Laboulbeniales On Semiaquatic Hemiptera. Iii. Rhizopodomyces, Richard K. Benjamin

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Thaxter's original description of Rhizopodomyces is emended to reflect new information gained from a study of not only the type species, R. merragatae, but also of six additional species described as new, R. basifurcatus, R. californicus, R. erectus , R. geniculatus, R. mexicanus, and R. polhemusii. All of the species have been found on semiaquatic bugs of the family Hebridae (Hemiptera). The female thallus of Rhizopodomyces spp. consists of a simple, two-celled receptacle, the suprabasal cell bearing a one-celled primary appendage and giving rise usually to a single, longstalked perithecium. The male thallus initially consists of …

Wood Anatomy Of Bruniaceae: Correlations With Ecology, Phylogeny, Organography, Sherwin Carlquist

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Wood of Bruniaceae is very primitive according to widelyaccepted criteria. Vessels are relatively long, with scalariform perforation plates having numerous bars, fully or vestigially bordered. Many aberrations in disposition of bars and perforations in perforation plates are present, and no species has exclusively normal perforation plates. Lateral wall pitting of vessels, both intervascular and between vessels and rays, is scalariform to opposite. Vessels are solitary or nearly so, angular to round in transection. Helical thickenings are present in vessels of only a single species. All imperforate elements are thick-walled tracheids, some with gelatinous walls. Tracheids are only slightly longer (in …

Gamsiella, A New Subgenus Of Mortierella (Mucorales: Mortierellaceae), R. K. Benjamin Jan 1978

Gamsiella, A New Subgenus Of Mortierella (Mucorales: Mortierellaceae), R. K. Benjamin

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Mortierella multidivaricata is described and placed in a new subgenus, Gamsiella, of M ortierella. It is distinguished from species of subgenus M ortierella in having repeatedly divaricately branched sporangiophores. Large numbers of sporangiola develop simultaneously on slender, attenuate pedicels arising from the ultimate branches of the sporangiophore. The sporangiole of M. multidivaricata forms two subglobose, finely sculpttued sporangiospores. Mostly terminal, globose, spiny chlamydospores are formed in slender, secondary, intra- or extrahyphal hyphae that arise from living segments of the ageing aerial mycelium. Classification of the Mortierellaceae is summarized briefly. The type and only known strain of M. multidivaricata originated from …

The Formative Years, Lee W. Lenz

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Letters exchanged between Susanna Bixby Bryant, the founder of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, and several leading southern California botanists and horticulturalists (especially Ernest Braunton, Willis Linn Jepson, and Theodore Payne) in 1925–1926 document her steps toward creating a botanical garden devoted to the native California flora.

In The Beginning, Lee W. Lenz

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

This article traces the early history of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, California, starting ca. 1867 with the Portolà Expedition. The expedition was the first to record the site where the botanic garden later came to be located, in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County. Successive changes in land ownership eventually led to the Bixby family purchasing the land in 1875. Susanna Bixby Bryant, the founder of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, acquired the land in 1925.

The Botanic Garden Moves, Lee W. Lenz Jan 1977

The Botanic Garden Moves, Lee W. Lenz

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

In 1950, the decision was taken to relocate Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden from its original site—Mrs. Susanna Bixby Bryant's ranch in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County—to today's Claremont location in eastern Los Angeles County. The move reflected a wish to align the founder's mandate to "foster scientific research and public welfare" by seeking affiliation with the Claremont Colleges. The change enabled it to train graduate students in botany and related fields and draw more visitors to a garden devoted to native California plants. Accounts describe how the new site was adapted to its purpose, including the construction of …

The Botanic Garden—A Reality, Lee W. Lenz Jan 1977

The Botanic Garden—A Reality, Lee W. Lenz

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The year 1927 marks the beginning of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden at its original location in Santa Ana Canyon, northeastern Orange County, California. Letters exchanged between Susanna Bixby Bryant, the botanic garden founder, and various botanists and horticulturalists trace her efforts to obtain seed and planting stock, herbarium specimens, and books and periodicals for her library. Much discussion is devoted to the question of how to fill the position of Scientific Director.

An Independent Institution, Lee W. Lenz Jan 1977

An Independent Institution, Lee W. Lenz

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Covering the period from approximately 1927 to 1947, this article deals with the management and running of the fledgling Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, featuring the publication of botanical and horticultural papers, the founding of the journal El Aliso, and detailed accounts of field work devoted to the collection of plants for the living collection and herbarium. This period of time also saw several challenges, notably serious damage from a wildfire in 1943, wartime constraints, and the death of the founder and managing director of the garden, Susanna Bixby Bryant.
