This bibliography has been compiled as part of a programme to develop new and improved techniques for the insect disinfestation of export cut-flowers and cut-foliage. The objective of the programme is to identify the most effective disinfestation treatments. Suitable treatments should kill insects in the flowers without directly injuring the flowers or reducing their postharvest life.
The bibliography presents references relating to the disinfestation of ornamental material (i.e. cut-flowers, cut-foliage, and potted plants). However, it also includes references on disinfestation of fruit, vegetables, and stored grain where this information has some relevance to the disinfestation of ornamental materials. The influence of planting date on fall and spring net blotch epidemics (caused by Pyrenophora teres) was evaluated with the winter barley cultivar Pennrad. Experiments were conducted in Centre County, Pennsylvania, in 1982 and 1983 and in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1983. The three planting dates evaluated corresponded to the recommended date as well as dates I wk earlier and later than recommended for each specific location. Planting date had a significant influence on fall net blotch epidemics, with the greatest and least disease severities observed in the earliest and latest plantings, respectively. For many years, Australia has been the only large land mass in the world in which potato cyst nematode has not been found. However, in 1986, potato cyst nematode was found on four properties at Munster 10km south of Perth, Western Australia.
Potato cyst nematode is a minute worm like organism which attacks the roots of several plant species including potatos, causing very high yield losses. It is a very serious pest of potatoes throughout the world and strict quarantine controls are enforced in countries and potato-growing areas froo of nematode.

Pineapples were investigated commercially in Carnarvon in the early 1930's but drought, sunscorch, alkaline soils and problems with transport and marketing caused the infant industry to collapse in 1936.
Recently however, trials at Gascoyne Research Station have shown that pineapples can produce good yields of high quality fruit in the area.
The trials have been aimed at establishing the viability of pineapple production at Carnarvon and have been carried out by officers of the Horticulture Division.

Powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) markedly affects the growth and vigour of susceptible apple varieties, particularly Jonathan and Cleopatra.
The fungus survives the winter as mycelial threads in dormant buds on spurs and laterals infected the previous season. At bud-burst the mycelium grows onto the developing leaves and blossom clusters to form white patches.
Spores produced on these patches are spread by the wind onto the healthy growth.

During the 1950's, a decline in bananas in plantations in Carnarvon, caused by heavy infestations of eelworms, prompted investigations into eelworm control.

Trifoliata and Troyer citrange are most suitable for replant areas.

THE idea of eliminating cultivation in orchards suggests a reversal of accepted local practice in orchard soil management—but there is plenty of evidence to show that a noncultivation system has much in its favour.
In this article the advantages and disadvantages of the three main forms of orchard soil management are discussed and experimental evidence is presented in support of noncultivation.
An alternative method, "winter sod" culture, is proposed for irrigated orchards.

LEAF SPOT is the most serious disease of celery in Western Australia, and causes heavy losses in many crops during the cold wet months of June, July and August.
The disease is incited by the fungus Septoria apii Chester, and was first recorded in this State at Osborne Park in 1923.
Since then it has become a limiting factor in the production of marketable celery during the winter months.

ROOT galling caused by root knot eelworm attack is very common in the lighter sandy soils of Western Australia.
This parasitic worm causes severe unthriftiness which may even result in the death of the plant, particularly during the summer months when the disease is most damaging.

Complete control of this common physiological disorder of tomatoes cannot as yet be achieved, but a number of measures can be employed to reduce its incidence.
DURING the summer months many tomato specimens are received showing symptoms of blossom-end rot.
Many growers attribute this trouble to parasitic organisms and are anxious to prevent it spreading to the rest of their crop.
However as blossom-end rot is not a parasitic disease, it cannot be controlled by fungicidal or bactericidal sprays.

Brown Spot is a serious fungal disease of passion fruit in this State.
Successful crop production is dependent on adequate disease control in the plantation.
BROWN SPOT is found in plantings throughout Western Australia. Severe outbreaks of the disease have occurred in most districts, including Serpentine, Manjimup, Nannup and Denmark.
Although isolated young plantings may remain healthy for two or three years, the disease eventually becomes established in the vines.

SEPTORIA leaf spot was first observed on tomatoes in Western Australia in 1925.
