Background: Pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS, Elmiron®) is a widely used medication to reduce pain caused by interstitial cystitis, a bladder disorder most often affecting females. PPS maculopathy is a novel form of toxic retinal disease often not recognized or mistaken for other retinal conditions such as macular degeneration due to the initial similarities on fundus exam. However, when visualized using fundus autofluorescence, affected eyes show characteristic hyper/hypo-autofluorescent patterns.

Problem: Haitian Creole–speaking adults with type 2 diabetes receiving care in a federally funded primary care clinic experienced gaps in glycemic control, follow-up attendance, preventive kidney screening, and access to linguistically appropriate diabetes care. The organizational baseline urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) screening rate was 41.8%, demonstrating an opportunity to improve preventive diabetes management.

Aim of the Project: The aim was to implement a Chronic Care Model (CCM)-based interdisciplinary intervention over 12 weeks to improve diabetes outcomes, follow-up care, and UACR screening among Haitian Creole–speaking adults with type 2 diabetes.

An overview of the 1993 E. coli outbreak that occurred in the Northwest region of the United States. The outbreak came from not enough regulation to detect disease before being sent from production to restaurants, most notably Jack-in-The-Box. The outbreak was a terrifying experience for several families, as children were the most affected. This single outbreak spurred changes for food safety in several ways, including bringing change to other countries that trade resources with the United States.

BACKGROUND: Managing patients with non-survivable head trauma who do not meet brain death criteria presents significant ethical and clinical challenges. Decisions frequently fall to surrogates with limited guidance, particularly when organ donation status is unknown. This study assessed physician perspectives on communication, interventions, and institutional factors.

METHODS: We conducted a national survey of academic neurosurgery, trauma surgery, and neurocritical care programs. Items examined communication barriers, interventions by donor status, institutional support, and a dissonance measure for interventions viewed as inappropriate.

OBJECTIVE: We examined differences in regional surface morphometry among neonates exposed to chronic in utero cannabis compared to unexposed neonates.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) remains a major cause of mortality and hospitalization despite advances in guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT). Electronic health record (EHR)-based clinical decision support tools may improve care delivery, but their impact on outcomes remains ill-defined.

PROJECT RATIONALE: As part of a system-wide HF quality improvement initiative, we evaluated 2 EHR interventions: an evidence-based HF admission order set promoting early diuresis and GDMT optimization, and a templated HF documentation tool (HFNOTE) designed to capture clinical complexity.

Despite increasing recognition, data on gender-based differences in SCAD presentation and outcomes remain limited, particularly in South Asian populations.

Methods: This retrospective case series included 24 patients diagnosed with SCAD at Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) between January 2022 and March 2025. This study examined Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) educational exposure among clinical-phase physician assistant (PA) students and evaluated how well current curricula prepare future providers for HIV prevention and care. A cross-sectional survey of 109 PA students assessed HIV-related knowledge, clinical exposure, and awareness of key public health concepts, while lecture materials from 30 PA programs were analyzed for curricular content. Students demonstrated moderate but incomplete baseline knowledge, and fewer than one-quarter reported observing PrEP prescribing during primary care rotations. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a common hereditary kidney disorder with an insidious onset and complex mechanisms, making early diagnosis challenging. Current diagnostic methods, including imaging and genetic testing, have limitations. Imaging detects cysts only once formed, and genetic testing is costly, labor-intensive, and unable to guarantee complete diagnostic accuracy or predict onset and progression. We present a 34-year-old woman presenting with 4 days of severe posterior neck pain, stiffness, and odynophagia. Initial evaluation revealed significantly elevated inflammatory markers (erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR] 113 mm/hr, C-reactive protein [CRP] 128 mg/L) and leukocytosis, raising immediate concern for deep neck infection. We detail a case of gallbladder ascariasis, presenting as an acute episode of acalculous biliary colic, nausea, bloating, an unremarkable abdominal ultrasound, and negative helminth and protozoa stool smears. Repeat ultrasonography performed 10 days after anthelmintic therapy showed no live worms and 2 newly appearing echogenic areas suggestive of gallbladder calculi that were confirmed following elective cholecystectomy.
