Macrofungi And Their Distribution In Karaman Province, Turkey, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Doğan, Celaleddi̇n Öztürk

Herein, macrofungi specimens that were collected from different locations in Karaman province, Turkey between 1999 and 2001 are reported. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 202 taxa belonging to 2 classes and 41 families were identified. Of them, 11 taxa belonged to Ascomycetes and 191 to Basidiomycetes. The most common families were Tricholomataceae, with 36 species; Bolbitiaceae, with 16 species; Agaricaceae and Cortinariaceae, with 15 species each; Coprinaceae, with 13 species; and Hymenochaetaceae, with 12 species.

Subalpine And Alpine Flora Of Altındere Valley (Maçka, Trabzon), Seyran Palabaş Uzun, Rahi̇m Anşi̇n

Turkish Journal of Botany

The subalpine and alpine flora of Altındere Valley (Maçka, Trabzon) was investigated during 2000-2002. The study area is situated in the Colchis sector of the Euro-Siberian floristic area of the Holarctic region with regard to plant geography. In this area, 384 plant taxa belonging to 61 families and 190 genera were determined. The largest family is Asteraceae (39; 10%), and the second largest is Rosaceae (35; 9%). The rates of the taxa belonging to certain phytogeographical regions are as follows: 50.27% Euro-Siberian, 5.99% Irano-Turanian and 1.04% Mediterranean. Ferula Parva Freyn & Bornm. (Apiaceae): A Contribution To An Enigmatic Species From Turkey, Mehmet Sağiroğlu, Hayri̇ Duman

Ferula parva Freyn & Bornm. was first collected from Central Anatolia (Turkey B5 Kayseri-Yozgat in declivibus apricis inter Kayseri et Yozgat, 1890) by Bornmüller. No specimens belonging to this species have been collected since the type and Andrasovszky specimens. When the Flora of Turkey was being prepared, Dr. H. Peşmen considered this species imperfectly known; therefore, it was not included in the keys. In the present paper, diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. In addition, its ecology, conservation status, SEM photographs of the surface of mericarps, and chromosome numbers are presented.

A list of 89 lichen taxa is reported from the provinces of Afyonkarahisar and Isparta. Fifteen taxa from Afyonkarahisar and 38 from Isparta are new records for these provinces.

Red Tide Observations Along The Eastern Black Sea Coast Of Turkey, Ali̇ Muzaffer Feyzi̇oğlu, Hamdi̇ Öğüt

To determine the occurrence of dominant phytoplanktonic species causing red tides along the eastern Black Sea (Trabzon) coast of Turkey, multiple samples were collected periodically between 1991 and 2001. Red tide events were observed only during the periods between February and July. Six phytoplanktonic species causing 5 red tide events detected were Diplopsalis lenticula, Euglena acusformis, Eutreptia lanowii, Pyramimonas orientalis, Scrippsiella trochoidea, and Gymnodinium sanguineum. Numeric density of species during the red tide events ranged between 0.97 x 10^6 and 356 x 10^6 cells l^{-1}. Some macrofungi specimens were collected from Gümüşhane province between 2001 and 2003. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 105 taxa belonging to 2 classes and 24 families were identified. These taxa are presented in a list. Of the 105 taxa, 14 are new records for the mycoflora of Turkey.

Aspergillus crustosus Raper & Fennell, Eupenicillium egyptiacum (J.F.H.Beyma) Stolk & D.B.Scott, Paecilomyces ramosus Samson & H.C.Evans, and Penicillium novae-zeelandiae J.F.H.Beyma were examined for their colonial and morphological properties via visual, light and scanning electron microscopy. These species isolated from soil in different regions of Eskişehir are recorded for the first time in Turkey.

The silicoflagellate species Dictyocha antarctica Lohmann, Dictyocha crux Ehrenb. and the diatom species Nitzschia rectilonga Takano are reported for the first time from the coastal waters of the north-eastern Sea of Marmara (lat. 40º 45.80' N - 40º 58.00' N, long. 28º 36.00' E - 29º 13.60' E) and also from the coastal waters of Turkey. Descriptions of these species are given in this paper.

Microfungi Isolated From Plants In Kahramanmaraş Province, Turkey, Zeli̇ha Bahçeci̇oğlu, Şanli Kabaktepe, Bayram Yildiz

Herein, 146 microfungi species and their hosts recorded in Kahramanmaraş province are given with their localities. The research was carried out between 2000 and 2004. Approximately 1821 vascular plant specimens infected and uninfected with microfungi were collected from the area. In total, 146 microfungi species were identified on the collected host specimens. These species belong to 36 genera and 17 families; 43 species belong to Ascomycota, 94 to Basidiomycota, 1 to Oomycota, and 8 to Mitosporic Fungi (Deuteromycota). Seventy-three taxa belonging to 27 genera are reported from Şirvan Mountain (Kayseri). All of these taxa are new records for the study area. Of these, 31 taxa are reported for the first time from the province of Kayseri, and 3 taxa, Caloplaca epiphyta Lynge, Lecanora hagenii (Ach.) Ach. var. fallax Hepp and Sarcogyne regularis Körb. var. platycarpoides (Anzi) N.S.Golubk., are new records for Turkey.

