Extensification of grassland management in Germany has 2 major objectives (I) to reduce the surplus of crop and animal products, and (2) to diminish unwanted side effects against the environment from intensive production systems. Some of the programmes on offer require a reduced number of cuttings and grazings per season, including a very late first cut of the sward and a reduction of nitrogen fertiliser. The experiment was conducted to determine effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilisers on forage yield and quality of dwarf napiergrass (Pennisteum purpuretum). Four levels of N (460, 690, 920 and 1150 kg/ha), and 4 levels of K2O (150, 300, 450 and 600 kg/ha), and 1 level of P2O5 (144 kg/ha), were applied. Forage yield, leaf area per tiller, leaf elongation rate and forage quality of dwarf napiergrass were increased when N level applied was increased. All grassland farmers should try to optimise their grassland output during the growing season. Grassland farmers would improve their production results if they paid more attention to plant defoliation processes. Careful management of the grass ley will increase outputs by more than one third, without needing further inputs. Most grassland farmers need to have this improvement with no additional cost, especially in the present world economy.

The low voluntary intake of many roughages is commonly explained by a limited physical capacity of ruminants to process fibrous feeds. Recently, we developed a new theory of feed intake regulation assuming feed consumption to create both benefits for the animal (represented by the intake of net energy for maintenance and gain) and costs (represented by the total oxygen consumption of the feeding animal). For nonreproducing ruminants we have shown that voluntary intake of roughages is close to the optimum feed intake level, i.e., the level at which for the animal the ratio between benefits and costs becomes maximum. Daily gains of cattle grazing Mott elephantgrass (MB; Pennisteum purpureIum Schum.) arc approximately twice those obtained on other warm-season perennial grasses grown in Florida, USA, but plant characteristics responsible for the high forage quality of MB have not been identified. Bana, a South African hybrid between Pennisetum purpureum and Penmisetumn glantcum, was evaluated in a fertiliser trial at the University of Pretoria. The initial pH(H20) of the soil was 4.2, the P status 12 my/ kg and the K status 50 mg/kg, A third of the.plots were treated with Ca(OH)2, to raise the pH(H20) to 5.6, while on another third, the pH was raised to 6.5. Experiments were conducted with barley (Hordeum vulgare) and millet (Pennisetum americanum), collected at vegetative, boot, heading and mature growth stages, and berseem clover (Trifollum alexandrium) collected al vegetative, bud and late bloom stages, In the grasses, stems and leaf sheaths were higher (P<0.05) in cell wall constituents, xylose, p-coumaric acid, and ferulic acid and lower (P<0.05) In in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) than leaf blades. In the legume, stems were higher (P<0,05) in cell wall constituents and xylose than petioles and leaflets, Al advanced maturity, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed increased lignification and decreased tissue digestion for leaf sheaths and stems of grasses, compared with leaf blades. In berseem,petioles were higher in IVDMD than leaflets and stems.

Two studies were conducted to determine whether protein or energy is first limiting for milk production when cows are fed diets containing large amounts of high quality forage. In the first study, infusion of 1.2 kg/day of soy-protein into the abomasum of cows consuming a diet of all lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) silage increased milk and milk protein production by 13 and 1996. Abomasal infusion of l.0 kg glucose was without effect. Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.), a robust perennial bunchgrass with high yield potential, rapidly loses quality and palatability without proper management as it matures. In 1985 and 1986, 2 dwarf napiergrass cultivars (Mott and Tift Nl29) and 2 tall cultivars (Merkeron and Tift N68) were evaluated for yield, quality and agronomic characteristics. Dwarf cultivars yielded about 1/3 as much as tall cultivars. Percentage leaf was 60-76 for dwarf cultivors and 43-46 for tall cultivars. The nutritional value of perennial warm-season grasses is limited primarily by digestible energy concentration. The relatively low digestibility of these grasses is due to their high concentration of fibre and its resistance to degradation in the rumen. Nine white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars, among them 2 bred in Rio Grande do Sul, were evaluated in association with annuai ryegrass and pensacola bahiagrass. In a plot experiment, during 4 years, 17 harvests were cut to determine lhe dry matter (DM) yield of the mixture components. The annual ryegrass produced in· the first year 1634 kg/ha OM and in the second year, by natural reseeding, only 120 kg/ha. The pensacola bahiagrass increased DM yield from 954 kg/ha in the second year to 4588 kg/ha in the fourth year without any nitrogen (N) fertilisation. The while clover …

