Intersectionality, Racial Discrimination And Oral Healthcare Utilization Among Black Adults In Baltimore City, Maryland, Briona M. Phillips Jan 2024

Intersectionality, Racial Discrimination And Oral Healthcare Utilization Among Black Adults In Baltimore City, Maryland, Briona M. Phillips

Theses and Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: Oral health is essential for overall well-being, yet disparities persist, particularly among marginalized populations including Black adults. Limited access to and underutilization of oral healthcare services exacerbate these disparities. Discrimination, both individual and systemic, acts as a significant barrier to accessing care, contributing to disparities in oral health outcomes. Individuals facing discrimination experience mistrust and fear within oral healthcare settings, leading to delayed or avoided care. Therefore, investigating and addressing discrimination among Black adults is essential for promoting equitable access to oral healthcare, improving overall oral health outcomes, and lessening existing disparities.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this dissertation was …

Bayesian Rare Variant Analysis Identifies Novel Schizophrenia Putative Risk Genes, Shengtong Han Jan 2024

Bayesian Rare Variant Analysis Identifies Novel Schizophrenia Putative Risk Genes, Shengtong Han

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

The genetics of schizophrenia is so complex that it involves both common variants and rare variants. Rare variant association studies of schizophrenia are challenging because statistical methods for rare variant analysis are under-powered due to the rarity of rare variants. The recent Schizophrenia Exome meta-analysis (SCHEMA) consortium, the largest consortium in this field to date, has successfully identified 10 schizophrenia risk genes from ultra-rare variants by burden test, while more risk genes remain to be discovered by more powerful rare variant association test methods. In this study, we use a recently developed Bayesian rare variant association method that is powerful …

Dysplasia In Oral Lichen Planus In A Sample Of Egyptians Attending 2 Tertiary Care Centers In Cairo, Dalia Ghalwash, Ayman El-Gawish

Dentistry

The present retrospective study aimed to evaluate dysplastic changes in oral lichen planus (OLP) lesions and related risk factors in a sample of Egyptians. The records of patients with histological diagnosis of OLP, who attended the Oral Medicine and Periodontology Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University, and Faculty of Dentistry, the British University in Egypt, in the period from 2020 to 2023 were used. The frequency of dysplasia was 10.19% and was statistically not associated with age, gender or smoking. Our results showed that the erosive type registered the highest rate (p<0.001), followed by atrophic, whereas papular type did not show dysplasia. Also, the most common site for dysplasia was the buccal mucosa and tongue (p<0.001 and p=0.001, respectively), then gingiva, lips, and floor of the mouth. Given the importance of OLP, among the Egyptian population seeking care in our clinics, more research should be conducted to create a database of statistical information.

Effect Of Different Surface Characterizations On Color Stability And Surface Roughness Of Provisional Materials After Toothbrushing, Sarasinee Sattawatthamrong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study aimed to evaluate the surface roughness of 5 provisional materials with different surface characterization methods after simulating 1 year of toothbrushing. Specimens were fabricated from autopolymerized polymethyl methacrylate (UNIFAST Trad), autopolymerized bis-acryl composite resin (Protemp 4), light-activated composite resin (REVOTEK LC), milled polymethyl methacrylate block (DD provi P HI), and 3-dimensionally printed methacrylate oligomer (Nextdent C&B MFH). Each material was divided into 3 groups: polishing, application of Lite Art and Resin Glaze, and application of OPTIGLAZE color. After 5,000 and 10,000 toothbrushing cycles, surface roughness was measured. A 3-way repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to analyze the effects …

P2x7r And P2x4r Expression Of Mice Submandibular Gland In High‑Fat Diet/Streptozotocin‑Induced Type 2 Diabetes, Jiratchaya Srisutha

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic inflammatory disease that can compromise the functioning of various organs, including the salivary glands (SG). The purinergic system is one of the most important inflammatory pathways in T2DM condition, and P2X7R and P2X4R are the primary purinergic receptors in SG that regulate inflammatory homeostasis. This study aimed to evaluate P2X7R and P2X4R expression, and morphological changes in the submandibular gland (SMG) in T2DM. Twenty‑four 5‑week‑old mice were randomly assigned to control (CON) and diabetes mellitus (DM) groups (n = 12 each). Body weight, diet, and blood glucose levels were monitored weekly. The …
