The Japanese Red Data Book of Birds lists the Japanese Marsh Warbler (Locustella pryeri pryeri) as an endangered species. It feeds and breeds in-reed dominated (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin.ex.Steud.) grassland in N Japan. Expanses of reclaimed land (Hotokenuma) are its largest breeding grounds. Each April, fire management is used to rid the area of the dead reed material amassed from the previous year. Circa 1 month after burning, the species returns to the area to inhabit and breed in the unburned areas. Fire use to manage grasslands is an important tool for the conservation and management of …

Manipulating grazing pressure, controlling tree competition and burning are the main options for cattle farmers to manage land in subtropical Australian Eucalypt woodlands. These can contain >175 herbaceous and 60 woody species, but only 5 are desirable perennial and productive grass (Silcock et al., 1996). Here we describe the responses of some perennial grasses to cattle grazing pressure, tree competition and spring burning.

Changes in soil bulk density and soil nutrient profiles are a major concern of dryland grain producers considering grazing sheep on cereal stubble fields. Our objective was to compare burned, grazed, tilled, trampled and clipped wheat stubble fields on changes in soil bulk density and soil nutrient profiles. Treatments were evaluated in a series of three experiments using a randomized complete block design and four replications at each site. Contrast statements were used to make pre-planned comparisons among treatments. Wheat stem sawfly (WSS), Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae) is the most damaging insect pest to Montana’s $1 billion dollar per year grain industry. Current WSS control methods are either expensive, reduce wheat yields, or are not effective. Our objective was to compare burning, grazing, tilling, trampling and clipping wheat stubble fields on over-wintering WSS larval populations.
