Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Of the four time of planting trials twodefinitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield (graph) lies between 8 and …

Comments on results New land sites (Graphs 1 & 2) The three sites were very responsive with the point of inflexion about 600 kg/ha super rate (similar to 1972 result). The seed x super rate interaction shows the quicker response to super with .higher seeding rates. Low super bank (800 kg/ha) (GRAPH 3) The two sites showed very little response to super applied. On the Eradu sandplain no response to super for either Unicrop or Wheat. On the Watheroo yellow sandplain ( 73M015) the two lupin cultivers and the wheat gave different responses. High super bank ( >1 OOOkg/ha) (GRAPH …

Management Of Dry Land Lucerne In The South-West, R Sprivulis
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
MANY dry land lucerne stands have been successfully established in the dairying areas of the South-West.
With good management these can remain productive for many years; poor management can greatly reduce their productive life.

Cotton Bush (Asclepias Fruticosa L.) : Garden Plant Now A Noxious Weed, G R W Meadly
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE cotton bush is native to South Africa but is now naturalised in most tropical and sub-tropical countries of the world. Its spread is, in no small measure, due to being grown frequently as a garden subject.

The Control Of Weeds In Linseed And Rape, Geoffrey A. Pearce
The Control Of Weeds In Linseed And Rape, Geoffrey A. Pearce
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Like all crops linseed and rapeseed can suffer from weed competition.
Linseed is highly susceptible to weed competition, while rape is susceptible to the chemicals used to kill broad-leaved weeds, so both crops pose special problems.
As in other broad-acre crops, cultural methods usually provide the best means of weed control.

"1970· Progress Eight of the 5 unreplicated trials were cropped without fertiliser. Seven were harvested (severe weed infestation ruined 66KA 7). Three trials left under pasture responded to the fertiliser treatments and were cut for dry matter production. The remaining four trials left under pasture grew badly, became weed dominant and were not rated for growth differences between treatments or cut for dry matter production. The replicated trials at Avondale and Newdegate were also cropped, without fertiliser. The replicated trials at Wongan Hills Research Station and Chapman did not visually respond to treatments and were not cut. 69WHl5 succumbed to …

Progress In Research On Noxious Weeds, Geoffrey A. Pearce
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
RESEARCH on noxious weeds has enabled the development of many practical methods for the control of these weeds.
Where the recommended treatments have been accepted by farmers, large scale operations have reduced the areas infested and stopped spread into new paddocks.

The Protection Of Primary Production : The Role Of The Agriculture Protection Board Of Western Australia, A R. Tomlinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE main function of the Agriculture Protection Board of W.A. is, as its name implies, "protection", and, in this case, it is the State's primary production which is being protected from pest animals, birds and weeds.
In general, the Board's activities are centred on the prevention, destruction or management of animals and plants which are troublesome to agricultural or pastoral production, or are capable of being troublesome.

CAPE TULIP is the worst weed in the Avon Valley and northern areas of the Great Southern districts.
It occurs elsewhere to a limited extent but even then it is regarded as a serious weed.

Rivers flowing to the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Timor Sea have been estimated by hydrologists to carry about three times the water transported annually over the Murray drainage system and the South Eastern slopes which, together, comprise the highly settled agricultural areas of South Eastern Australia.
In 1945, the North Australian Development Committee recommended research in the Ord-Victoria rivers region as a first step toward ultimate agricultural development of this Northern potential and, in 1946, the Kim- berley Research Station commenced operations under the joint control of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization and the Western Australian Department …

Control Of Weeds In Garden Areas, Geoffrey A. Pearce
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE present-day gardener does not appear to relish the tedious job of removing weeds by hand. It is a never-ending task and no sooner is one germination controlled than another appears.
Modern herbicides provide a ready answer for overcoming the weed problem in the home garden, but it is essential to select the correct chemical and to understand its limitations.

The Recent Story Of Skeleton Weed : A Menace To Our Wheat Industry, G R W Meadly
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
SKELETON WEED was first found in Western Australia at Ballidu in 1963.
No further recording was made until December of last year when a small area was located near Esperance, but, within a brief period, plants were reported from Geraldton and Kwinana.
