Several invasion ecology hypotheses explain patterns of invasion, but these effects are often complex and multifaceted. Within the study of aquatic invasive species, small aquatic ecosystems are often neglected, despite them representing most global freshwater bodies. This study uses community composition and environmental and geographic factors to explain the occurrence of invasive species in small lakes in the southeastern United States. Specifically, this study predicted that several ecosystem factors would predict the probability of occurrence of invasive species of the lakes studied. Agricultural producers are invested in managing the impacts of crop damage on their yields and profit. When damage occurs early enough in an agricultural growing season, farmers have the option to replant their corn stand in an effort to recoup some of the lost profits. In this thesis two different types of naturally occurring damage, wildlife depredation and persistent weed or insect patches, were simulated on two representative regions of Mississippi. These data were then used to assess the financial viability of a range of damage mitigation methods, including partial replanting, enrollment into a government conservation buffer, and no action. …

Mississippi ranks among the leading states in sweetpotato production in the US. However, managing weeds in sweetpotato fields presents a significant challenge, and the limited availability of herbicides labeled for use in sweetpotato makes it even more challenging. The widespread and repeated use of herbicides has led to the development of weed resistance. In addition, herbicides are incompatible with the organic production system. Quinclorac controls crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) post-emergence in cool- and warm-season turfgrass. A rate response study revealed that two Mississippi smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum) species (MSU1 and MSU2) are resistant to quinclorac. Following that, field experiments were carried out to evaluate programmatic approaches to control one of these populations. Despite prior study on quinclorac-resistant weeds, to date, quinclorac-resistant smooth crabgrass and its mechanism of resistance have only been reported once in California. The mechanism of resistance of MSU1 and MSU2 relative to susceptible (SMT) was then investigated. The SMT biotype accumulated three times more cyanide than the resistant …

Weed control is an integral part of a successful overall production strategy in row- cropping systems and has the potential to reduce or eliminate yield losses that negatively affect profitability. Timely and correctly selected herbicide applications are the major keys for effective weed control in a majority of instances. However, there are negative factors that contribute to ineffectiveness and weed escape issues that currently lack viable options for management. Optimal plant populations are critical in achieving high rice yields. The purpose of this research was to investigate yield penalties associated with inadequate, non-uniform plant populations for modern rice cultivars. Research was conducted at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, MS, in 2019, 2020 and 2021. In one study, inbred, herbicide-resistant ‘CL153’ was drill-seeded at 73-18 kg ha-1 after being mixed with inbred, herbicide-susceptible ‘Rex’ at 0-55 kg ha-1. Likewise, hybrid, herbicide-resistant cultivar ‘CL XL7521’ was seeded at 29-8 kg ha-1 mixed with hybrid, herbicide-susceptible ‘XP753’ at 0-21 kg ha-1. At the …

To combat herbicide resistance among weeds, non-herbicide methods of control, such as cover crops, are becoming widely adapted. Experiments were conducted to determine how to effectively establish and manage cover crops in order to suppress tall waterhemp and Italian ryegrass and to assess their overall impact on soybean growth and yield. Various cover crop establishment methods were evaluated, and it was determined that interseeding at the R7 growth stage of soybean was the least effective method for proper cover crop establishment. Biomass data demonstrated that interseeding created the least amountof cover crop biomass, with no differences found among the other …

Planting date, seeding rate, soil texture, and row configuration are important factors in soybean production. Each of these factors can impact overall production and yield of soybean immensely. Drift is a point of contention with pesticide applications, causing the need to research application methods that provide consistent efficacy while minimizing off-target movement. Experiments were conducted to evaluate eight undiluted herbicides on invasive woody plants, Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera) and Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana), when applied individual plant treatment (IPT) via hack-and-squirt. Applications of undiluted aminocyclopyrachlor or imazapyr at 1 ml per 7.6 cm of tree diameter at breast height (DBH) made in the spring provided superior control over other herbicides or application timings. Herbicide resistance development among weed populations in cotton and peanut is becoming increasingly difficult to manage. If resistant populations continue to persist, weed control practices for producers will become less efficient and more costly. The objective of this research was to evaluate alternative weed control techniques designed to mitigate herbicide resistance development for their agronomic and economic impact on weed management systems. Water level declines in the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer (MRVAA) are attributed largely to withdrawals for rice (Oryza sativa L.) irrigation. This study was performed to determine if alternative irrigation strategies for rice could reduce withdrawal from the MRVAA without having an adverse effect on grain yield, grain quality, control of barnyardgrass, and profitability.
