Effects of mowing and grazing on a Leymus chinensis grassland in the Songnen plain of northeastern China were studied using eight replicates of four grazing and mowing treatments. Canopy cover and biomass of the dominant species (L. chinensis) were lower, and cover of the halophyte Suaeda corniculata higher, on grazed than ungrazed; ungrazed plots showed a response to mowing, but not grazing; species diversity increased with grazing and mowing. This study found dissimilar effects of grazing and mowing on plant populations, canopy biomass and structure in L. chinensis grassland. Productivity of pasture consisting of both unimproved and improved areas was investigated in terms of conversion efficiency of solar energy into products and nutrient intake of animal. It was shown that animal production is mainly supported by the improved area in spring and late-autumn while the production is supported together by both areas in summer by reasons of increases in productivity of the unimproved area and productive depression in the improved area. Historical evidence indicates that substantial changes have occurred in the botanical composition of native pastures in temperate southeast Australia as a result of grazing by sheep and cattle. However, the resulting pastures now appear to be relatively stable and there has been limited success in changing composition experimentally. This paper reports the results of experiments conducted at four locations in south-east Australia designed to increase the proportion of desirable species in native pastures by grazing management.

Experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the impact of mechanical perturbations, phosphorous fertilization and grazing on the native grasslands. Six treatments were tested: three without grazing and three subjected to grazing. Both situations were plowed, plowed plus fertilization or kept untreated. During the study botanical composition, vegetative cover, species diversity and above ground biomass were measured. Plowed and plowed plus fertilization treatments drastically reduce all of these parameters related to community structure and forage production. The Argentine Flooding Pampa is a large humid rangeland, severely deteriorated by cattle grazing, to the point of causing the local extinction of many native grasses and important alterations in ecosystem function. Among grassland communities exist those that vegetate halomorphic soils, highly degraded due continuous grazing by domestic herbivores causing soil denudation and increased aridity. A three-year study was conducted to quantify the effects of travel distance to water on pasture utilization rate and soil nutrient gradients. A 64 ha unit was divided into 16 4 ha pastures having maximum travel distances ranging from 250 to 450 m. Temporal utilization rate (UR) and soil nutrient levels were determined at 30 m intervals beginning at the water source. Temporal UR significantly declined beyond 250 m in all pastures having travel distances exceeding 250 m while pastures with less than 250 m travel distance were uniformly grazed. The objective of this two-year experiment was to determine the ability of forages grown as winter cover crops to reduce nitrate leaching losses after temporary leguminous pastures were ploughed. In both years, cover crops reduced cumulative leaching losses compared with bare fallow and were most effective when sown early in the autumn. When large amounts of residues with relatively low N concentrations were incorporated in the soil in the spring, there was extensive net N immobilisation that suppressed the yield of the following wheat test crop. While intensive grazing has the potential to increase dairy farm profitability in the Northeast United States, the uneven recycling of N through feces and urine can increase NO3 - leaching. We measured NO3 - leaching loss from urine and feces beneath N-fertilized orchardgrass using 60 cm diameter by 90 cm deep drainage lysimeters. Mean NO3-N levels in leachate beneath these areas were 3.8, 6.5, 93.5, 110 and 139 mg l-1 for the control, feces, and spring, summer and fall applied urine. Most of the pastures in the central highlands of Turkey have been replaced by cereal production over the last 50 years. Also, the mismanagement of the existing pastures, i.e., early grazing and over stocking of animals, has resulted in severe degradation of pasture species. A study, involving a multidisciplinary approach, was initiated and included botanical and socio-economic surveys, improvement of village-based feed resources, and realistic livestock feeding schemes to put limited feed resources to best use. Results of socioeconomic survey studies in selected villages are presented as prerequisite information for initiation of a forage, livestock and range rehabilitation project.

Seed mixture of sixteen native legumes were fed to sheep as a single meal and their passage through the animals was monitored in the faeces. The same mixture was used in a field experiment to improve degraded pasture. Over two hundred sheep were allowed to graze the improved pasture and rest on a nearby un-improved (target) pasture during four days. Results showed that legumes with smaller seeds were able to pass through the animals undamaged compared with large seeded species. The goal of this study was to determine the structure, productivity and utilization of mountain communal pastures of the Gorbea area in 1994. The area was classified in four zones according to topographic position and improvement activities: north slope brush removed, summit, south slope 50% brush, and south slope brush removed. Ecological profiles were used to relate the most abundant species to soil P and K contents at the different zones. On four occasions, the mineral composition of white clover (Trifolium repens L.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and paspalum (Paspalum dilatatum Poir.), and their morphological components, were monitored as they regrew after defoliation. The four periods coincided with spring, summer, summer/autumn and autumn. White clover generally had more phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium than did the grasses. Ryegrass, on the other hand, had higher concentrations of sodium than either white clover or paspalum. Herbage quality was examined in paddocks continuously grazed by dairy cows fed supplements with low and high N. There were two sward types for each level of supplement, i.e. fertilized perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) and unfertilized perennial ryegrass/white clover (Trifolium repens L) with a mean clover content of 49 % of dry matter. Decreasing N-intake from 307 to 140 g N cow -1 d -1 by feeding low-N supplements had a small influence on herbage quality in spite of the reduced N-output via urine and faeces. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of increasing levels of ruminally undegradable protein (ECP) on the performance of bull calves grazing Coastcross-1 Bermudagrass during the dry season. One hundred and twelve Zebu-Brown Swiss bull calves weighing an average of 265 kg, were randomly assigned to four treatment groups in a completely random design. Calves received a self-feeding supplement (1 kg) with 40% crude protein (CP) and 31, 38, 44, or 52% ECP. During a 96-day preliminary phase without supplementation, weight gains of the four treatment groups ranged from 0.357 to 0.394 kg/day. A linear (P<0.0 I) response of calf weight gain was observed with an increase in ECP of the supplement (0.668, 0.672, 0.823 and 0.893 kg/day, respectively). Plasma urea concentration was reduced (P<0.05) from 17.8 to 9.85 mg/di with the highest level ofECP, which may reflect a reduced supply of NH -N for ruminal bacteria.

