Vascular Flora Of Van Horn Woods, Plainfield Township, Will County, Il, Joseph Traina

The vascular flora at Van Horn Woods Park was surveyed during the 1998-2000 growing seasons. This park is a 30 hectare site located in Plainfield Township, Will County, Illi- nois (SE1/4 S27 T36N R9E). A total of 246 taxa, representing 160 genera and 67 fami- lies, were identified within or immediately adjacent to the park. Seventy-one percent of these taxa were native. Four taxa were collected and submitted to the Morton Arboretum as new county records for Will County. The quality of this site as a natural area was also assessed using quantitative methods based on floral composition and diversity. …

Habitat conversion and fire suppression during the last 50 yr have greatly reduced and altered Florida scrub vegetation, resulting in threats to the persistence of its unique flora. As part of a larger conservation project, we investigated patterns of isozyme variation in three rare perennial scrub plants with overlapping ranges endemic to Florida rosemary scrub on the Lake Wales Ridge. All three species have low levels of genetic variation, comparable to or lower than those generally reported for rare plants with restricted geographic ranges. We are at a critical juncture in the study of island organisms, which have become more accessible at the same time that they are vanishing. Saving a species from extinction may not insure that its future will continue as before, even when the surviving population is in a wild habitat. Former selection forces may be missing or replaced by others so that the species develops along a different evolutionary pathway. Such disruption of evolutionary direction may be particularly important for island taxa given that modification by humans and their introduced organisms is making many islands more similar to continental habitats. Oceanic archipelagos often hold very specialized floras with high degrees of endemism. These floras are frequently highly vulnerable to disturbance by natural causes and human intervention. The Juan Fernandez Islands (Chile) in the Pacific Ocean are a small archipelago of only three islands. Since discovery in 1574 by Juan Fernandez, human activities have altered floristic composition and survival circumstances of the endemic species. In this paper we document past and present means of disturbance, both anthropogenic and natural, which have influenced the native vegetation. Recent studies of genetic variation within and among populations and phylogenetic estimates have provided evidence bearing on the evolutionary history and taxonomy of Styrax in California (S. redivivus). In this paper, data from these studies are further analyzed and integrated with new data from morphology to gain insight into the nature and taxonomic significance of character variation within this species. Six morphological characters thought to be important in the delimitation of infraspecific taxa within S. redivivus were measured on 52 herbarium specimens and analyzed with Pearson correlations and multivariate methods. It is Department of Agriculture policy that regulation is only used when all other approaches to address land degradation have failed. Our thrust is to encourage land holders to move towards using land within its capabilities as they continue to adopt sustainable farming systems. Underlying this approach is a self regulatory philosophy with land conservation district committees playing an important management and coordination role. Nevertheless the community expects that land degradation will be controlled and legislation is available to underpin or complement the good intentions of most land holders. Report No 41 - A Survey Method For Identifying Roadside Flora Suitable For Conservation In Western Australia, John K. Scott

Fisheries Research Reports

A survey method for identifying flora suitable for conservation alongside roads in south-western Australia was derived from an examination of characteristics of road verges. Two roads, from Midland to Toodyay and from Armadale to Bunbury, were examined. Width of verge, weed cover, soil disturbance, vegetation structure, presence of public utilities, evidence of fire and the type of adjoining land were measured at one mile (1.6 km) intervals on both sides of the road. Also recorded were aesthetic qualities such as stands of beautiful trees and sites of special interest, e.g. the presence of rare plants.

Fisheries Research Reports

A census and atlas is provided of 1 119 native Western Australian plant species which were commercially exploited during 1977-79 in the cut plant, nursery or seed trades. The exploited species are concentrated in the vicinities of Perth and Albany, the two matin centres for the wildflower industry. Preliminary assessments of the conservation status of the exploited species are provided. Approximately r200 species are regarded as being rare, geographically or poorly collected, and further studies are recommended for these species to determine whether they are in danger of overexploitation.

This article traces the early history of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, California, starting ca. 1867 with the Portolà Expedition. The expedition was the first to record the site where the botanic garden later came to be located, in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County. Successive changes in land ownership eventually led to the Bixby family purchasing the land in 1875. Susanna Bixby Bryant, the founder of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, acquired the land in 1925.

In 1950, the decision was taken to relocate Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden from its original site—Mrs. Susanna Bixby Bryant's ranch in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County—to today's Claremont location in eastern Los Angeles County. The move reflected a wish to align the founder's mandate to "foster scientific research and public welfare" by seeking affiliation with the Claremont Colleges. The change enabled it to train graduate students in botany and related fields and draw more visitors to a garden devoted to native California plants. The year 1927 marks the beginning of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden at its original location in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County, California. Letters exchanged between Susanna Bixby Bryant, the botanic garden founder, and various botanists and horticulturalists trace her efforts to obtain seed and planting stock, herbarium specimens, and books and periodicals for her library. Much discussion is devoted to the question of how to fill the position of Scientific Director.

Covering the period from approximately 1927 to 1947, this article deals with the management and running of the fledgling Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, featuring the publication of botanical and horticultural papers, the founding of the journal El Aliso, and detailed accounts of field work devoted to the collection of plants for the living collection and herbarium. This period of time also saw several challenges, notably serious damage from a wildfire in 1943, wartime constraints, and the death of the founder and managing director of the garden, Susanna Bixby Bryant.

Factors that may have been decisive in turning Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden into a successful establishment of botanical teaching and a garden devoted to the conservation and showcasing of the native California flora are put forward. In addition to the enthusiasm and tenacity of its founder, Susanna Bixby Bryant, inspiration and advice came from several other key figures, notably Carl Brandt Wolf, Ernest Braunton, Willis Linn Jepson, and Theodore Payne.
