Cover Cropping Strategies For Improving Weed Suppression, Yashar Askarzadeh Jan 2025

Cover Cropping Strategies For Improving Weed Suppression, Yashar Askarzadeh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cover crops (CCs) play an essential role in sustainable agriculture by providing multiple ecosystem services. However, adoption remains low due to concerns about economic returns, management complexity, and potential yield reductions in cash crops. Applying CCs uniformly across fields without accounting for spatial variability can result in inconsistent outcomes. A precision cover cropping system (PCCS), which incorporates site-specific management zones (MZs), offers a more targeted approach to improving performance while minimizing costs and uncertainties. This study explores the interaction between CCs and field variability through complementary field and greenhouse experiments. The field experiment demonstrates that field heterogeneity significantly influences CC …

Improving Reduced Tillage Vegetable Systems For The Northern Great Plains: How Does Early Season Soil Tarping (Solarization And Occultation) Reduce Weeds, Affect Soil Health, And Protect Yield?, Hannah Voye Jan 2025

Improving Reduced Tillage Vegetable Systems For The Northern Great Plains: How Does Early Season Soil Tarping (Solarization And Occultation) Reduce Weeds, Affect Soil Health, And Protect Yield?, Hannah Voye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil tarping (solarization and occultation) is a no-till weed management practice gaining popularity in the United States for small scale vegetable growers. While many studies have been conducted using variations of this tool in the Northeast United States, minimal research has been done in the windier, sunnier, Midwest climate. Our research explored the effectiveness of early spring solarization and occultation to manage weeds and produce viable onion yield in Eastern South Dakota. Occultation tarps placed in early spring included double sided black and white silage tarps with tarps placed black side up or white side up, each placed 6-, 4-, …

Flora Of Doe Mountain Recreation Area, Johnson County, Tennessee, Benjamin Mccullough Aug 2022

Flora Of Doe Mountain Recreation Area, Johnson County, Tennessee, Benjamin Mccullough

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A botanical inventory of Doe Mountain Recreation Area (DMRA) in northeastern Tennessee was conducted to help guide conservation-based management. A total of 484 species were found in DMRA, comprising 94 families, and 285 genera, 10 species listed in the state rare plant list, and 76 exotic species. Two species, Liatris virgata and Lycopodiella inundata, were new state records. Water in the Lycopodiella seep was an order of magnitude more acid than at other sites. An analysis of the wildland-urban interface showed that only 13% of the area was classified as uninhabited. The inventory-invasion index, introduced to quantify the relative …

Restoration Through Reassembly: Evaluating The Role Of Native Plants In Combatting Chinese Tallow, Olaniyi Ajala May 2022

Restoration Through Reassembly: Evaluating The Role Of Native Plants In Combatting Chinese Tallow, Olaniyi Ajala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Non-native, invasive species disrupt ecological processes and functions, posing a serious threat to natural ecosystems. By examining the growth metrics of the non-native, invasive tree, Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera [L.] Roxb.), hereafter tallow, across different flooding and light regimes, I investigated how restructuring native communities with valuable native species will prevent the reestablishment of tallow. I studied the changes in morphological and physiological traits of tallow when growing with water tupelo (Nyssa aquatica L.), sugarberry (Celtis occidentalis L.), and green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marshall). I found that in the non-flooded and high irradiance treatments, tallow's growth …

Air-Propelled Organic Fertilizer Grits Can Be Used To Control Weeds And Provide Nitrogen, Michael Carlson Jan 2018

Air-Propelled Organic Fertilizer Grits Can Be Used To Control Weeds And Provide Nitrogen, Michael Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Weeds are one of the biggest challenges for organic growers because of the alternative weed control methods. Air-propelled abrasive grit management has been reported to control weed seedlings in corn and soybeans while maintaining yield. This research examined the weed control, corn and soybean yields, nitrogen mineralization, and nitrogen yield responses from grits. The grits used in this research included: Phytaboost Plant Food 7-1-2 (soybean meal), Sustane 8-2-4 and 4-6-4 (turkey litters), and two non-fertilizer grits: Agra Grit (walnut shells) and corn cob meal. Field studies were conducted from 2015 to 2017 in Aurora, SD, Beresford, SD and Morris, MN. …