A hay marketing association was formed in Kentucky in 1989 as a means of increasing farm income and ·10 hedge against the uncertain future of tobacco production. The Kentucky Pride Hay Grower's Association (KPHGA) was designed to work in concert· with a hay testing and inspection service operated by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA). This testing service used near• infrared reflectance (NIR) technology as well as a visual appraisal by trained hay inspectors. Nutritive quality of many grass species used for forage in the Northern Great Plains of Canada and the United States is not well documented, especially at different maturity stages. This study compared agronomic and forage quality characteristics of eleven grasses common to Saskatchewan. Botanical separation and quality analysis was undertaken at three growth stages. Meadow Brome (Bromus riparius), Russian Wildrye (Psathyrostachys juceus) and Altai Wildrye (Elymus angustus) were shown to have high leaf to stem ratios which corresponded with high protein levels. Livestock producers participated in a demonstration project to extend the grazing season and evaluate dormant forage quality and yield. Differences were not detected in yields among forage species but yield differences existed among sites. Yield estimates did not change over time across all forage species but some sites were only able to participate for two months. Producers utilizing fescue beyond November had reductions in herbage mass. Crude protein, available crude protein, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber content differed among forage species and sites. Limpograss (Hemarthria altissima [Poir.] Stapf et C.E. Hubb.) in vitro digestion is greater than most perennial grasses adapted to Florida. Weight gain of cattle grazing limpograss has been lower than expected due in part to low herbage N concentration. Experiments were conducted on limpograss pastures to assess N fertilization, overseeding of the legume aeschynomene (Aeschynomene americana L), and feeding of N supplements to cattle as means of overcoming this limitation. Greater N fertilization, overseeding aeschynomene, and supplementation (corn-urea mixtures) increased weight gain 0.30, 0.23, and 0.24-0.35 kg d-1, respectively, over control treatments. Intensive utilization of autumn regrowth for forage production was compared to other autumn treatments in nine seed production fields of meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) during 1993-96. Uncut plots without a N application in autumn always had the lowest number of reproductive tillers and the lowest subsequent year seed yields. Intensive utilization of regrowth, by application of 80 kg N ha-1 immediately after seed harvest and forage harvests in September or October, did not have any negative impact on the following yearsí seed yields. Delaying forage harvest from 10 September to 10 October increased forage yields, but lowered the …

Improving the quality of harvested forage is seen as an important step in improving the productivity of Manitoba’s beef, dairy and cash hay operations. One of the most important determinants of forage quality is stage of maturity when harvested. Timely cutting is particularly important during first cut because it represents a major portion of the total harvest, and forage quality drops rapidly during this period.

Alfalfa, sainfoin and cicer milkvetch provided relatively little increase in forage production, however, they improved forage palatability and quality, increasing total forage consumption. Over years 3 through 5 of the stand, lamb production per hectare was more than doubled with alfalfa and sainfoin, compared with Russian wildrye (RWR) alone. Cicer milkvetch was relatively slow to establish and did not contribute significantly to mixture quality until Year 5. Alfalfa was more competitive to RWR than sainfoin.

This study compares yield, species composition, and forage quality of binary mixtures of two birdsfoot trefoil cultivars (‘Witt’ and ‘Dawn’) and six cool-season forage grasses. Stands were established by no-till seeding into glyphosate killed pasture sod in May and in August. Heavy autumn dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) competition reduced trefoil survival in August seedings. The proportion of trefoil in the herbage varied widely but in spring-seeded seeding year stands it was always highest with Kentucky bluegrass (maximum of 740 g kg-1, first harvest, 1994) and usually lowest (107 g kg-1 or less) with perennial ryegrass, reed canarygrass, or orchardgrass. …

The experiment took place in Guarapuava-Brazil, from May 1994 to January, 1996 to evaluate the improvement of a subtropical native grassland by the introduction of species and phosphate fertilization. It was observed that for the higher dose applied there occurred an increase over the production of dry matter and crude protein production and absorption of P and K in the plant. The objective of this study was to characterize a triticale crop during winter months, in relation to liveweight gain and animal production, under different grazing systems on sandy acidic soils. Three treatments were imposed to weaned calves of 110 kg liveweight average. Our goal was to identify factors influencing potassium content of grasses, so that a grass management strategy for controlling potassium content could be formulated. The objective of this study was to compare the composition and degradation characteristics of early bloom alfalfa and fenugreek harvested after 9, 15 and 17 wk of growth. Crude protein (CP) content of fenugreek cut at 9, 15 and 17 wk was lower (P<0.05) than that of alfalfa. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and lignin content of fenugreek harvested after 15 and 17 wk were higher (P<0.05) than that of alfalfa. Ash content was lower (P<0.05) in fenugreek than for alfalfa. In vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD) of fenugreek cut at 15 and 17 wk was similar to that of alfalfa. Total in vitro gas production of fenugreek cut at the three stages of growth was not significantly different from those observed for alfalfa. A collection of 137 accessions of tropical and subtropical grasses of Pennisetum purpureum (53), Panicum maximum (10), Brachiaria spp. (9), Hemarthria altissima (19), Setaria spp. (11), Digitaria spp. (22), Cynodon spp.(7) and Paspalum spp. (6) was evaluated for frost tolerance (FT), dry matter yield per cut (DMYC), number of cuts (NC) and accumulated dry matter yield per year (ADMY). Crude protein content (CPC), leaf/stem ratio (L/S), pubescence (P) and animal preference under grazing (AP) were also recorded in 20 entries of in P. purpureum. This study was undertaken to determine the forage potential of Texas bluegrass (Poa arachnifera Torr). Texas bluegrass is a perennial coolseason grass native to Kansas, Oklahoma, western Arkansas, and the central region of Texas, USA (Gould, 1975). Thirteen different accessions were established in 1988 at the Texas A&M University Centers at Dallas and Stephenville and tested for 2 years. Mean yields at Stephenville and Dallas were 3610 and 6022 kg ha-1. Two synthetic varieties (Syn-1 and Syn-2) were tested from 1990 to 1995 at four locations in Texas. Megathyrsus maximus is a forage species used over 30 million hectares in Brazil and in the surrounding countries for intensification of the cattle production systems. Due to the large area and distinct biomes in which it is used, there is a need to continuously develop more productive and adapted cultivars to each biome and use. Three apomictic accessions were crossed with five sexual plants at Embrapa Beef Cattle in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil in 2014. More than 1100 hybrids were planted in a spaced-plant field and evaluated visually for regrowth after cuts and for disease and pest damage. In 2016, …
