Orthodontic wire may be heat treated to relieve residual stresses resulting from the formation of bent configurations. This study utilized electronic equipment to detect and record the initial amount of activation force, and the amount of force lost due to the intrinsic properties of the wire. The information was gathered at three hour intervals over fifteen one-week periods. The data were statistically analyzed by a computer to deter mine means and standard deviations. A general linear hypothesis was utilized to test covariants and the main effects.

Mandibular Repositioning With Frankel Appliance Therapy, Clark E. Schneekluth

A sample of twelve Frankel appliance (FR-2) treated patients, in the mixed dentition stage, were selectively chosen by an orthodontist based on the Class II correction and evaluated from before treatment and end of treatment laminagraphic and lateral cephalometric radiographs. The average treatment period was 22 months (1 yr. 10 mos.). The average pre-treatment age was 9.5 years with a range from 8 to 11 years old, while the average post-treatment age was 11.3 years with a range of 10 to 13 years.

Frankel appliance therapy was the only form of mechanics used in this study.

The intent of this study was to design and implement a computer-based orthodontic system providing an integrated information environment throughout the entire patient treatment process.

Total system integration was achieved by restructuring the entire information gathering process. A complete, evaluation of patient diagnosis and treatment evaluation procedures established five major information categories and a critical information list for proper patient management. Information organization was outlined to provide a logical progression in the information gathering process and patient chart forms were designed to implement this. ลักษณะและสภาวะทางการเงินของนิสิต ทันตแพทย์ จุฬาฯ ปีที่ 1, สุนทร ระพิสุวรรณ, สมพล เล็กเฟื่องฟู, วีรศักดิ์ เหลืองจามิกร

ผลการศึกษาลักษณะภูมิหลังและสภาวะทางการเงินของนิสิตทันตแพทย์ปีที่ 1โดยใช้แบบสอบถาม พบว่า นิสิตจํานวน 85 คน (93.41 เปอร์เซ็นต์) จบการศึกษา ม.ศ. 5 จากโรงเรียนในกรุงเทพมหานคร 6 คน จบ ม.ศ. 5 จากส่วนภูมิภาค จํานวนนิสิตชายและหญิงมีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P<0.01) ภูมิหลังทางเชื้อชาติ อายุ และอาชีพของบิดามารดาได้รายงานไว้ด้วย สมาชิกในครัวเรือนของนิสิตโดยเฉลี่ยเท่ากับ 6.4 คน การคาดการณ์ สภาวะทาง การเงินของนิสิตโดยอิงรายได้ของครัวเรือนต่อเดือน จํานวนสมาชิก และค่าใช้จ่าย รายคนต่อเดือน ของประชากรในกรุงเทพมหานคร พบว่า นิสิตจํานวน 12 คน (13.19 เปอร์เซ็นต์) คงจะประสบปัญหาทางการเงินระหว่างเรียนทันตแพทยศาสตร์ 20 คน (21.98 เปอร์เซ็นต์) อาจจะประสบหรือไม่ประสบปัญหาเงินทองระหว่าง เรียนและนิสิตอีก 59 คน (64.83 เปอร์เซ็นต์)ไม่น่าจะมีปัญหาใด ๆ ทางการ เงินระหว่างเรียนทันตแพทยศาสตร์

โดยเหตุที่นิสิตชั้นปีที่ 5 และ 6 มีอิสระในการกําหนดว่าตนจะปฏิบัติงาน ใดในเวลาปฏิบัติงานของคลินิครวม (ทันตกรรมหัตถการ ทันตกรรมประดิษฐ์ ปริทันตวิทยา และทันตกรรมบดเคี้ยว) การศึกษานี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์ ปริมาณงานปริทันต์ของนิสิต วิชาปริทันตวิทยากําหนด ในปีการศึกษา 2525 นิสิตชั้นปีที่ 5 จํานวน 66 คน และนิสิตชั้นปีที่ 6 มีจํานวน 73 คน นิสิตทุกคนบันทึกเวลาเริ่มต้น และเวลาสิ้นสุด ทุกครั้งที่ปฏิบัติงานปริทันต์ เมื่อจบปีการศึกษา นิสิตแต่ละชั้นปีถูกจัดเรียงจากคะแนน สูงสุดไปต่ำสุด ซึ่งขึ้นกับปริมาณงานปริทันต์ที่ทําได้ นิสิตกลุ่มคะแนนสูง กลุ่มคะแนนมัธยฐาน และกลุ่มคะแนนต่ำ กลุ่มละ 15 คน ในแต่ละชั้นปี ใช้เป็นตัวอย่างในการศึกษา