Palmer Amaranth In South Dakota: Growth, Herbicidal Control, And Soybean Yield Loss, Brian Van De Stroet Jan 2018

Palmer Amaranth In South Dakota: Growth, Herbicidal Control, And Soybean Yield Loss, Brian Van De Stroet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Palmer amaranth is a growing concern in the United States. Previously thought to only be able to occupy the southern United States, this plant can now be found throughout the northern states as well. Infestations of Palmer amaranth can now be found in South Dakota and is raising many concerns. Palmer amaranth is characterized by large growth and can be highly competitive with many important crops. Soybean is an important crop in South Dakota, as well as the rest of the world, and has not escaped the detrimental aspects of an infestation of Palmer amaranth. The objectives of this study …

Analyzing The Phenologic Dynamics Of Kudzu (Pueraria Montana) Infestations Using Remote Sensing And The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index., Faye Peters May 2016

Analyzing The Phenologic Dynamics Of Kudzu (Pueraria Montana) Infestations Using Remote Sensing And The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index., Faye Peters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Non-native invasive species are one of the major threats to worldwide ecosystems. Kudzu (Pueraria montana) is a fast-growing vine native to Asia that has invaded regions in the United States making management of this species an important issue. Estimated normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values for the years 2000 to 2015 were calculated using data collected by Landsat and MODIS platforms for three infestation sites in Kentucky. The STARFM image-fusing algorithm was used to combine Landsat- and MODIS-derived NDVI into time series with a 30 m spatial resolution and 16 day temporal resolution. The fused time series was …

Morphologic And Transcriptomic Response To Weed Pressure In Multiple Maize (Zea Mays L.) Selections And Teosinte (Zea Mays L. Ssp Parviglumis) Lines, Stephanie A. Bruggeman Jan 2016

Morphologic And Transcriptomic Response To Weed Pressure In Multiple Maize (Zea Mays L.) Selections And Teosinte (Zea Mays L. Ssp Parviglumis) Lines, Stephanie A. Bruggeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sweet corn (Zea mays L. convar. saccharata var. rugosa) and modern dent variants (field maize, Zea mays L. indentata) have varying degrees of weed tolerance (ability to maintain yield under weed stress). Maize retains ~30% of its ancestral teosinte’s (Zea mays ssp parviglumis) genetic base. Transcriptomic response to weed pressure in maize and teosinte can lead to manipulation of the maize genome to minimize crop yield loss due to weed presence. In maize and teosinte under weed-free and weedstressed conditions, the objectives of this study were: 1) to evaluate transcriptomic responses of 2 teosinte lines; 2) …

Corncob Grit Application As An Alternative To Control Weeds In Two Crop Production Systems, Mauricio Erazo-Barradas Jan 2016

Corncob Grit Application As An Alternative To Control Weeds In Two Crop Production Systems, Mauricio Erazo-Barradas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Weed management is one of the most challenging production problems in organic cropping systems because of limited weed control methods. Grits, derived from agricultural residues, have been demonstrated to control weed seedlings selectively in corn. This research examined weed efficacy and crop yield of an integrated air-propelled abrasive corncob grit (for in-row weed control) at varying timings and frequencies and flame-weeding or cultivation (for between-row weed control) system in two corn production systems. In the first study efficacy of weed control was assessed with this approach in an organic corn silage production system established in Morris, MN in 2013 and …

Evaluation Of Flame Weeding In Southeastern South Dakota, Benjamin William Arlt Jan 2016

Evaluation Of Flame Weeding In Southeastern South Dakota, Benjamin William Arlt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Weed management is the main yield-limiting factor in production of organic crops. Currently, organic producers have limited resources available for in-row weed management. Flame weeding has been recognized for its potential as one part of an integrated approach at weed management in organic systems. Flame weeding uses propane fueled torches to heat plant tissue and denature proteins, thus injuring or destroying the affected tissue. When properly timed, flame weeding can effectively be used for weed control in corn and soybean fields. Corn and soybean have both shown tolerances to flame weeding and minimal yield loss with well-managed and timed flame …