Rice production in Arkansas is one of the top three crop commodities in terms of cash receipts. Researchers and farmers report that nitrogen (N) needs to be managed according to a variety of factors with two important ones being soil and fertilizer type. The objectives of this experiment were to determine: 1) the degree to which floodwater-incorporated N applied as urea or as ammonium sulfate infiltrates intact cores (7.2-cm dia., 10-cm depth) containing DeWitt silt-loam soil, and 2) the distribution of N during 12 h of ponding. Transposable elements are DNA sequences that are able to move from place to place in the genome, and in some cases, make copies of themselves and reinsert back into the genome. Transposable elements are divided into three classes based on their method of transposition. Class I elements transpose by an RNA intermediate, and these include L TR (long terminal repeat) and non-L TR retrotransposons. Class II elements relocate in the genome without duplication. Interestingly, class III elements entirely lack genes and rely on products of other elements for transposition. Transposable elements are no longer considered unusual or unique components of …

Alfalfa stems, reed canarygrass, and switchgrass; perennial herbaceous species that have potential as biomass energy crops in temperate regions; were evaluated for their bioconversion potential as energy crops. Each forage species was harvested at two or three maturity stages and analyzed for carbohydrates, lignin, protein, lipid, organic acids, and mineral composition. The biomass samples were also evaluated for sugar yields following pretreatment with dilute sulfuric followed by enzymatic saccharification using a commercial cellulase preparation. Here, we describe two members of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) Yellow Stripe-Like (YSL) family, AtYSL1 and AtYSL3. The YSL1 and YSL3 proteins are members of the oligopeptide transporter family and are predicted to be integral membrane proteins. YSL1 and YSL3 are similar to the maize (Zea mays) YS1 phytosiderophore transporter (ZmYS1) and the AtYSL2 iron (Fe)-nicotianamine transporter, and are predicted to transport metal-nicotianamine complexes into cells. The South Fork Native Plant Preserve, a property owned and managed by the Gates Rogers Foundation, Inc., is located along the South Fork of the Little Red River (now Greers Ferry Lake) in Van Buren County, Arkansas. We conducted a floristic inventor/ of a 61.3 ha study area consisting of the preserve, adjacent lakefront property owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and a riparian corridor on neighboring land from February through November 2005. An interesting chasmophytic Teucrium specimen was collected from Siirt, SE Turkey. It was identified according to the Flora of Turkey as T. paederotoides but with some doubt about certain characters. It was identified as T. chasmophyticum without any doubt from Flora Iranica. Because of some indistinct points between these 2 taxa, the recently described taxon was re-evaluated. The type specimen of the taxon was examined at W herbarium and its revised description is given here. A photograph of the type specimen and the Turkish material taken from the field is supplied along with a map.

Net Planktonic Diatom (Bacillariophyceae) Composition Of Lake Abant (Bolu), Abuzer Çelekli̇, Okan Külköylüoğlu

The diatom flora of Lake Abant was studied monthly for 2 years (June 2003-June 2005) from 3 littoral and 2 vertical stations. A total of 123 diatom taxa were identified. Some species (Asterionella formosa Hassall, Cymbella silesiaca Bleisch, C. cistula Kirchner, Fragilaria biceps (Kützing) Lange-Bertalot, F. dilata (Brebisson) Lange-Bertalot, Navicula radiosa Kützing, and Rhopalodia gibba Müller) showed frequent occurrence in each month at all stations. Numbers of diatoms were increased in certain months in autumn, i.e. November (83 taxa) and December (68 taxa) 2003, and August (65 taxa) and September (76 taxa) 2004.

An efficient and reproducible plant regeneration system was developed from cells or tissues of agronomically important Indian sorghum genotypes including 2 commercial cultivars (NSH27 & K8) of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. Callus induction and plant regeneration were achieved on transverse thin cell layers (tTCL) of roots from aseptically germinated 7-day-old seedlings. Callus response depended on the genotype, the concentrations and composition of growth substances and number of in vitro regeneration cycles undergone by the donor plant. A comparative ultrastructural study of Araceae pollen walls was conducted for the first time. The results are based mainly on investigations by transmission electron microscopy of 101 species in 70 genera (out of a total of 105 genera), while pollen of 83 genera with 219 species were studied by scanning electron microscopy, generally without acetolysis. Special attention was given to Lemnaceae (including Limnobiophyllum) considered to be closely related to Araceae (especially to Pistia). The diverse, aquatic Hydrocharitaceae have defied stable classification for nearly two centuries. Anatomical and morphological convergence characterize many aquatic plants and undoubtedly have hindered the ability of researchers to ascertain accurately those features representing reliable phylogenetic markers within Hydrocharitaceae. Most prior classifications of the family have emphasized few characters to define major taxonomic subdivisions (i.e., they were highly artificial). Palms lack secondary growth so their primary vascular system is long-lived and must be minimally vulnerable to dysfunction. For water movement, the axial xylem must be well defended against cavitation. Climbing palms can be very long and represent a maximum solution to transport problems. How is this demonstrated in their anatomy? This article contrasts stem vascular anatomy in a canelike "tree palm" (Rhapis excelsa) with that in the American climbing palm Desmoncus and the Old World rattan genus Calamus. Zingiberales are a primarily tropical lineage of monocots. The current pantropical distribution of the order suggests an historical Gondwanan distribution, however the evolutionary history of the group has never been analyzed in a temporal context to test if the order is old enough to attribute its current distribution to vicariance mediated by the break-up of the supercontinent. A list of 75 lichen taxa is reported from Gürgendağı Mountain located to the north of Kazdağı (Ida Mountain), in Çanakkale province. Among the identified taxa, 41 taxa are epiphytic, 26 saxicolous and 8 terricolous. All of the taxa are new records for the area. Nineteen taxa are new for the province.
