well persons in order to intervene early and reduce morbidity and mortality. During antenatal care (ANC) it is important to detect conditions that complicate pregnancy, like gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Despite international and local guidelines recommending screening for GDM during ANC, there is evidence to suggest that the practice was not being carried out adequately. A major challenge may be lack of consensus on uniform GDM screening and diagnostic guidelines internationally and locally.

The primary objective was to determine the magnitude of screening for GDM among …