In analyzing the literatures, there is no convincing evidence that the permanent splinting of mobile teeth save teeth. There are no reports that splinting prevents teeth from periodontal disease, or that non-splinted teeth with mobility or secondary trauma are lost sooner than teeth when splinted. Some research does add validity to the usage of the post-orthodontic retention, splinting of removable partial denture abutment teeth, and temporary splinting to allow optimum healing during or after certain periodontal procedures. ทําการทดลองโดยตัด superior cervical ganglion ด้านขวาในหนู (Swiss Webster mice) เพศเมีย อายุ 8 สัปดาห์ ต่อมาอีก 3 เดือนจึงตัดเอา submandibular และ major sublingual salivary glands ออกมาศึกษา ผลปรากฏว่าปริมาตรและน้ำหนักของ submandibular gland ข้างซ้ายในกลุ่มทดลอง (experimental animals) เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างเห็นได้ชัดเจนเมื่อนําไปเปรียบเทียบกับต่อมข้างเดียวกันในกลุ่มเปรียบเทียบ (sham-operated animals) โดย P-value ของปริมาตร <0.001 และ P-value ของน้ำหนัก (0.003 และเมื่อเปรียบเทียบปริมาตรของ submandibular gland ใน experimental animals พบว่าต่อมด้านขวามีปริมาตรน้อยกว่าต่อมด้านซ้ายอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทาง สถิติ (P <0.005) ส่วนปริมาตรและน้ำหนักของ major sublingual gland ด้านซ้ายและขวาในทั้ง experimental และ sham-operated animals แตกต่างกัน แต่ไม่มีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ

ได้ทําการประเมินผลทัศนคติของนิสิตทันตแพทย์ไทยกลุ่มหนึ่งต่อผู้สูงอายุ โดยใช้เครื่องมือสีแมนติค ดิฟเฟอร์เรนเชียล (Semantic Differential) ได้เปรียบเทียบผล ของการศึกษานี้กับการศึกษาในนิสิตทันตแพทย์ไทย และนิสิตทันตแพทย์อเมริกาที่แล้วมา ในการศึกษานี้นิสิตทันตแพทย์ไทยตอบคําถามต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวกับคนสูงอายุ (60 ปี) เป็น ภาษาไทย และภาษาอังกฤษ โดยแบ่งนิสิตออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม กลุ่มแรกตอบคําถามที่เป็นภาษาไทยก่อน และกลุ่มหลังตอบคําถามที่เป็นภาษาอังกฤษก่อน หลังจากนั้นเป็นเวลา 8 สัปดาห์ วิธีการตอบคําตอบให้ทําสลับกัน (Reversed) ในการศึกษานี้ได้บันทึกข้อมูล ที่เกี่ยวกับสังคมศาสตร์ และประชากรศาสตร์ไว้เช่นกัน

