Regulating Growth Of An Aquatic Plant: Lemna Perpusilla, Willard L. Koukkari, Stanley H. Duke

Growth rates of Lemna perpusilla 6746 can be regulated in axenic cultures by 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) . Concentrations of 10-BM BA significantly enhanced growth, while levels of 10-7M and Higher were inhibitory. These effects of BA on growth were evident when calculated as either fresh weight of frond number.

The primary body of the root of Cyclamen persicum Mill. is described. The rootcap consists of two components of separate origin. Cells of the columella are derived from the dermatocalyptrogen by periclinal wall formation. Further growth of the columella is due primarily to the increase in size of existing cells. Cells of the lateral rootcap arise from the protoderm by periclinal wall formation. Continued growth in this region is due to both increase in cell number and increase in size of existing cells. Proximal to the dermatocalyptrogen is the presumptive quiescent center. Around the periphery of this zone are located …

Influence Of Soil Acidity On The Occurrence Of Athiorhodaceae, Eville Gorham, Douglas C. Pratt

Enrichment cultures from strongly acid Sphagnum bog peats and moderately acid to circumneutral fen peats revealed Athiorhodaceae to be present in almost all suitably wet samples above pH 5.3 and absent from almost all samples below pH 4.7. These bacteria were recorded in only one of fifty cultures from acid humus layers in a jack pine forest, and in none of thirty cultures from moderately acid humus layers in a mixed woodland. They were also absent from old-field surface soils, which often contained considerable amounts of organic litter.

After decapitation of pea plants, with resultant growth of lateral buds, the thickness of vascular tissue appeared to be correlated with the growth rate of buds. Basal lateral shoots had better developed vascular strands than buds on upper parts of the plants. IAA application retarded growth of the lateral buds and inhibited their vascular connections, but all lateral buds eventually grew in spite of the IAA application.

A Disc Electrophoretic Procedure For Separating Proteins Of Marchantia Polymorpha: Esterases., Jerome Anaya, Donald J. Kraft

Extracts from Marchanlia polymorpha were used in the development of a disc electrophoretic procedure for the separation of proteins. Dialyzed and fresh extracts were found to produce best resolution when electrophoresed in Tris-Glycine buffer (pH 8.3) and 50 millamps current for 45-60 minutes. The esterase enzyme system was used as an indication of separation. Significantly, 5 bands were detected in induced thalli attesting to the sensitivity and application of this method to developmental studies.

A procedure for estimating the total root length, root surface, and root hair surface is described for greenhouse-grown soybeans. Data are presented on the extent of the root systems of 3-week and 14-week old soybeans. The possibility of correlating data from greenhouse-grown soybeans with that of field-grown soybeans as a method to make some predictions on extent of the root systems of field-grown soybeans is suggested.

It is known that chlorophyll content of plant material varies with the season of the year, though the fact is sometimes lost sight of in studies of particular plant communities. Measurement of seasonal changes has been more often done with higher plants: e.g., Compton and Boynton (1945), Bordeau ( 1959). But Myiata and Hosokowa (1961) studied these changes in epiphytic mosses as correlated with photosynthetic efficiency.

Field and laboratory studies of the silky prairie clover (Petalostemon villosum Nutt.) in central Minnesota indicated that seeds of this plant require scarification but do not require an overwintering period, to germinate. Germination and primary root growth are rapid; shoot growth appears to be quite slow. Methods of associating shoot growth with age are suggested and several notes on the life history of the plant ore presented.

Embryos of germinating seeds of Arceuthobium pusillum have four histological zones: the protoderm of the radicular apex, which remains distinct throughout germination and through anticlinal divisions gives rise to the epidermis; the procambium, which matures into a simple vascular strand in the mature radicle; the ground meristem, which matures into the cortex; and the promeristem, from which the procambium and ground meristem are derived.

Isoetes macrospora Dur. was found growing in 20 inches to 4 ft. of water in several sandy-bottomed lakes in Itasca County, Minnesota. The pH of the lakes was about 6 and the characteristic tree species of the immediate shorelines were: Thuja occidentalis, Pinus resinosa, Abies balsomea, Populus tremuloides, and Betula papyrifera. Experimental and normal plants were grown submerged in 1-liler beakers in the greenhouse for the 2-week experimental period. The normal shoot apex of /. macrospora is described as having three zones. Zone I, the metrameristem, consists of the superficial layer of initials which divide usually by anticlinal divisions and …

The root nodules of a series of legumes were investigated with and without inoculum in sterilized growing material as well as in open soil to find plants that synthesize extractable amounts of porphyrins. These experiments were a preliminary study toward the investigation of the influence of heavy metal salts on the increased production of porphyrins.

The growth and reproduction of Vallisneria as seen and photographed below water in Christmas Lake, Hennepin County, Minnesota, is described. The functions of the water surface film, of wave energy, and of the coiled stem of the pistillate flower, in fertilization is discussed. It is found that many of the plants grow in such depths that fertilization is impossible.

A Comparative Study Of Wood Pulp From The Trunk, Limbs, And Roots Of The Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides), John Vernanth, Raynell Walker, Ann Johnson

A three part study was conducted on a single quaking aspen tree (Populus tremuloides): ( l) the strength and other physical properties of fiberboard made from the trunk, roots, and limbs using the cold soda pulping process, (2) the strength properties of paper made from the trunk, root, and limb sections using the Kraft pulping process, and (3) a chemical analysis of the trunk, roots, and limbs. Results of these studies indicate there are significant differences in many of the properties of the three parts of the tree, and that parts of the tree other than the trunk possess useful …

Approximately 120 years ago in Europe is was learned that certain fungi liberated arsenous gases when they were grown on substrates containing arsenic. This was especially apparent when certain molds grew on paste on wall paper in damp rooms, converting arsenic-containing pigments in the wall paper into a gas with a garlic-like odor. This resulted in numerous cases of arsenic poisoning of people living in these rooms; some of these people died.
