This study of the vegetative anatomy of Picrodendron and some of its putative relatives has been undertaken in order better to understand its natural relationships. Despite the number of anatomical studies in the literature (Jadin, 1901; Solereder, 1908; Boas, 1913; Webber, 1936; Heimsch, 1942; Record & Hess, 1943; Metcalfe & Chalk, 1950), our information on the anatomy of Picrodendron is still incomplete· for example, nodal and petiolar anatomy has apparently never been described. Furthermore, with the exception of Record and Hess (1943), who discussed Picrodendron in a family by itself, other anatomists have compared Picrodendron only with members of Simaroubaceae, …

Much work has been done on the remarkably diverse flora of California but few specific studies of the foothills of the Central Sierra Nevada Range have been undertaken. One such area is Calaveras County, a region rich in the early history of California.
The site chosen for this study ranges from approximately 2350 to 2700 feet in elevation. It is well defined by survey and accessible at all times of the year. The primary objective of the study was to determine what vascular plant species occur naturally in the area. This was accomplished by extensive collections made from April 1970 …

Antibiotics first came to the public's attention in 1945, when penicillin and streptomycin were released by the United States government to fight human diseases. Later, other antibiotics were released and experimental work was done on control of plant and animal diseases. By 1948 plant pathologists found that certain plant diseases such as walnut blight, tomato and pepper bacterial spot, soft rot, cucumber, downy mildew, chrysanthemum bacterial wilt, and lilac bacterial blight could be controlled by antibiotics.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Approximately three and one-third million acres of native prairie are harvested annually in Nebraska for hay. In the four-year period 1948-1951, the State ranked first in wild hay production with an average yield of more than two and one-quarter million tons per year. This crop is an important natural resource in Nebraska's livestock industry. Studies were initiated in 1945 to determine the effects of time of cutting on the yield and feeding value of prairie hay in southeastern Nebraska. The studies were continued through the summer of 1952 to determine the effects of different cutting treatments on the vigor and …

The orchids known today make up one of the largest Angiospermous families in the world. Recent estimates place the number of genera at about 450 which estimates between 10,000 and 15,000 species (some authorities go as high as 20,000). They are without doubt one of the most highly specialized groups of green plants. Botanically the flowers are of more than passing interest for they deviate so distinctly from the norm of the Monocots. They are the possessors of a number of unique structures that are found in no other family of flowering plants.

Celery mosaic is a virus disease of major economic importance in Utah. In years of severe epiphytotics, it has been a limiting factor in celery production. In 1947 losses due to this disease were estimated to exceed 8 per cent of the total crop. This estimate does not include losses resulting from reduction in grade or from plants discarded in the packing sheds. The celery acreage in Utah dropped from a high of 950 acres in 1946 to 750 acres in 1947 and dropped again in 1948 to 420 acres. Leaders in the industry attributed this reduction in acreage, in …

Many books and articles have been written covering the flora of California. Few, however, have dealt specifically with those plants yielding drug principles used in the materia medica of the medical and pharmacy professions. Over one thousand different species of native and introduced drug plants are growing in the state. Many of these, it is true, have fallen into disuse, either because of lack of medicinal value, or substitutes have been found in the laboratories of the chemist.

Twenty-four native grasses that are the most important and most generally distributed in Nebraska are described and illustrated in this circular. Information concerning their distribution and economic value is given. Anyone interested in learning to identify the common native grasses should be able to do so by comparing plant specimens with the illustrations and descriptions herein presented. The work of identifying grasses may seem technical and limited only to botanists or those with similar training. Nearly anyone, however, can learn to identify many of the native grasses if willing to spend a little time and effort.

The following paper has to do with an investigation of the physical causes· which bring about opening and closing movements, periodic or otherwise, of certain flowers. With that end in view, seven different species of flowering plants have been experimented upon directly, a much larger number being simply observed with respect to the nature, time, etc., of their anthotropic movements. Rydberg (1860–1931) was born Sweden and emigrated to the United States in 1882, first to mining camps in upper Michigan and eventually to Wahoo, in Saunders County, Nebraska, where he taught mathematics from 1884 to 1893 at now defunct Luther Academy. In the summers of 1891-1893, 1895, and 1896 he was a field agent for the United States Department of Agriculture and collected plants in Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado, and specimens from those and other trips are in the Bessey Herbarium at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, which house what is now known as the Charles E. …
