Bacterial blight is the most important disease of walnuts in Western Australia.
In bad seasons it can cause heavy losses in susceptible varieties such as Wilson's Wonder, and in some seedling trees.
Carefully timed sprays greatly reduce the incidence of bacterial blight, and it is also recommended that less susceptible varieties—such as Franquette— should be used for new plantings.

TESTS with the cucumber variety Ohio MR 200 which was introduced from the U.S.A. (1), have shown it to be almost unaffected by the cucumber mosaic virus. It is a good type and satisfactory yielder and promises to be the answer to the cucumber mosaic problem in Western Australia.

This list constitutes a revision of portion of the census published by Came (1925) and supplemented by the same author in 1927.
It also contains records of diseases identified in the period between these earlier publications and December 31, 1959.
The list is divided into two sections, the first dealing with pasture legumes and the second with cereals and grasses.
The sections are arranged alphabetically according to the botanical names of the host plants. In general, the viral, bacterial, fungal and nematodal diseases and physiological disorders are listed in that order.

BLACK SPOT DISEASE IS THE MOST SERIOUS FOLIAGE BLIGHT OF TOMATOES IN THIS STATE. IN SEASONS FAVOURABLE TO ITS DEVELOPMENT SEVERE DEFOLIATION AND FRUIT ROTTING ARE EXPERIENCED.
IN Western Australia, black spot, which is also known as early blight and target spot, is a troublesome disease of long standing. It is caused by the fungus Alternaria solani which also attacks potatoes.

DURING a week spent in Holland, visits were made to the International Agricultural Centre, Wageningen, the Fruit Research Station, Wilhelminadorp, the Virus Indexing Station, Emmeloord, the Glass House Research Station, Naaldwyk, and the fruit and flower auctions at Naaldwyk and Aalsmeer.
Visits to commercial orchards were limited by time.

BROWN SPOT caused by the fungus Alternaria passiflorae, is found in plantings throughout Western Australia. Severe outbreaks of the disease have occurred in most districts, including Serpentine, Manjimup, Nannup and Denmark. Although isolated young plantings may remain healthy for two or three years the disease eventually becomes established in the vines.

POWDERY mildew or oidium, is a disease which is always present to a greater or lesser extent in grapevines in Western Australia.
In seasons favourable for its development it stunts the growth of shoots and leaves and may seriously reduce fruit yields and quality.
Most of our commonly-grown varieties are quite susceptible to the disease, but for the reason that currants are the most extensively grown variety, the overall losses are greatest in this variety.

DOWNY mildew of onions, caused by the fungus Peronospora destructor, is widespread in Western Australia.
In market gardens adjacent to Perth where the majority of onions are grown the disease occurs each year in spring and early summer crops and often attains epidemic proportions.

COMMERCIAL pear growing was seen only in Washington State where production is in the vicinity of five million bushels or about 12 per cent, of the total fruit production of the State.
Two-thirds of the pears are Bartletts which are used extensively for canning. The other main variety is D'Anjou with lesser quantities of Bosc and Winter Nelis all of which are used for the fresh fruit trade.
In the last six years a serious depletion in tree numbers has occurred due to the inroads of Pear Decline a new disease the cause of which at present is unknown.

GERANIUMS are affected by relatively few troublesome diseases. However, in Western Australia, leaf rust of these plants is very common and can become a serious problem, particularly in the more susceptible varieties growing in sheltered positions.

DURING the summer months, leaves of many plants develop browning and scorching which progresses inwards from the leaf margin or downwards from the leaf tip.
The affected parts become dry and brittle and may break away from the remaining green areas.
Ornamental trees, shrubs and other plants, certain orchard trees and in fact a large number of species may be affected.
Two plants which are very susceptible to this type of injury and are rarely seen without it are the Ioquat tree and the butterfly tree (Bauhinia).

A SUCCESSFUL tobacco crop depends initially on an ample supply of well-grown, disease-free seedlings available early in the planting season.
If planting is held up due to a poor supply of seedlings, the resulting crop will not be grown in the most favourable part of the season. Late-grown crops nearly always give low returns.

FREEDOM from serious pests and diseases such as Black Spot and Codling Moth and relative immunity from storage rots has greatly simplified apple growing in Western Australia.
However, what has been gained in this respect is often countered by pre-harvest and post-harvest physiological troubles which are rather common to apple growing in this State.

EACH season, Bacterial Wilt causes heavy losses to individual growers in several of the potato districts throughout the South-West of the State.
The disease is incited by the bacterium Pseudomonas solanacearum E.F.Sm. and is most prevalent in the districts of Donnvbrook. Pemberton and Manjimup as well as in the area between Waroona and Dardanup.
It is a tuber-borne disease which is extremely difficult to eradicate, once it has been introduced on to a property.

THE following report deals with the many aspects of fruit growing both technical and commercial covered during a tour of three overseas countries undertaken on behalf of the Department of Agriculture and the fruitgrowers of Western Australia.
In the course of the three and a half months spent on this work, 13 research establishments were visited and contacts were made with research personnel both within these organisations and elsewhere.
Visits to commercial fruit growing areas were made with extension officers and these included brief visits to packing houses.

Plant disease
Brown rot is a serious disease of citrus, which fortunately has proved to be readily controllable. It attacks both leaves and fruits causing partial or complete defoliation, and a rather characteristic fruit rot. The disease may also affect the bark of citrus trees in the basal trunk region resulting in "collar rot," or as it is sometimes called, brown rot gummosis. This phase of the disease will be referred to later.

This important disease, known also as Footrot, Blackleg, and Whiteheads, affects wheat principally, but also occurs on barley, rye, and certain grasses. In a very few instances it has been known to attack oats, but this is so rare that oats may be regarded for practical purposes as free from attack. Of the grasses attacked the most important, from a farming point of view in Western Australia, are Bailey Grass (Hordeum murinum), Silver Grass (Festuca bromoides and F. myuros), and the so-called Spear grasses (Bromus spp.). These annual grasses are very common in the wheat belt.
