Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States; yet, despite the availability of safe and effective HPV vaccines, only half of eligible adolescents have completed the vaccine series. School-entry requirements are one proven strategy to increase vaccination rates among children and youth and reduce the burden of HPV-related cancer. This study investigated community perceptions of an HPV vaccine school-entry mandate in Virginia and the consequences of a low threshold exemption option included in the legislation. We conducted 40 interviews with community members including 15 interviews with parents, 19 with healthcare providers, and 6 with …

Journal of the Macomb Dental Society

Presentation summary: The speakers focused on signs and symptoms of TMD that may be familiar and many that are commonly overlooked. This insight provides an opportunity to better identify and treat patients suffering from TMD. Various treatment methodologies were discussed with an emphasis on the concept of neuromuscular dentistry. Neuromuscular treatment of TMD involves identifying the mandibular position that corresponds to relaxed muscles of the anterior temporalis, masseters, and sternocleidomastoids. The benefit of the new TMJ position is confirmed using a custom orthotic and definitive treatment may involve long-term orthotic wear, dental reconstruction, or orthodontic treatment. The New York State Dental Journal

Reviewing how AI literature should be assessed before discussing current published literature and how AI is currently being used in practice is beneficial. While dentists and allied dental healthcare professionals receive training on evaluating the quality of scientific literature generally, AI studies are relatively new and only some dental professionals have received formal education regarding the evaluation of an AI-related publication.2 It is unclear how many reviewers for traditional dental journals have an appropriate level of experience to adjudicate the effectiveness of an AI submission; some meta-analytic studies suggest that a significant number of reported AI studies in dentistry have …

A Study Protocol Testing Pre-Exposure Dose And Compound Pre-Exposure On The Mechanisms Of Latent Inhibition Of Dental Fear, Andrew L. Geers, Laura D. Seligman, Keenan A. Pituch, Ben Colagiuri, Hilary A. Marusak, Christine A. Rabinak, Natalie Turner, Sena L. Al-Ado, Michael Nedley

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Background: Dental stimuli can evoke fear after being paired - or conditioned - with aversive outcomes (e.g., pain). Pre-exposing the stimuli before conditioning can impair dental fear learning via a phenomenon known as latent inhibition. Theory suggests changes in expected relevance and attention are two mechanisms responsible for latent inhibition. In the proposed research, we test whether pre-exposure dose and degree of pre-exposure novelty potentiate changes in expected relevance and attention to a pre-exposed stimulus. We also assess if the manipulations alter latent inhibition and explore the possible moderating role of individual differences in pain sensitivity.

Methods: Participants will be …

Protein Expression Of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Transfected On Green Fluorescent Protein Mrna And Collagen-Coated Titanium Disk, Wasamon Swangvong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

New strategies for surface modification have been explored to promote osseointegration and osteogenesis, which are crucial factors for the success of titanium dental implants. Coating the titanium surface with mRNA encoding therapeutic growth factors may achieve these objectives. In our pilot study, we employed green fluorescent protein (GFP) mRNA as a model. Our investigation focused on determining whether titanium disks coated with GFP mRNA encapsulated with lipid nanoparticles and collagen Type I (GFP mRNA-Col) could enhance transfection in human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs), in comparison to titanium disks coated with GFP mRNA alone, without collagen. We tested various …

The Role Of Hdac6 In Periodontal Inflammation, Hannah S. Lohner Jan 2024

The Role Of Hdac6 In Periodontal Inflammation, Hannah S. Lohner

Theses and Dissertations

Periodontal disease is a polymicrobial infection-induced chronic inflammatory disease and results in irreversible tissue damage and bone loss. While bacteria play a large role in the initiation of this disease, excessive and prolonged inflammatory immune responses are fundamental for its progression, making host directed therapy (HDT) a possible and potentially valuable treatment. Histone Deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) is an enzyme that removes acetyl groups from both histone and non-histone proteins, giving it a potential role in regulating inflammation initiated by pathogenic oral bacteria. Previous studies indicated that HDACs act as a bivalent regulator in inflammatory responses; however, the role that HDAC6 …

A RETROSPECTIVE CHART REVIEW OF AVULSION INJURIES TREATED AT VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY. By: Ryan Hediger, DMD

Objective: Outcomes related to healing following an avulsion injury are multifactorial. However, contemporary literature suggests that tooth survival can be enhanced after such injuries by promptly replanting the tooth and adhering to proper management guidelines. Despite the abundance of resources available, the actions taken immediately after the avulsion injury play a pivotal role in determining the fate of an avulsed tooth. The primary objective of the current investigation is to unveil prognostic factors associated with the survival of avulsed teeth.

Methods: A chart review …