น้ำตาลและฟลูออไรด์เป็นปัจจัยสําคัญของโรคฟันผุ ในส่วนที่เป็นสาเหตุของการเกิดโรคและการป้องกันโรคตามลําดับ การศึกษานี้ได้ศึกษาถึงปริมาณน้ำตาลและฟลูออไรด์ ในกลุ่มตัวอย่าง 2 กลุ่ม ซึ่งมีเศรษฐานะและการศึกษาต่างกัน ในกรุงเทพมหานคร โดย เปรียบเทียบกับจํานวนโรคฟันผุ เพื่อหาความสัมพันธ์ของปริมาณน้ำตาลและฟลูออไรด์กับ โรคฟันผุ ปรากฏผลว่าในกลุ่มตัวอย่างที่มีเศรษฐานะและการศึกษาดีได้รับน้ำตาลมากกว่า ซึ่งสัมพันธ์กับจํานวนโรคฟันผุ (DMF) ที่มีมากกว่ากลุ่มที่มีเศรษฐานะและการศึกษาด้อยด้วย อันอาจเป็นแนวทางในการป้องกันโรคฟันผุ โดยการเน้นถึงความร้ายแรงของน้ำตาล ที่เป็นสาเหตุสําคัญของโรคฟันผุ โดยเฉพาะในกลุ่มเศรษฐานะและการศึกษาดีดังกล่าว ส่วนปริมาณฟลูออไรด์ที่ได้รับทั้งสองกลุ่มไม่มีความแตกต่างกัน จึงไม่สัมพันธ์กับโรคฟันผุ ที่มีจํานวนแตกต่างกัน ซึ่งเข้าใจว่าจากแบบสอบถามเรื่องฟลูออไรด์ ที่เน้นการได้รับฟลูออไรด์ในระบบทั่วร่างกายเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ซึ่งไม่มีผลในผู้ใหญ่ ในขณะที่ในส่วนของ การได้รับฟลูออไรด์ในระบบเฉพาะที่ยังไม่ชัดเจนพอที่จะให้ผลในด้านความสัมพันธ์กับโรคฟันผุในการศึกษานี้

เยื่อบุหัวใจอักเสบเนื่องจากการติดเชื้อ อาจมีสาเหตุของการเกิดจากปัจจัยหลายอย่าง โดยมีความผิดปกติของหัวใจและหลอดเลือดใหญ่ เป็นปัจจัยชักจูง โดยทั่วไปแล้วยอมรับ กันว่าโรคหัวใจรูมาติก เป็นปัจจัยชักจูงสําคัญยิ่ง ภาวะติดเชื้อในกระแสโลหิต ซึ่งอาจเกิดขึ้นในขณะทําศัลยกรรม รวมทั้งการบําบัดทางทันตกรรมที่มีเลือดออกตลอดจนพยาธิสภาพ ในช่องปาก จะเป็นปัจจัยสนับสนุน ส่วนจุลินทรีย์ที่เป็นต้นเหตุของโรคนี้มีหลายชนิด ที่พบบ่อยที่สุดคือ Viridans Streptococci นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าภาวะโลหิตเป็นพิษก็สามารถทําให้ผู้ที่หัวใจปกติมีอาการของเยื่อบุหัวใจอักเสบได้ เนื่องจากความรุนแรงของโรคและอัตราตายของผู้ป่วยสูง ถึงแม้ผู้ป่วยจะมีชีวิตรอดก็ต้องทนทุกข์ทรมานหลายอย่างอันเป็นผลตาม ของโรค จึงจําเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่แพทย์และทันตแพทย์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับผู้ป่วยจะต้องเอาใจใส่ดูแลผู้ป่วยเหล่านี้เป็นพิเศษ การให้ยาต้านจุลชีพอย่างเหมาะสม (ทั้งชนิดและขนาด) สามารถ ป้องกันผู้ป่วยจากเยื่อบุหัวใจอักเสบได้

รายงานนี้ กล่าวถึงผู้ป่วยชายไทยที่มีก้อนใต้ลิ้นบริเวณพื้นของปาก (Floor of mouth) ทางด้านซ้าย มีประวัติเป็นมาประมาณ 1 ปี ได้ให้การรักษาโดยการผ่าตัดควักเอาก้อนทูม (Tumor) ออกทั้งก้อน ผลการตรวจทางพยาธิวิทยา พบว่าเป็น อะดีนอยด์ ซีสติค คาร์ซิโนม่า ของต่อมน้ำลายเล็ก หลังจากนั้นอีก 1 เดือน คนไข้มาหาอีกครั้ง พบว่ามีก้อนเกิดขึ้นบริเวณใต้กรามข้างซ้าย (Left submandibular region) ลักษณะแข็ง ซึ่งคนไข้ไม่เคยเป็นมาก่อน ได้ทําการตัดชิ้นเนื้อส่วนหนึ่งไปตรวจทางพยาธิวิทยา พบว่า เป็น ต่อมน้ำลายอักเสบ (Salivary gland Sialadenitis) จึงได้ทําการผ่าตัด ควักเอา ต่อมน้ำลายใต้กรามข้างซ้ายออกทั้งก้อน ขณะนี้กําลังติดตามคนไข้ และคนไข้ยังมีชีวิตอยู่
