New Species Of Aporomyces, Walter Rossi, Sergi Santamaria
Turkish Journal of Botany
Three new species of Aporomyces (Laboulbeniomycetes) parasitic on beetles from Ecuador are described. These are A. aequatorialis, parasitic on Byrrhinus near B. plenus (Limnichidae); A. benjaminii, parasitic on Plagiogramma sp. (Histeridae); and A. maximus, parasitic on Byrrhinus cf. maculatus. A key to all the species in the genus Aporomyces is given.

Globular phytoliths have been mainly assigned to palms, woody trees, and other monocotyledon families from tropical regions. The lack of detailed descriptions of this phytolith morphology and its correct assignments to particular groups could lead to erroneous interpretations of phytolith records. In order to improve paleobotanical interpretations of phytoliths records, we analyzed the phytolith content and described the quantitative and qualitative characters of globular phytoliths of Arecaceae, Bromeliaceae, Cannaceae, Marantaceae, Orchidaceae, Strelitziaceae, and Zingiberaceae species from Argentina. Turkish Truffles I: 18 New Records For Turkey, Azi̇z Türkoğlu, Michael Angelo Castellano, James Martin Trappe, Mehri̇can Yaratanakul Güngör

We report the first records of 18 truffle species in Turkey. Three belong to the Ascomycota: Elaphomyces leucocarpus, E. muricatus, and Genea sphaerica; and 15 to the Basidiomycota: Alpova corsicus, Gautieria otthii, G. retirugosa, G. trabutii, Hymenogaster citrinus, H. hessei, H. luteus, H. lycoperdineus, Hysterangium clathroides, H. epiroticum, H. fragile, H. nephriticum, Leucogaster tozzianus, Octaviania asterosperma, and Protoglossum aromaticum. We also report new localities within Turkey for Picoa juniperi, P. lefebvrei, Geopora cooperi, Terfezia arenaria, T. claveryi, Tuber aestivum, and T. nitidum in the Ascomycota; and Leucogaster nudus, Hymenogaster thwaitesii, H. vulgaris, and Melanogaster broomeanus in the Basidiomycota.

Based on study of the lectotype of Cephaloceraton gymnocarpum Gennari, megaspore ornamentation, and chromosome number analysis of specimens from different Mediterranean areas, it is shown here that Isoetes gymnocarpa (Gennari) A.Braun is a species endemic to Sardinia, Central Italy, Corsica, and Baleares, different from the Mediterranean I. histrix Bory and from the mainly CE Mediterranean I. sicula Tod. (= I. subinermis (Gennari) Cesca & Peruzzi).

A pot culture study was conducted to assess the ameliorative effect of silicon, Melia azadirachta leaf extract, and sugar beet root extract, each applied individually or in different combinations, on salinity-induced detrimental effects in pea (Pisum sativum L.). Salinity markedly inhibited the growth, various gas exchange attributes, total phenol contents, membrane stability index, and productivity. On the other hand, lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, H2O2 content, antioxidant activities, and leaf free proline and glycinebetaine contents were significantly enhanced by salinity. However, exogenously applied Si and phyto-extracts markedly alleviated the salinity-induced drastic effects on growth, gas exchange attributes, and productivity. Both phyto-extracts …

High temperature-induced changes in the photosystem II (PSII) activity of thylakoid membranes isolated from pea (Pisum sativum L. 'Ran') plants treated with low (10-8 M) and high (10-7 M) concentrations of fluridone were investigated. Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic oxygen evolution (measured by polarographic oxygen rate electrode) were used to estimate the effect of high temperature on the functional activity of PSII. Higher temperature treatments lead to stronger inhibition of the flash oxygen evolution than the primary photochemistry of PSII (Fv/Fm). Leaf indumentum and nutlet surface micromorphology of 13 taxa belonging to the Teucrium sect. Teucrium was studied with a scanning electron microscope. We observed 5 trichome types on the nutlets and 8 trichome types on the leaves. Branched trichomes were not found on the nutlets. Nutlet shapes of the taxa were elliptic, obovate, oblong, or rotund, and their surfaces were generally alveolate with different ornamentations. Some nutlets had longitudinal ridges. The taxa of the genus Euphorbia L. Have seeds that mature in schizocarp fruits, called cocci, with three or more cells, each of which explosively splits open into separate parts at maturity. The Euphorbia seeds have taxonomically useful characters. We studied 13 taxa of the genus Euphorbia distributed in Turkey-in-Europe, with a focus on the seed characters; for morphological observations we used a stereomicroscope, and for surface microstructure we used a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The northern slopes of the Central Great Caucasus of Georgia were covered by birch (Betula litwinowii) forests in the past, but forest degradation resulted in subalpine secondary meadows. The evolution and taxonomy of the core members of subtribe Vellinae (Brassicaceae), comprising Vella aspera, V. Bourgeana, and V. Pseudocytisus, is still poorly known. We reconstructed the evolutionary relationships among these taxa and other Vellinae and close Brassicaceae using nuclear ITS and plastid trnTF phylogenies, and analyzed the phenotypic traits that differentiate the infraspecific ranks of V. Pseudocytisus. Our phylogenetic analyses show: i) an early divergence of Succowia within the Brassiceae-Sisymbrieae sensu lato clade; ii) the nested positions of Vella bourgeana (syn. This paper describes a new species of Clavicipitaceae fungi belonging to the genus Metacordyceps G.H. Sung, J.M. Sung, Hywel-Jones and Spatafora, defined as Metacordyceps dhauladharensis sp. Nov., from India. The diagnostic features of this new species are stipitate stromata of brownish color and an elongated fertile head on a Hymenopteran host. The perithecium size of this species was measured as 152-257 × 65-72 µm, and the asci were measured as 30-48 µm in length and 2.5 µm in breadth. So far, a full, accessible list of algae from the water bodies of the South-Tajik Depression has not been available. Transferability of barley retrotransposon primers was investigated to analyze population structure in St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) based on inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism (IRAP). Seven long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposon primers derived from the barley genome were used to detect genetic polymorphism in eight Iranian populations and three cultivars (Helos, New Stem, and Topaz) of H. Perforatum based on IRAP analysis. Nine possible LTR primers/primer combinations successfully amplified fragments from the H. Perforatum genome. Genetic Diversity And Relationships Within And Among Onobrychis Species Using Molecular Markers, Mohammad Zarrabian, Mohammad Mahdi Majidi

