Periodontal Pocket Reduction Following Gingival Curettage, Robert B. Tandy

The purpose of this study was to evaluate pocket reduction following gingival curettage. The effects of temporary pressure packing, inflammation, oral hygiene, pocket depth, age and sex of the patient were evaluated.

Three hundred twenty-eight periodontal pockets were studied in forty-one adult patients selected with interdental lesions ranging from 3.0 - 7.5 mm. in depth. Pocket depth and gingival height were measured preoperatively, one month postoperatively and two months postoperatively. The mean change in pocket depth and gingival height was calculated and statistical significance was determined for all measurements.

The different factors involved in the etiology of congenital heart disease are discussed with particular attention lo the teratogenic agents. Experimental production of congenital heart disease in animals is reviewed. This seems to be a very promising field for investigations, which may eventually lead to an understanding of the etiology of congenital heart disease and its prevention.

Adults of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni were perfused from the hepatic portal system of CF1 female mice sixty to seventy days post infection. The worms were then incubated in Eagle’s minimal essential medium with glutamate and 0.03 mg/100 ml of nonlabelled aspartic acid. To this medium was added 10 μc of either NaH¹⁴0₃, glucose-UC¹⁴ or aspartate-4-C¹⁴. The worms were found to fix carbon from the NaH¹⁴0₃ and to incorporate the glucose and aspartate. SERIOUS impairment of the breeding ability of ewes grazed for prolonged periods on growing pastures containing dominant subterranean clover has been experienced in Western Australia for many years.

The first widespread recognition of the problem coincided with the upsurge of improved pasture establishment based on the Dwalganup variety of subterranean clover in the higher rainfall sections of the wheatbelt and adjacent sheep raising areas to the west and south.

A series of experiments involving Listeria monocytogenes was undertaken to study first the fecal shedding of Listeria by conventional mice challenged intraperitoneally with Listeria and second the fecal shedding and ability to survive of germ free mice with similar challenge. In addition, mites infesting Listeria infected mice were cultured for their possible contamination by Listeria.
