This booklet is one of a series covering the agricultural region of Western Australia and provides agricultural land managers with information relating to some of the natural resources of the Shire of Wagin including the existing vegetation, drainage systems and soils. Some of the problems relating to the management of natural resources in the Shire of Wagin and possible solutions to these problems are also discussed. By providing this information it is hoped that this booklet will contribute to the long term viability of the agricultural landscape and the conservation of native vegetation within the Shire.

The Southern Wheatbelt Region Remnant Vegetation Survey was funded by the Save the Bush program, and aimed at surveying pieces of on-farm remnant vegetation in the "Great Southern" of Western Australia. At the outset a total of 13 shires were selected for survey, namely: Broomehill, Corrigin, Dumbleyung, Katanning, Kent, Kondinin, Kulin, Lake Grace, Narrogin, Tambellup, Wagin, Wickepin, Woodanilling. However, time constraints (available funding indicated a time frame of 40 weeks for the project to be completed) meant that subsequently Kent and Lake Grace shires (two of the largest) had to be dropped from the survey to allow for proper completion …

Knowledge of the pasture resource and its capabilities is essential to sustainable use of the rangelands. Rangeland managers must be able to recognise firstly the different pasture types, and secondly, the differences between present condition classes for each type. Both factors affect the stock carrying capacity, and appropriate pastoral management of a pasture. This guide has been produced for use by pastoralists to assist them to recognise and assess the condition of the perennial pasture resource of their own properties. This report provides a description of the landforms, soils and vegetation of Rottnest Island. In addition, it provides a discussion of the relative capability of each of the landforms of the island to sustain various forms of development. The primary objective of this work is to direct development into areas of high capability (low risk of land degradation) in preference to areas of lower capability (higher risk of land degradation).

The Effect Of Hurricane Allen On The Near-Shore Vegetation Of South Padre Island, Frank W. Judd, Sammie L. Sides

The effect of Hurricane Allen (Aug. 10, 1980) on the near-shore vegetation of South Padre Island was assessed by comparing data obtained in line transects before and after the hurricane. Eight species of plants were present in the Backshore Zone prior to the hurricane; after the hurricane, only three species were present and percent cover was only 11% of that before the hurricane. The foredunes of this zone were completely leveled and a belt of Sesuvium portulacastrum was obliterated. Conversely, plants of the taller Primary Dune Zone were not greatly disturbed by the hurricane. Numbers of species and percent cover …

THE mulga pastoral zone is so named since most of its area is dominated by Mulga (Acacia aneura).
The mulga is found associated with shrubs and grasses in almost all plant habitats. In its various forms it can associate with spinifex (Triodia basedowi), Wandarrie Grasses (Danthonia, Eragostis and Eriachne spp.) and with low shrubs on flood plains, hills and breakaways. It may even attempt to become established in salty communities, though this is never completely successful.
The scene the area offers from its low hills is one of a succession of low undulations, occasionally scarred by creeks or breakaways and …

The sandhill area of Nebraska occupies approximately 20,000 square miles of the central portion of the state. Being unadapted to cultivation, the land is for the most part still covered with native vegetation. It is utilized primarily for the production of livestock, chiefly cattle. During the period 1931 to 1938 the sandhills carried annually an average of 1,041,000 cattle, which amounted to 31 per cent of the total number in the state. The management practices used in the Nebraska sandhills have gained national recognition as a good example of range conservation in the United States. The purpose of this study …
