Colocynth is one of the major medicinal plants that naturally grows in deserts of Middle East and North Africa. Extending cultivation of this species is useful for sand dune fixation and for making incomes for the needy inhabitants. Despite of numerous studies on seed germination, there are still debates on best method of seed dormancy breaking for colocynth. Moreover, seed morphology, phonological stages, and habitat conditions of this species are not fully studied. Effect Of Winter Grazing Management Of Stockpiled Native Pastures Of Basaltic Soils Of Uruguay On Daily Gains Of Heifers, G. Pigurina, R. Castells, G. Reyes, E. J. Berretta

The effect of three grazing systems of fall stockpiled native pastures on the winter gains of 66 Hereford heifers (135 kg) was studied. Treatments were: continuos grazing (CG); (C7) the plot was divided in 12 and each was grazed for 7 days and (C28), the plot was divided in 3 and each were grazed for 28 days. Heifers were weighed every 14 days and grazing behaviour was recorded. Stockpiled HM was greater (P< 0.05) in C7 and C28 than in CG (988, 912, and 604 kg DM/ha, respectively). Herbage allowance (HA) was greater (P< 0.01) in CG followed by C28 and C7 (11.7, 6.6 and 5.9 kg DM/100 kg LW, respectively). Post-grazing HM was greater (P0.05) in all pastures (CP 10.2%, NDF 71.2%, ADF 41.3% and ash 14.4%). Final LW of heifers were similar (P> 0.05) (167, 162 and 160 kg for CG, C7 and C28, respectively). Influence Of Stocking Rate And Grazing System On Lamb Performance Of Mixed Oat And Ryegrass Swards In Uruguay, Fabio Montossi, R. San Julián, C. Arocena, A. Dighiero

An experiment was conducted at INIA-Tacuarembó Research Station (Uruguay) during 15 June to 4 October 1998, using a Avena Sativa (oat) and Lolium multiflorum (ryegrass) sward to examine the effect of stocking rate (SR; 25 and 35 lambs/ha) and grazing system (GS; strip and 7 days rotational grazing) on sward and lamb performance. SR had a significant effect on lamb performance, being higher the liveweight gain (LWG; 120 vs 98 g/a/d, P < 0.01), hot carcass weight (HCW; 17.7 vs 16.1 kg/a, P < 0.05) and carcass fat cover (GR; 12 vs 8 mm, P < 0.01) of those lambs managed at the lower SR. At the high SR, lambs increased grazing time (405 vs 376 min., P < 0.05). SG did not affect lamb performance, but strip GS reduces lamb grazing time (367 vs 414 min., P < 0.01) and biting rates (22 vs 24 bites/lamb/min., P < 0.01). Post grazing sward height (SH) was highly associated with LWG (LW = - 101,7 + 32.7 SH – 1.49 SH2, R2 = 0.66). An experiment was carried out from 3 of July to 22 of October 1998, using a Lolium multiflorum Lom. (ryegrass) and Triticosecale Wittmack (triticale) sward grazed by lambs, to examine the effect of stocking rate (SR; 25 and 35 lambs/ha), grazing system (GS; strip and 7 days rotational grazing) and supplementation (S; with or without) on sward structure, production, composition and nutritive value. SR affected significantly pre and post grazing herbage mass and sward height, being higher at the lower SR (3211 vs 2832 kg DM ha-1, P < 0.01; 2443 vs 1939 kg DM ha-1, P < 0.01; 19 vs 17 cm, P < 0.01 and 10 vs 8 cm, P < 0.01 respectively), increasing, at the high SR, the proportions of the ryegrass green leaf component, particularly in the uppermost layers of the sward canopy. Two improved native pastures were established by phosphoric (P) fertilisation and oversowing of: white clover (Trifolium repens) mixed with birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) (TbL) and annual lotus (Lotus subbiflorus) (Rin). Such pastures were evaluated during 5 years with steers at two stocking rates (High and Low) and two grazing managements (Rotational and Alternate). Presence of legumes was high and botanical changes were favourable in both pastures that evidenced good persistence. Daily liveweight gains of steers and total animal production were high in both pastures, but significantly (P≤ 0.05) higher in TbL. No significant differences …

