Twenty-three populations belonging to 10 wild Primula L. (Primulaceae) taxa of Turkey, some of which are morphologically quite similar, were investigated based on nrDNA ITS regions. The plant materials were collected from different geographical areas of Anatolia in vegetation periods of 2005 and 2006. Total genomic DNAs were isolated from the healthy leaves of each population. The entire ITS regions of the populations were amplified by universal primers with the aid of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and then the PCR products were sequenced. Neighbour-Joining (NJ) and Maximum Parsimony (MP) trees were constructed in order to identify the relationships among …

Scorzonera ketzkhovelii Grossh. (Asteraceae) was recently collected from Yusufeli, Artvin (north-east Anatolia) and it has been reported as a new species record for the flora of Turkey. It is described and illustrated. In addition, its karyological features and pollen morphology are given.

A New Subspecies Of Stachys Cretica (Section Eriostomum, Lamiaceae) From Turkey, Ekrem Akçi̇çek

Stachys cretica L. subsp. kutahyensis Akçiçek subsp. nova is described as a new subspecies from West Anatolia, Turkey. It is related to Stachys cretica L. subsp. vacillans Rech. f. and Stachys cretica L. subsp. anatolica Rech. f., from which it differs in stem, leaf, and flower characters. Diagnostic characters, description, detailed illustrations, and taxonomic comments of the new subspecies are given. The geographical distribution of the subspecies is mapped. IUCN threat category and observations on the population are noted.

As an initial part of a revisional study based on the genus Salvia L. (Lamiaceae), extensive field studies, herbarium and literature surveys, and multivariate analysis have been conducted on the basis of the Salvia euphratica sensu lato (S. cerino-pruinosa, S. euphratica, S. leiocalycina, and S. pseudeuphratica) and its closely related species (S. kronenburgii and S. sericeo-tomentosa) in order to understand their taxonomic status. For the multivariate analysis, 35 OTUs (Operational Taxonomic Units) representing 24 populations of the species were investigated and scored on the basis of 25 character states by means of MVSP software. Macrofungi Of Derebucak District (Konya, Turkey), Si̇nan Alkan, Giyasetti̇n Kaşik, Si̇nan Aktaş

Macrofungi specimens were collected from different localities in Derebucak district (Konya province) between 2005 and 2007, particularly during the autumn and spring. As a result 134 species were identified. Thirteen of them belong to Ascomycota, and the other 121 belong to the division Basidiomycota. According to the present literature about the macrofungi of Turkey, 6 taxa are new records for Turkey. These are Lachnellula calyciformis (Willd.) Dharne of the division Ascomycota, and Hebeloma stenocystis J.Favre, Cortinarius calochrous var. coniferarum (M.M.Moser) Nezdojm., Cortinarius cupreorufus Brandrud, Inocybe ayeri Furrer-Ziogas, and Calocera pallidospathulata D.A.Reid of the division Basidiomycota.

Seed Morphology Of Ebenus L. Species Endemic To Turkey, Fatma Bayrakdar, Zeki̇ Aytaç, Zeki̇ye Suludere, Selami̇ Candan

In the present study, seed surface morphology of species of the genus Ebenus L. in Turkey, all of which are endemic, was studied. E. plumosa var. speciosa has the biggest and E. laguroides var. laguroides has the smallest seeds. The seed shapes are spheroid in E. reesei, orbiculate in E. pisidica, and oblong-spheroid in others. Ornamentation is striate in E. macrophylla, rugose in E. haussknechtii, and reticulate or multi-reticulate in others. Microphylle is subterminal in all Turkish Ebenus species.

Species Composition And Diversity Of Epipelic Algae In Balık Lake (Şavşat-Artvin, Turkey), Bülent Şahi̇n, Bülent Akar, İmran Bahçeci̇

The species composition and diversity of the epipelic algae of Balık Lake were investigated between May and October 2008. A total of 39 taxa were determined, and Cyclotella meneghiniana, Craticula cuspidata, Closterium strigosum, Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta, and Amphora ovalis were the most conspicuous algae, regarding frequency of occurrence and relative abundance in the epipelic algal flora. While the highest total cell number of the epipelic community was 26,214 cells/cm^2 in October, the lowest was 23,644 cells/cm^2 in July. The highest species diversity index (H^{'}) value was 2.26, in June.

Michauxia nuda A.DC. (Campanulaceae) is recorded for the first time (C8 Siirt province) from Turkey. The diagnostic characters of M. nuda are described and its habitat and conservation status are indicated. Besides, it is illustrated, and a distribution map is presented. Notes on collecting number of type specimen of this species are provided.

Trichome shapes were investigated on the outer and inner surfaces of fruit valves of 43 species of Erysimum L., 20 of which are endemic to Turkey, by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Five species, Erysimum sorgerae Polatschek., E. huber-morathii Polatschek, E. cheiri (L.) Crantz, E. repandum L. and E. vuralii Yild. were identified, in which there are trichomes on the inner surface of fruit valves, which was determined for the first time in these species. The taxonomical status of Campanula tomentosa Lam. and C. vardariana Bocquet, belonging to the section Quinqueloculares (Boiss.) Phitos, which have important taxonomical problems, was reviewed in this study. Furthermore, morphological, anatomical leaf surface, and palynological features of these 2 species were examined in detail. Habit, shape of leaves, calyx, corolla, stamen, pistil, and seed micromorphological features as morphological characters; and pollen diameter, pore diameter, spinule length, and number, ornamentation, etc. as palynological characters, were examined and discussed. The precise evaluation of the conservation status of endemic and rare species is necessary in order to prevent their extinction. According to our current taxonomic revision of Turkish Salvia L., the Mediterranean and Aegean geographic regions of Turkey have 60 taxa, 32 of which are endemic (mainly local endemics), 5 of which are non-endemic rare, and the remaining 23 taxa are widely distributed. The rate of endemism is 53% in the area. The destruction of habitat through human encroachment such as urbanisation, land clearing, overgrazing, pollution, and road and dam constructions is the principal threat in the study area. Based …

