Novelty, specialty or personalized melons are generally smaller and different from traditional Midwest watermelons, cantaloupes or muskmelons. Sugar Cube is a successful example. This project by MU Extension was to evaluate four novelty melons on yield, quality and storage, with Sugar Cube as the control. Included in the evaluation were Brilliant (Canary), Honey Orange (crispy flesh Honeydew), Lambkin (Piel De Sapo), and Lilly (small & early Crenshaw). Each has an appearance and taste profile distinctly different from cantaloupe. The results of this project should give confidence to growers interested in novelty melons, especially for Brilliant (Canary type) and Lambkin (Piel …

Colored Sweet Bell And Tapered Pepper Cultivar Evaluation For High Tunnel Production In West-Central Indiana, 2019, Petrus Langenhoven
Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
There is huge potential for the production of sweet bell and tapered peppers in high tunnels. However, information regarding appropriate varieties and yield potential in Indiana is lacking. This paper reports on ten colored sweet bell and tapered pepper varieties that were evaluated at the Purdue Student Farm, West Lafayette, Indiana. Top bell pepper varieties include Chesapeake and Flavorburst. Carmen and Escamillo were some of the top tapered pepper performers.

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
This is a compilation of 15 research trial reports from four land-grant universities in the Midwestern United States. Crops include cantaloupe, pickling cucumber, pepper, potato, pumpkin, summer squash and zucchini, sweet corn, tomato, and watermelon. Somecrops were evaluated in high tunnels or hoophouses. Most trials evaluated different cultivars or varieties. One report addressed plant spacing for sweet corn and one addressed soil block for production of tomato seedlings. A list of vegetable seed sources and a list of other online sources of vegetable trial reports are also included.

Zucchini Cultivar Evaluation For Production In West-Central Indiana, 2018, Petrus Langenhoven
Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
The state of Indiana is not known nationally as a major zucchini producing state. However, small farm operators produce zucchini generally for local farmers markets, restaurants and some retail outlets. Gowers always wants to know which variety is most suitable for their farming location and market. There are a plethora of varieties available that have different fruit types and growth habits. Characteristics like potential yield and disease resistance are always very important considerations for growers. This paper reports on ten zucchini entries (Table 1; Fig. 3-12) that were evaluated at the Throckmorton Purdue Agriculture Center/Meigs Horticulture Facility, Lafayette, Indiana.

Tomato Cultivar Evaluation In High Tunnels, Northern Indiana, 2017, Elizabeth Maynard, Erin A. Bluhm
Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
Tomatoes are a common crop grown in unheated greenhouses, commonly called high tunnels. Production in these structures has increased in recent years. This trial was conducted to evaluate varieties for their performance as a summer-harvested crop in soil-based high tunnel production systems. Five hybrid determinate varieties or line, one hybrid indeterminate, and one open-pollinated indeterminate variety were compared for yield, earliness, fruit size, and quality.