Integrated Orderly Classification System of Grassland (IOCSG) was initiated by Professor Ji-Zhou Ren in the 1960s and it has satisfactorily served to direct theory and practice of grassland classification for the last several decades in China. In this study IOCSG is adopted to classify the grasslands in Yobe state Nigeria, using 30 years (1984-2013) data on precipitation and temperature from 12 satellite stations across the state. Humidity (moisture index) was estimated as the ratio of precipitation per annum to annual temperature. An analysis of forbs from 9 years of Plant Census protocol (NRI 2019) is compared to data from the Line Point Intercept (LPI) protocol. Both protocols were conducted on the same geospatially separate macroplots (N=1230). The macroplots locations were stratified by NRI based on a land hierarchy which has had long-term use in the United States (Salley etal 2015). This ties vegetation and land together in the data. The analysis showed that the 15-minute plant census method increased forb species data by 29 percent over the LPI method which takes 40-60 minutes. Grasslands are known to host crop pests and may act as the reservoir of pests affecting maize production. This research aimed at determining the effect of grassland composition on abundance of stemborers on grasses sorrouding maize farms in western Kenya. The experimental set up followed a complete random block design (CRBD); with four elevations at Lambwe, Homabay, Luanda and Mt. Elgon assigned as blocks based on different altitudes. This study used global positioning systems (GPS) to understand grazing distribution of three cattle in the communal rangeland of Eastern Cape, South Africa. Free ranging cattle were randomly selected from participating households and were fitted with neck GPS collars, which recorded geographic position every five-minute interval during wet and dry season. Decomposition is a major determinant of terrestrial nutrient cycling and therefore an important regulator of ecosystem structure and function. Grasses are the crucial component of the rural rangeland ecology. Besides the morphological studies, micro-morphological characters such as stem anatomy were also investigated in this study. Dry savannahs are water-limited and under increasing anthropogenic pressure. Sudden regime shifts or tipping points pose a major threat to various ecosystems and people's livelihoods worldwide. However, tipping points are still hard to predict and often occur without warning. To avoid dramatic social-ecological consequences, it is crucial to understand tipping point behaviour and to identify early warning indicators. Previous studies have hardly implemented an integrated social-ecological approach, which has led to a fragmented understanding and oversimplification of tipping point phenomena. Rangelands and pasturelands are often assessed using different methodologies. The Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health and Pasture Condition Scoring methodologies, two techniques used widely across the USA, were developed for rangelands and pasturelands respectively. These two grazingland assessment techniques were determined to be complementary and if integrated could provide an optimized approach to measure grazinglands without regards to specific use (i.e. range or pasture). We present an improved grazingland assessment protocol that merges indicators and attributes from Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health and Pasture Condition Scoring methodologies. The space for action that might move agricultural systems toward sustainability is narrowing. In so far as increasing dis-order in agroecosystems and food systems is caused by human agency, then remedial action must take account of cognition. This article argues that an understanding of cognitive processes is essential, as the foundation for participatory R, D & E that builds platforms of cooperation, binding actors into communities of learning that are trasnforming both science and practice.

Stakeholders in grassland farming, including farmers, rural communities, urban consumers, politicians, educators, and service agencies, widely agree that the goal for grassland farming is the triple bottom line: farming systems that are ecologically sustainable, profitable and socially acceptable. This paper considers how extension and training might contribute to that worthy goal by encouraging practitioners to better manage their management environment. The notion of a management environment refers to a holistic consideration of those factors that impact on farmers, farm advisors or educators, that subset of grassland farming ‘practitioners’ within the wider range of stakeholders.

Selecting forage crops adapted to the climatic and edaphic conditions of specific locations is essential for economic sustainability and environmental protection. Yet, currently, proper selection is difficult due to the absence of advanced selection tools. Significant improvements are being made in the process through Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping. Climate and soil GIS layers are being matched with forage characteristics through rules describing species tolerances. Better matching will reduce economic risks and environmental hazards associated with sub-optimal crop selection and subsequent performance. Two farm demonstrations were designed to show effects of periodic grazing of riparian areas. Sites were monitored for vegetative cover, degree of treading or hoof prints and dung deposition within three m of stream edge following grazing by beef cattle. A fenced enclosure was established along a 350 m stream reach on Farm-1, and eleven permanent stations were monitored following six graze periods over 12-months. Farm-2 involved grazing of two 0.13 ha paddocks, each of which contained a 22 m stream reach. We are entering an era of landscape design in order to simultaneously tackle largescale issues such as salinity and rising water tables, whole-farm profitability and the maintenance or enhancement of rural communities. In Australia, an important element of landscape design will be the reintroduction or broadening of the base of perennial grasses within farm systems. Two indirect methods for estimating herbage mass in situ were investigated in a research programme. Electric capacitance and spectral reflectance measurements were made and estimated values were compared with cut herbage mass results. Vegetation indexes (VI) measured by spectroradiometer showed a high correlation with fresh herbage mass, but there was no correlation observed between VI and dry matter results. Equations installed in electric capacitance meter were not feasible for Hungarian conditions. The change of electric capacitance in the sward (CMR) gave no correlation with cut DM yields. The investigated indirect methods are not suitable for research or production use yet.

Municipal biosolids (sewage sludge) are the by-products of wastewater treatment plants and their production, worldwide, has steadily increased over the past years. Florida is one of the fastest growing states in the USA. Biosolids are readily and increasingly available throughout the state. Pasture fertilization has been shown to increase biomass and quality of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) dramatically in Florida sandy soils. Nevertheless, with low cattle prices, ranchers are forced to reduce fertilizers inputs. Biosolids contain considerable amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), sulphur (S), calcium (Ca), and micronutrients, and are inexpensive when compared with commercial fertilizers. …

Vegetation maps have been made since centuries. The vegetation cover was represented as homogeneous mapping units (polygons), representing different vegetation types, where each type consists a combination of different plant species (floristic composition). More recent, with the use of satellite imagery, the polygons have been replaced by pixels with similar content as the polygon maps. In both approaches, field-observations were linked to the mapping units (polygons or pixels) often resulting in a complex of different vegetation types per mapping unit. The GrassGro Decision Support tool (DS tool) (Donnelly and Moore, 1999) was released for commercial use in Australia with a training package in late 1997. An assessment of its adoption was made by a survey of 53 registered users in March 1999. An evaluation of the software and training package was made at training workshops by 92 users between 1997 and December 1999. The response rates to the survey and the evaluation were 62% and 82% respectively. Optimising the harvesting time of grass in primary growth is difficult under Finnish climatic conditions, because the digestibility of grass decreases on average by 0.5 percentage units daily. We constructed a model based on cumulative temperature and geographical location which estimates the digestibility of grass. This model is used to produce estimates utilising real time weather information. The estimates are presented as a map, which is revised daily. Farmers have free access to the maps via Internet.
