University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This circular is a progress report of variety trials conducted by personnel of the Agronomy Department and the South Central, West Central and Panhandle Research and Extension Centers and their associated agricultural laboraties. The 2000 estimated winter wheat yield for Nebraska was a 36 bushels per acre from 1,750,000 harvested acres. The total production of winter wheat for the state was 63,000,000 bushels. This circular reports data from winter wheat trials conducted throughout Nebraska. Entries included varieties or hybrids and promising experimental strains from Nebraska and surrounding states and private breeders. This was the ninetenth year for privately developed varieties. …

Accelerating Variety Release With Double Haploids, Sue Broughton Jan 1999

Accelerating Variety Release With Double Haploids, Sue Broughton

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The use of plant tissue culture to produce special lines called doubled haploids is reducing the time taken to breed new varieties of cereal crops by up to three years. Sue Broughton outlines what doubled haploids are, how they are produced, and why they have been able to short circuit the usual lengthy breeding process.

Durum Wheat : A Potential New Crop For Western Australia, Alfredo Impiglia, Wal Anderson Jan 1998

Durum Wheat : A Potential New Crop For Western Australia, Alfredo Impiglia, Wal Anderson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The export orientation of our grains industries and the current favourable position of durum wheat in the world trade make this an opportune time to examine the propsects for durum wheat in Western Australia. Alfredo Impiglia and Wal Anderson summarise the known requirements for consistant production of high quality durum that will lead to the establshment of a new industry in Western Australia.

Wheat Quality And Wheat Variety Decisions, Mark Stevens Jan 1992

Wheat Quality And Wheat Variety Decisions, Mark Stevens

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The choice between which wheat variety to plant has always been a trade-off between yield and wheat quality. When wheat prices were higher and quality payments were less, quality considerations were of little importance and varieties were selected almost entirely on yield potential. Now, with low wheat prices and a greater emphasis on wheat quality from our customers, growers must place more importance on quality characteristics when selecting varieties. For example, should a grower select a higher yielding average quality wheat such as Spear, or a lower yielding, good quality wheat such as Machete? The important question a wheat grower …

Bulletin No 4220 - Growing High Yielding Wheat Crops In The Central Wheatbelt, Michael Perry Mar 1991

Bulletin No 4220 - Growing High Yielding Wheat Crops In The Central Wheatbelt, Michael Perry

Bulletins 4000 -

In this Bulletin we hope to provide you with what we believe is the best and most up-to-date information about growing wheat in your particular environment.

It is now more important than ever for producers to get the most out of their resources of land, labour and capital. The key to doing that is the knowledge to do even better what you probably do well already-growing wheat.

Wheat Quality For The Japanese Flour Milling And Noodle Industries, Graham Crosbie, Dianne Miskelly, Tim Dewan Jan 1990

Wheat Quality For The Japanese Flour Milling And Noodle Industries, Graham Crosbie, Dianne Miskelly, Tim Dewan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

About one-third of Australia's wheat production is used in the manufacture of Asian noodles. Japan is one of our most important noodle wheat markets. In that country much of the 900,000 to 1,000,000 tonnes of Australian wheat bought each year is used for noodle production. About 70 per cent of this wheat is Australian Standard White (ASW)from Western Australia. ASWis highly regarded for its suitability for the production of white, Japanese-style noodles. The remainder comprises mainly Australian Prime Hard (APH) which is valued for the production of yellow, Chinese-style noodles and for various breads. This article discusses quality aspects associated …

Early Sowing Of Ceral Crops In Low Rainfall Areas, R J. Delane, John Hamblin Jan 1989

Early Sowing Of Ceral Crops In Low Rainfall Areas, R J. Delane, John Hamblin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

One of the objectives of the Department of Agriculture's crop research in the low rainfall, northern wheatbelt is to develop crop varieties and management practices that will make best use of stored water on both sandplain and fine textured soils. Sowing a crop early will improve its water use efficiency and yiel in low rainfall areas.

Increasing Protein Content Of Wheat By Breeding, B R. Whan, Graham Crosbie Jan 1987

Increasing Protein Content Of Wheat By Breeding, B R. Whan, Graham Crosbie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The most efficient means of increasing protein content of WesternAustralian wheat is by breeding new varieties with higher inherent protein in their grain. But is this possible without sacrificing yeild or other desirable characteristics?

Increasing Wheat Yields Through Breeding, B R. Whan, R. Gilmour Jan 1986

Increasing Wheat Yields Through Breeding, B R. Whan, R. Gilmour

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

With the current 'cost price' sueeze facing Australia's farmers, the development of new higher yielding varieties is moe important that ever. By growing higher yielding varieties, farmers can increase their returns at virtuakky no additional cost: for example a wheat variety that produces 5 per cent extra yield from 1 t/ha crop returns about an additional $8/ha. Farmers can therefore increase their production by growing improved varieties.

Crop Variety Testing And Recommendations, H M. Fisher Jan 1984

Crop Variety Testing And Recommendations, H M. Fisher

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

From 1984 onwards, the Department of Agriculture's crop variety recommendations for Western Australia will be set out in a new format directly related to the 18 variety testing areas into which the South-West has been divided. These divisions should enable growers to more readily identify the recommendations which apply to their area. In addition, yield data on the varieties are provided for each area.

The recommendations are the culmination of a lenghty process of breeding, selection and testing of crop varieties. This article gives the background to the tests and how the results are used as the basis for the …

Breeding Wheat Varieties For Acid Soils, I R. Barclay Jan 1984

Breeding Wheat Varieties For Acid Soils, I R. Barclay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Wheat varieties with improved tolerance of acid soils cold increase yeilds be perhaps 20 per cent or more over a substantialarea ofWestern Australia's eastern wheatbelt.

Aluminium toxicity is probably the main cause of poor root growth and therefore reduced yields on these soils.
