Minimum tillage trials 1977. Locations: Wongan Hills R.S., Avondale, Merredin, Mt. Barker, Esperance. Sites: At each station two sites were used, the first was under crop in 1976 and the trial will be repeated each year on the same area. The second site was under pasture in 1976 and was due to be cropped in 1977 as part of the normal district practice. The trials will be planted on a similar pasture site in 1978. Results. Since 1974 pegged areas on the three research stations have been under continuous pasture and have been sampled annually to study the fate of the viable doublegee seed population. Each site was sprayed for doublegee control in the growing season before the first samples were taken in late summer of 73/74. The sites were again sprayed in the 1974 growing season except for Wongan Hills. In 1975/76 two varieties of sunflower, Hysun 10 and Hysun 20, as well as Safflower (Gila) were grown in a large alternative crop demonstration. Results were sufficiently good to warrant more and closer examination. This led to the present variety trial using varieties suggested by Mr. M. Poole. The aim was to evaluate six sunflower varieties and one safflower. The work was carried out in the light of reduced profitability of peas, beans and some fruit crops.