Little is known about the taxonomic relationships of the genus Onobrychis (Fabaceae). To study inter- and intraspecific variations and the relationships among the species, 102 accessions (33 species) of the genus Onobrychis were evaluated using 22 inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Almost all the species belonging to the section Onobrychis clustered together. A similar pattern was found with the species belonging to the section Hymenobrychis, while those of the section Lophobrychis did not cluster together. The results indicate that the section Lophobrychis has a comparatively derived organization that can be attributed to the differences in their taxonomic delimitation. Geographical pattern …

This study concerned the taxonomic revision of Astragalus L. Section Onobrychoidei DC in Turkey. The morphological, cytological, and phenological characteristics of 29 species in this section are discussed. Moreover, 11 names at specific levels are reduced to synonymy: Astragalus eskishehiricus, A. Hololeucoides, A. Sakaryaensis, A. Phanothrix, A. Canescens, A. Robertianus, A. Rausianus, A. Tunceliensis, A. Pseudovegetus, A. Bingoellensis, and A. Bithynicus. The conservation statuses based on the IUCN Red List categories are mentioned for endemic taxa.

The subtribe Asterinae (Astereae, Asteraceae) includes highly variable, often polyploid species. Recent findings based on molecular methods led to revision of its volume. However, most of these studies lacked species from Eurasia, where a lot of previous taxonomic treatments of the subtribe exist. In this study we used molecular phylogenetics methods with internal transcribed spacer (ITS) as a marker to resolve evolutionary relations between representatives of the subtribe Asterinae from Siberia, Kazakhstan, and the European part of Russia. Russula kanadii (Russulaceae, Basidiomycota) is described as a new species from West Bengal, India, and is assigned to the subgenus Heterophyllidia, section Heterophyllae, and subsection Virescentinae. A comprehensive description, photographs, and comparisons with morphologically similar and phylogenetically related species are provided. Inferences of its phylogenetic relationships within the genus are provided based on the sequence of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region.

This study was conducted on specimens of macrofungi collected from Isparta Province between 2005 and 2008; in addition, Trichophaea woolhopeia (Cooke and W. Phillips) Boud. İs given as a new record from Muğla Province. After fieldwork and laboratory studies, 129 taxa belonging to 36 families and 2 divisions were identified from Isparta Province. Five of them, Cortinarius olidus J.E. Lange, Cystoderma jasonis (Cooke and Massee) Harmaja, Echinoderma echinaceum (J.E. And Melot, Melanogaster variegatus (Vittad.) Tul. And C. Tul., Paxillus ammoniavirescens Contu and Dessì, and Paxillus cuprinus P. Jargeat, H. Gryta, J.P. Chaumeton and A. Vizzini were reported for the first time for the Turkish mycota from Trabzon. Plant species, possible mycorrhizal relationships, and superficial morphologic structures were noted and photos were taken in situ in the collection area. Under stress conditions, Pro acts as an excellent compatible solute in the plant system, participating in the alleviation of stress sensitivity. Among grain legumes, peas (Pisum sativum L.) are highly sensitive to salt stress. Acclimatization of plants to such conditions is mandatory. We provide improved salt stress tolerance response of transgenic pea plants overexpressing the Na+/H+ gene from Arabidopsis thaliana and a positive association with salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). In addition to salt stress tolerance and phosphate solubilization, the selected rhizobacterial isolates were identified for indole acetic acid and proline production ability. Increasing the yield per unit area depends on identification and breeding of species resistant to different ecological conditions. In this regard, we aimed to evaluate mRNA levels of the PvLEA3 gene and lipid peroxidation levels in 7 different bean varieties subjected to NaCl and PEG stresses. In the present study, to determine the effects of β-estradiol on the ability of plants to tolerate lead toxicity, β-estradiol (10 μM) and lead (1.75 mM), singly or in combination, were exogenously applied to wheat seeds. Although lead resulted in a marked increase in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, guaiacol peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase (but not catalase), as well as an increase in the level of antioxidant compounds such as ascorbic acid and glutathione, this was insufficient to ameliorate the lead-induced oxidative injury or the superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde levels. An experiment was conducted during the 2013 monsoon season to screen 35 wild rice accessions against the BX043 strain of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae and identify the presence of bacterial blight resistance genes Xa21, xa13, xa5, Xa4, and Xa2. Among the accessions the area under the disease progress curve ranged from 174.88 (NKSWR-65) to 680.54 (NKSWR-34) compared with resistant controls RP bio-226 (93.92), CRMAS 2231-37 (097.28), CRMAS 2232-71 (098.58), and Tetep (178.62) and susceptible control PB-1 (1065.56).
