The Effectiveness Of The Nitrate Ion Selective Electrode As A Qualitative Method For Low Levels Of Nitrate, Linda Blaine Aug 1973

The Effectiveness Of The Nitrate Ion Selective Electrode As A Qualitative Method For Low Levels Of Nitrate, Linda Blaine

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The nitrate ion specific electrode has been used to measure nitrate concentration in plant tissue. Nitrate concentration, as nitrate ion activity, can be read rather simply in an aqueous extract of the plant tissue in somewhat the sane manner as a pH measurement would be taken, In contract to more time consuming chemical methods.

A previous study of nitrate concentrations in barley treated with the growth retardant chemical, B-Nine (succinic acid 2, 2 dimethylhydrazide), had been carried out by the colorimetric method of Wooley, Hicks and Hageman. The study indicated lower nitrate concentrations in treated plants, as compared with untreated …

Effects Of A Nuclear Detonation On Arthropods At The Nevada Test Site, Dorald M. Allred Jul 1973

Effects Of A Nuclear Detonation On Arthropods At The Nevada Test Site, Dorald M. Allred

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Fifty-three arthropod species were studied in an area affected by an underground nuclear detonation. These were represented by 10 species of ants, 17 beetles, 5 orthopterans, 4 scorpions, 6 solpugids, and 11 spiders (Table 16). Relative populations were determined prior to the detonation and at three periods after the detonation–(1) one and two months after (August and September 1962), (2) 11 months after (June 1963), and (3) 13 months after (August 1963). One and two months after the detonation, the number of species was reduced from the expected by 48 percent, by 52 percent after 11 months, and by 66 …

Community Structure And Production In A Marsh On The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Virginia, Michael Bassett Robblee Jul 1973

Community Structure And Production In A Marsh On The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Virginia, Michael Bassett Robblee

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Four different plant communities occur on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Virginia, 1. Spartina alterniflora, 2. Distichlis spicata - Spartina patens - Juncus roemerianus, J. Baccharis halimifolia - Iva frutescens and 4. Spartina cynosuroides. The cordgrasses s. alterniflora and S. cynosuroides dominate the marsh.

Based-on standing crop estimates S. alterniflora produced 1218.6 grams dry wt/m2 and S.cynosuroides 1681.3 grams dry wt/m2, which is much higher than generally assumed for Virginia marshes. Evidence for the presence of two crops of S. alterniflora on the marsh during the growing season is-presented.

Two animal associations, composed …
