A Taxonomic And Distributional Survey Of The Benthic Blue-Green Algal Flora Of The Skokomish River Estuary, Louis J. Boitano

This paper presents a taxonomic and distributional survey of the benthic blue-green algal flora within an estuary system. Physical parameters were considered in the seasonal growth and distribution of algal species. A majority of the observed species occur in all habitats of the estuary and are present throughout the year. Seasonal growth rates and distribution are primarily dependent upon light intensity, temperature, salinity, and substrate condition. The largest extent of growth and distribution occurs in the late spring and summer months at which time the abiotic factors are most favorable for the development of benthic algal communities.

In this study a multivariate statistical analysis utilizes the linear discriminant function that has been used to substantiate the shift of the variety lagocephala (Sharp) Cronq., from Balsamorhiza hirsuta, to B. hookeri (Cronquist, 1955). This method can be used to determine the placement of other questionable taxa.
In addition, this paper deals with the history, morphology and distribution of B. hirsuta, B. hookeri var. hookeri, and B. hookeri var. lagocephala.

An investigation was made to document the structure and composition of the flora along Swauk Creek, a riparian transect into Central Washington's Cascade Range. Distributions of the major species are discussed and a key has been constructed to facilitate identification of the riparian associations.

Head lettuce, Lactuta sativa var. capitata, is susceptible to a number of economically important diseases, the most frequent being russet spot, rib discoloration, and vascular browning (28), which have been shown by Ceponis and Friedman (7) to be caused by Pseudomonas marginalis. Pseudomonads are common plant pathogens and cause such diseases as halo blight in beans (20), bacterial blight in soybeans (20), and bacterial wilt of the bird-of-paradise (27) and tobacco (24).
Plants that develop symptoms similar to russet of lettuce are oats, infected by Pseudomonas cichorii, and tobacco infected with Pseudomonas tobaci (34). In general, russet symptoms …

Certain chemicals are known to inhibit growth in many plant species. These chemicals possess a common trait, the ability to inhibit stem elongation by suppressing the activity of the subapical meristematic region (11). These growth retardants have been extensively studied during the past several years in an effort to determine the biochemical mechanism responsible for reduction in plant height. The characteristic effect of these chemical retardants on the growth pattern has been described as producing plants with shorter, thicker stems and broader, darker green leaves. The vascular anatomy of 13 of the 15 genera of the Hydrocharitaceae has been studied, and certain aspects of floral morphology are considered. The flowers of the family show a broad range of specialized structures combined with primitive characteristics. The origin of paired and single stamens is interpreted as probable modifications of fascicled stamens. Extreme reduction in the androecium is shown for several genera. Tendencies toward reduction and fusion within the gynoecium are pronounced. Most genera are at least slightly syncarpous, but a few are apocarpous. The inferior ovary is appendicular in nature, with some genera exhibiting more complete fusion …

Root systems from ten species of desert angiosperms were collected and examined histologically to determine the xylem patterns of the primary, secondary, and tertiary roots. The plants used in the study were Cleome serrulata Push, Croton texenis (Klotzch) Muell. Arg., Franseria acanthicarpa (Hook.) Coville, Gutierrezia microphala (D.C.) The classification and distribution of Ratibida columnifera var. columnifera Woot. and Standl. and R. columnifera var. pulcherrima (DC.) Woot. and Standl. are complex. Some floras list R. columnifera var. pulcherrima as a purple colored form or variety of the species while other authors refer to this taxon as a separate species of Ratibida. The purpose of this study is to clarify the taxonomic status of the two forms by determining and differences in morphology, distribution, taxonomy, and ecology.

A survey of literature shows that no community or bioecological study has ever been made of the pinyon pine-juniper association as it occurs in the Upper Sonoran Life Zone in New Mexico and southern Colorado. This deficiency of knowledge relative to the pinyon pine-juniper community is in direct contrast to several studies that have been made of the same community in Arizona and Utah by the presence of dominant trees of entirely different species. Gardeners have always been interested in herbaceous plants, chiefly because of their beauty and usefulness. As a result of the great popularity, a large number of attractive varieties have been produced through centuries of' cultivation, selection and breeding. Very early agricultural and medical demands stimulated an interest in the plants, and as early as 372-287 B.C. Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle, described about 460 cultivated plants and classified them as herbs, undershrubs, shrubs and trees. The Englishman, Robert Hooke (1661), revolutionized the botanical sciences when he announced his discovery of the fact that plant tissues are composed of cavities which he called cells. The leaf, as the seat of important physiological functions of the plant, and because of its modification by external factors, has long been a fruitful subject for investigation. As a rule, however, investigators have confined themselves solely to the histology and morphology of the leaf, independent of its relations to physical factors. Where the latter have been considered at all, it has been in a more or less general way, or undue importance has been assigned to one or another of the physical factors, and others have been ignored entirely.