Twenty-four new records for freshwater algae of Turkey were determined in a study conducted from February 2007 to January 2009 in Çaygören Reservoir, Balıkesir, Turkey. Among these, 3 were Cyanobacteria, 3 Euglenophyta, 15 Chlorophyta, 1 Charophyta, 1 Heterokontophyta, and 1 was Dinophyta.

Allium dentiferum Webb & Berthel and Allium dodecanesii Karavokyrou & Tzanoudak were collected during a floristic study of South Anatolia. A. dodecanesii is reported as a new record for the flora of Turkey. Although collected earlier by Aznavour, Bothmer, and Brullo, specimens of A. dentiferum were misinterpreted and the species was thus not recorded for the flora of Turkey. We provide drawings and photographs of the species, and maps of their distribution in Turkey.

Comparison Of The Epiphytic Lichen Communities Growing On Various Tree Species On Mt. Uludağ (Bursa, Turkey), Şule Öztürk, Şaban Güvenç

A total of 48 epiphytic lichen species were found on the various tree species (Abies nordmanniana (Stev.) Spach subsp. bornmuelleriana (Mattf.) Coode & Cullen, Fagus orientalis Lipsky, and Pinus nigra Arnold. subsp. pallasiana (Lamb.) Holmboe) that formed communities on the north-west, extending from 1300 to 1600 m altitudes, of Mt. Uludağ in Bursa. Twenty-five epiphytic lichen species that occur on more than 4 sample trees were statistically analysed. The most frequent species were Pseudevernia furfuracea L. (Zopf.), Hypogymnia tubulosa (Schaer.) Hav., Parmelia sulcata Taylor, Lecanora chlarotera Nyl., and Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach., in descending order. Indicator species for Fagus orientalis …

Aegilops juvenalis (Thell.) Eig (Poaceae) is recorded and vouchered for the first time from Turkey. This first vouchered wild record is confined to Ceylanpınar province in C8 Şanlıurfa. The diagnostic morphological characters discriminating it from of Aegilops crassa Boiss. are pointed out. Notes are presented on its ecology and phenology. A distribution map of this species is also given.

Some new records of Inocybe (Fr.) Fr. based on samples collected from Osmaniye, Kilis, and Isparta provinces are presented. Inocybe flocculosa var. crocifolia (Herink) Kuyper, I. ochroalba Bruyl., I. pallida Velen., I. splendens var. splendens R. Heim, I. substellata Kühner, and I. vaccina Kühner were determined to be new records from Turkey.

Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) is one of the largest genera in Turkey. The chromosome number and morphology of 8 taxa belonging to the genus Centaurea were investigated using an image analysis system. Among these taxa, the chromosome numbers were as follows: 2n = 18 in C. cariensis Boiss. subsp. niveotomentosa (Hub.-Mor.) The Rediscovery Of Some Taxa Thought To Have Been Extinct In Turkey, Ali̇ Kandemi̇r

This paper reports the re-discovery of Barbarea auriculata Hausskn. ex Bornm. var. auriculata (Brassicaceae), Onobrychis nitida Boiss. (Fabaceae), Onosma discedens Hausskn. ex Bornm. (Boraginaceae), and Silene oligotricha Hub.-Mor. (Caryophyllaceae). All of these taxa had been listed as Extinct (EX), according to the World Conservation Union Red List Categories. This study provides the re-descriptions of these taxa, presents field observations of these taxa, and suggests new IUCN categories.

Cosmarium botrytis Menegh. ex Ralfs var. tumidum Wolle, Cosmarium notabile Bréb. var. transiens Insam et Krieger, Cosmarium tetragonum (Näg.) Arch. in Pritchard var. tetragonum, and Cosmarium vogesiacum Lemaire var. alpinum (Schmidle) Laporte are recorded for the first time for the desmid flora of Turkey. The desmids are recorded from Yedigöller Lakes in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey.

Phellinus sulphurascens Pilát was collected from juniper tree stumps (Juniperus excelsa and J. foetidissima) in two different localities situated in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. This very rare species is known in Europe only from the Ural Mountains in Russia. This fungus is an aggressive root rot pathogen associated with Douglas fir and other conifers in North America. This is the first report on juniper as a new host outside of its known distribution area.

A new Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) species from Turkey is described and illustrated. Centaurea dursunbeyensis Uysal & Köse exists on limestone crevices in ancient Dursunbey Forest (Balikesir) in western Anatolia. It belongs to C. sect. Phalolepis (Cass.) DC., and taxonomically its closest relatives are C. aphrodisea Boiss. and C. cadmea Boiss. Diagnostic morphological characters from very similar taxa are provided, and a key is provided that includes related species of sect. Phalolepis from Turkey. A fatal case of mushroom poisoning by Inocybe rimosa (Bull.) P. Kumm. in Isparta is reported and documented. The description of the poisonous taxon and a short discussion of the case of poisoning are presented.
