The Santa Ana Mountains, as a whole, have been well-studied floristically. Little work, however, has been conducted previously in the southwestern portion of the range which includes the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness Area of the Cleveland National Forest. This study reports the results of our floristic surveys conducted in the wilderness over a three-year period, from December 1991 through October 1994. The study area, encompassing the headwaters of the San Mateo Canyon watershed, is topographically and geologically diverse. The Santa Ana Mountains, part of the Peninsular Ranges of southern California, have been welldocumented floristically. Nevertheless, since publication of a preliminary vascular flora for the range in 1978, a significant number of additions have been reported. These are principally from studies of two subregions in the southern portion of the range and include 42 taxa from the Santa Rosa Plateau and 88 taxa from the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness Area. Documentation is provided here for an additional 66 taxa not included in other published floristic accounts of the Santa Ana Mountains. Nonglandular Trichomes Of Californian And Hawaiian Tarweeds, Andrew A. Maclachlan, Sherwin Carlquist

The purpose of this paper was to demonstrate the diversity in nonglandular trichome morphology of tarweeds at the ultrastructural level, and to propose categories for the morphologies reported for such trichomes. Using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the authors surveyed 31 species of II genera of tarweeds from California and three genera of tarweeds from Hawaii. Trichome cell wall thickness in the Californian species ranged from 1 to 6 ~μm, whereas in the Hawaiian species trichome cell wall thickness ranged from 1 to 14 ~μm. Accurate identification of the species of Draba at high elevations in the White Mountains of eastern California and adjacent Nevada has been impossible because of frequent misinterpretations in the literature and the lack of a coherent source of information. A preliminary investigation of newly collected material suggested that several species of Draba, endemic or nearly so to these mountains, had not been recognized. Descriptions and relevant comparisons are given for a new combination, D. californica, and two new species, D. monoensis and D. subumbellata. This article traces the early history of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, California, starting ca. 1867 with the Portolà Expedition. The expedition was the first to record the site where the botanic garden later came to be located, in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County. Successive changes in land ownership eventually led to the Bixby family purchasing the land in 1875. Susanna Bixby Bryant, the founder of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, acquired the land in 1925.

In 1950, the decision was taken to relocate Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden from its original site—Mrs. Susanna Bixby Bryant's ranch in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County—to today's Claremont location in eastern Los Angeles County. The move reflected a wish to align the founder's mandate to "foster scientific research and public welfare" by seeking affiliation with the Claremont Colleges. The change enabled it to train graduate students in botany and related fields and draw more visitors to a garden devoted to native California plants. The year 1927 marks the beginning of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden at its original location in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County, California. Letters exchanged between Susanna Bixby Bryant, the botanic garden founder, and various botanists and horticulturalists trace her efforts to obtain seed and planting stock, herbarium specimens, and books and periodicals for her library. Much discussion is devoted to the question of how to fill the position of Scientific Director.

Covering the period from approximately 1927 to 1947, this article deals with the management and running of the fledgling Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, featuring the publication of botanical and horticultural papers, the founding of the journal El Aliso, and detailed accounts of field work devoted to the collection of plants for the living collection and herbarium. This period of time also saw several challenges, notably serious damage from a wildfire in 1943, wartime constraints, and the death of the founder and managing director of the garden, Susanna Bixby Bryant.

Factors that may have been decisive in turning Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden into a successful establishment of botanical teaching and a garden devoted to the conservation and showcasing of the native California flora are put forward. In addition to the enthusiasm and tenacity of its founder, Susanna Bixby Bryant, inspiration and advice came from several other key figures, notably Carl Brandt Wolf, Ernest Braunton, Willis Linn Jepson, and Theodore Payne.

Much work has been done on the remarkably diverse flora of California but few specific studies of the foothills of the Central Sierra Nevada Range have been undertaken. One such area is Calaveras County, a region rich in the early history of California.
The site chosen for this study ranges from approximately 2350 to 2700 feet in elevation. It is well defined by survey and accessible at all times of the year. The region covered by this study reaches from the valley floor of the San Joaquin-Sacramento Valley, with an altitude of about 150 feet, to the top of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, whose peaks, in Amador County, reach to more than 9000 feet. Mokelumne Peak has an altitude of 9371 feet. The north and south distance, across the county at Ione, is 22 miles, while at Cook's Station, it is barely 5 miles. Amador County has an area of about 600 square miles.
Thus, a study of trees in this county, gives a fairly representative cross-section picture of the Sierras at …