The objective was to determine the effect of protein degradability and supplement level on forage degradation. Steers fistulated were utilizated in brachiaria (Brachiaria brizantha) pasture. A randomized block design was used with a control treatment and supplements according to a factorial scheme combining low, medium and high protein degradability with supplementation levels: low, medium and high analysed as principal treatments and incubation time as splitplot by SAS. Agronomic studies on Lathyrus sativus and L. cicera, promising forage and/or grain legumes, are presented. Time of seeding, seeding rate and grain recovery following grazing were investigated in preparation for the release of the first Australian commercial cultivars of Lathyrus. Clear optimal seeding rate, time of seeding, and guidelines for grazing have been identified. A seeding rate of 45-60 kg/ha and an early sowing time (June 6 in this experiment) were identified for maximum grain yield. Grain yield following grazing can be equal to ungrazed crops although sufficient time between grazing and flowering is required to ensure adequate grain yields. …

The range of life forms of four grassland communities in the Cantabrian mountains (N. Spain) was studied under grazing and when grazing was excluded in relation to soil characteristics. Hemicryptophytes were the most abundant life form in all communities and they increased their number when ungrazed. Diversity was bigger in the communities with shrubs, which presented a more heterogeneous structure. As a whole, grasslands on calcareous soils were more diverse than those on siliceous soils.

The mineral contents (Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn) of white clover grass without nitrogen and grass-only pastures with annual nitrogen rates of 0, 120 and 250 kg ha-1 were studied in 1994 and 1995. The pastures were grazed twice per season by growing lambs. The white clover contents averaged 25% and 42%, respectively. The Ca and Mg contents and the Ca/P ratio were higher, and the K/(Ca+Mg) equivalent ratio lower in white clover grass than in grass-only swards. The aim of this study was to compare the milk production of cows grazing endophyte-infected perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) pasture with those grazing endophyte-free pastures. High and nil endophyte ryegrass pastures were drilled with and without white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in autumn 1993. White clover was completely removed in autumn 1995. High endophyte pastures had >85% of tillers infected but nil endophyte pastures were rapidly contaminated with endophyte-infected ryegrass and had 50% infection by autumn 1996. Losses in milk production due to endophyte were small (<6%), and occurred in only 2 of the 6 three week test periods. Cows showed clinical symptoms of ryegrass staggers in summer/autumn 1995 but not in 1996. Heat stress symptoms were absent. Losses of milk production occurred when lolitrem B levels were low (spring 1994) and when cows did not show clinical staggers (summer 1996). Other chemicals or agronomic factors could be important determinants of the milk production responses.

Botanical diversity in species rich grasslands re-created on restored opencast coal sites may be threatened by aggressive growth from the legume component. A previous study indicated that this aggressive legume growth may be suppressed by spring grazing with sheep. We predicted and tested the effects of scale of heterogeneity on movements and selectivity of a large grazer in a controlled field experiment. We created random mosaics of short/high quality and tall/low quality grass patches in equal proportion at grid sizes of 2x2 m and 5x5 m. Subsequently, we monitored the foraging behavior of four steers in 16 20x40 m plots over 30-minute periods. As predicted, the animals selected the short patches both by walking in a nonrandom manner and by concentrating their grazing time. Pastures are often either under- or over-grazed, which can affect both pasture sustainability and livestock performance. Disk meter heights were measured for rye (Secale cereale L.) -ryegrass (Lolium L. multiflorum Lam.) pasture to characterize stocking rate (2.5, 3.7, and 4.9 steers/ha) effects on grazing patterns. In another study, grazing indices were calculated for bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] to describe pasture utilization over time for three stocking rates (3.0, 5.9, 8.9 steers/ha). An experiment was conducted to determine the dry matter, energy, crude protein and fibre intake by dairy cows in late lactation when grazing perennial pasture offered at allocations of 15, 20, 30 and 40 kg DM/cow.day. The cows consistently selected a diet 10% higher in digestibility than that on offer. In contrast, cows selected diets with crude protein levels increasing from 22% to 40%, above that in pasture on offer, as pasture allocation increased. In tropical climates, adequate shade may be essential to ensure the survival and productivity of grazing animals, but in the temperate Ontario climate, the necessity or benefits of providing shade for grazing cattle are less clear, and have proved controversial. Meteorological data indicate that beef cattle in Ontario may be at risk of suffering from heat stress on more than 25% of days during July and August, and may decrease feed intake and benefit from the provision of shade for more than 50% of days during the two hottest summer months.
