Wiping Out Tall Weeds, Brad Rayner
Wiping Out Tall Weeds, Brad Rayner
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Control of weeds is an on-going battle for farmers, with many weapons becoming increasingly expensive. A refreshing exception to this trend is the blanket wiper, a cheap but effective meens of applying herbicides to taller weeds in pasture. Brad Rayner explains how it works.

Native Vegetation Handbook For The Shire Of Narrogin, Shaun B. Grein
Native vegetation handbook series
The management of native vegetation and agricultural land is closely related. It is vital that both native vegetation and agricultural land issues are considered within the context of their ecological area of influence. Both have a wide range of effects on each other and as a consequence should be managed together. For example native vegetation impacts on the hydrology of agricultural land. Conversely nutrients can be transferred from agricultural land to remnants of native vegetation. This booklet is one of a series covering the agricultural region of Western Australia and provides agricultural land managers with information relating to the natural …

Crops In The Woolbelt : Current Options And Emerging Prospects, Wal Anderson, Ross Gilmour, Robyn Mclean, Peter Nelson, K H.M Siddique, Paul Carmody, Ian Prtichard
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
It has traditionally been more profitable to grow sheep for wool in the medium rainfall parts of the south-west of Western Australia than to grow crops . Crop production has been difficult owing to the hilly terrain, the frequency of waterlogging, the high incidence of damaging frosts in some areas, the frequency of losses from diseases, difficulties with wet weather at harvest, and a lack of adapted crop varieties.
Advances over the past decade have made cropping on a limited scale potentially profitable in the woo/belt.
This article is intended to bring the various options for crop production to the …

This workshop grew out of a conversation between Maurice Barnes, a Trayning farmer and member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Dryland Research Institute, and Steve Porritt, the officer in charge of the Dryland Research Institute at Merredin. Maurice was interested in the idea of posing the question 'What would agriculture be like if we had known as much about this landscape in 1829 as we know now?', to a group of farmers and others interested in the central wheatbelt and its future. Maurice saw this question as a first step toward achieving some shared vision for the future …

A computer program called NPDECIDE has been developed by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture to assist with decisions relating to the use of phosphorus fertiliser on cereal crops. NPDECIDE functions by estimating the response of the crop to combinations of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilisers, and by indicating the likely profit from the use of these materials. In order to carry out this task, NPDECIDE must be able to calculate the availability to the growing plants of nitrogen from the fertilisers and from organic material in the soil.
Using Goats To Control Weeds, John Peirce
Using Goats To Control Weeds, John Peirce
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Feral goats are common in the woodland and tall shrubland areas of arid Australia. They survive and reproduce despite regular shooting, capture and droughts. These goats are considered vermin in Western Australia because of their competition with sheep for forage and their reputation as destroyers of vegetation. Research elsewhere, however, has indicated that it is only the uncontrolled grazing by large numbers of goats that causes degradation, in the same way that uncontrolled grazing by sheep can cause erosion. To some people, however, feral goats are a valuable source of income. They have the potential for meat sales, and they …
Economics Of Summer Weed Control., T. Piper
Economics Of Summer Weed Control., T. Piper
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Aims: To test various chemical options for summer weed control; measuring their efficacy, the amount of soil moisture conserved, and follow-up crop yield. A full season cost-benefit could then be produced. Summer rains were widespread in 1990, and summer weed sites were plentiful.
Trial 90A3
Location: Avondale.
This site had adequate moisture for most of the summer. Weeds were growing well when sprayed, and were readily controlled. (df. Wongan Hills). 2,4-D/diuron gave excellent control at the time of spraying but follow-up germinations marred the result.
Trial 90M6
Location: Merredin.
All treatments have failed at this site. Large doublegee and melons …

Monitoring Western Australia's Rangelands, Ron Hacker, David Beurle, George Gardiner
Monitoring Western Australia's Rangelands, Ron Hacker, David Beurle, George Gardiner
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Rangelands, native pastures used for grazing domestic livestock, occupy about 100 million hectares or 40 per cent of Western Australia, extending from the tropical grasslands of the Kimberley to the arid shrub steppe of the Nullarbor Plain.
The rangelands are characterized by highly variable seasonal conditions. Carrying capacity can fluctuate dramatically from year to year. Grazing management requires a tactical approach from one season to the next because of the great variation in the capacity of the land to support stock.
Rangeland monitoring provides pastoralists with objective information on these changes to assist their management decision making. The Western Australian …
