Breathing retraining has been an integral part of respiratory rehabilitation for the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.). Techniques used for breathing retraining have been studied for many years. These techniques include such breathing retraining modalities as relaxation conditioning, positioning maneuvers, abdominaldiaphragmatic breathing, pursed lip breathing and intermittent positive pressure breathing. Controversy concerning the therapeutic value of many of these techniques has developed. In this descriptive case study on three subjects with C.O.P.D. the experimental technique of sensory stimulation was investigated as a breaching retraining method. On February 15, 1978, Congress enacted the Black Lung Benefits Reform Act of 1977. The passage of this legislation followed months of congressional indecision over just how the existing black lung benefits system could be reformed. During this period, the financing of the program appeared to be the most divisive issue. That issue was finally resolved by the enactment in late January of the Black Lung Benefits Revenue Act of 1977. The possible effects of ablastin, a reproduction-inhibiting antibody which is produced during the infection of the blood parasite, Trypanosoma musculi in the mouse, were investigated by fractionating the parasite into a supernatant fraction (designated as Group A test mice) and a pellet fraction (Group B test mice). These groups A and B mice were injected with the respective fractions, plus Freund’s Complete Adjuvant (FCA). Control mice were injected with FCA only. Human Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2)-transformed Balb/c mouse cells (H238 cells) are malignant in Balb/c mice. The immune stratus of mice bearing H238 cell-induced tumors was studied and changes in immune response with time and with altered diet of the mice were measured.

In the experiments dealing with the status of immunity with time after tumor cell injection, mice were fed Purina Laboratory Chow (P.L.C.), injected with H238 cells, and sacrificed three to eight weeks post-injection. The effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the wavelength region 230 nm to 302 nm on the ability of an irradiated mammalian cell to reactivate UV-irradiated mammalian virus was tests. An action spectrum for radiation enhanced reactivation (RER) Is presented. The shape of the action spectrum points to a combined nucleic acid protein target for UV radiation effects on this cellular parameter. An analysis of the results of others involving the biochemical and photobiological events involved in the RER does not allow the identification of the macromolecule which is the major contributor to this effect. Ten coronary artery disease patients were selected using purposive method of sampling and observed for six hours. It was postulated that 1) Human contact with coronary artery disease patients in the coronary intensive care unit would be associated with significant (p = 0.05) changes in the electrocardiogram such as: (a) increased heart rate more than 10 per cent, (b) changed atrio-ventricular conduction more than 10 per cent, (c) changed ST segment one millimeter or more and (d) increased frequency of ectopic beats more than 10 per cent. 2) The degree of stress and cardiac response was related to a number …

Duck plague is a hemorrhagic, necrotic disease found exclusively in the order Anseriformes, family Anatidae (ducks, geese, swans). The etiologic agent has been reported to be a herpes-like virus. The Holland strain of duck plague was found to induce cytopathic effects in cell culture (perinuclear vacuolation followed by lysis). A simple reproducible plaque assay for quantitating the virus was developed. Under conditions of the plaque assay, one-hit kinetics were observed. The host range of duck plague virus in cell culture was found to include the order Galliformes, family Phasianidae (pheasants, quails and partridges). Studies reporting a high concentration of WR-2721 in mouse salivary glands led to our studies of possible radioprotection of these glands by this drug from ionizing radiation. Oral effects of radiation in the presence of WR-2721 were studied in mice and dogs. Histological evaluation of mouse salivary glands irradiated with 1000 rads of ⁶⁰Co showed essentially no difference between control and experimental animals. Almost full regeneration of the serous salivary components occurred by 6 months in both groups and neither group had changes in the mucous glands. Large artery, pedal small vein, femoral vein and central venous pressures and extremity volume changes were recorded in mongrel dogs in which the hindlimb was perfused at a constant flow. Arterial, pedal venous and femoral venous blood gases were drawn and analyzed for measurements of arterio-venous O₂ and CO₂ differences. Paw and thigh resistances were calculated. Measurements were repeated following ligation of the iliac and femoral veins, alpha receptor blockade (dibenzyline), and dilation with Vasodilan. A convenience sample of nineteen patients composing group A, hospitalized for initial placement of permanent cardiac pacemakers, was studied. A programmed instructional test was prepared by the investiga- tors for this population. The question under study was, does programmed instruction for pacemaker patients affect immediate and delayed recall of information? Patients were pre-tested, presented with the programmed instruction package and given a post-test immediately upon completion of the package. They were retested later to evaluate retention level. This study was designed to test the hypotheses that ambulatory cardiac patients given a special teaching program would have increased understanding about their medication, make fewer medication errors, and know more about undesirable effects and how to handle them than patients not included in the special teaching program. Forty-one ambulatory cardiac patients were, after a random start, alternately assigned to an experimental or to a control group. All the patients were taking one or more of three different medications before hospitalization, during their hospital stay, and after their discharge. The LD₅₀ of Vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC 17803 for 13- to 18-g male mice, strain ICR, as determined by the 50% endpoint method, was found to be an estimated 7 x 10⁷ CFU, when administered intraperitoneally in 0.5 ml of 24-h broth culture, O. D. 0.5 at 650 nm, diluted to 10^-0.72.

The elicitation of protective antibody by this bacterium in male New Zealand White rabbits was demonstrated by testing control, baseline, and hyperimmune rabbit sera for their protective effect against 2 LD₅₀ of the bacterium administered intraperitoneally in 13- to 18-g male mice, strain ICR. …

Stem rust of wheat is probably the most damaging plant disease in the world. The rust fungus attacks stems, leaves and heads, producing characteristic red-brown pustules which affect the plant's ability to fill out the grain. Yield loss is directly related to the amount of rust in the crop and the length of time the crop is infected.

In Western Australia it is not uncommon to find rust on crops in mid-October, but usually there is negligible loss of yield. In fact this pattern is quite normal throughout the world: In general, rust arrives too late to cause an epidemic. …

This descriptive exploratory study was designed to identify a method for determining the most consistent extrathoracic landmark for measuring the zero reference point of central venous pressure in subjects with hyperinflation lung disease.

The primary purpose of this study was to find a method to determine if the external reference point that is currently being used on patients with hyperinflation lung disease represents the true zero point of central venous pressure.
