A Taxonomic & Physiographic Survey Of Scirpus In Kentucky With Problem Species Complex Analysis, Sally Arnold
A Taxonomic & Physiographic Survey Of Scirpus In Kentucky With Problem Species Complex Analysis, Sally Arnold
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The genus Scirpus was analyzed according to species occurrence and physiographic distribution in the State of Kentucky. The morphology of three taxonomic problem complexes, Scirpus atrovirens-georgianus, Scirpus validus-acutus, and Scirpus cyperinus-eriophorum-pelius-pedicellatus was evaluated to determine whether or not their components are distinct among the Kentucky specimens. Remaining taxa were likewise evaluated and identified. A key to Scirpus in Kentucky and a taxonomic treatment are presented.
Ecotypic Differentiation In Ohio & Mississippi Populations Of Acer Negundo L., Anthony Greco
Ecotypic Differentiation In Ohio & Mississippi Populations Of Acer Negundo L., Anthony Greco
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Laboratory investigations of Acer negundo populations from two widely separated habitats revealed distinct patterns of ecotypic differentiation in budbursting, leaf fall, and chlorophyll levels. Second year seedlings of Mississippi seed origin had complete leaf emergence before any evidence of budbursting in the Ohio progeny of similar age. Leaf fall patterns showed a clear difference between the two populations with Ohio plants dropping their leaves 2.5 weeks prior to complete defoliation in the Mississippi progeny. Significant differences in chlorophyll levels were demonstrated with the more northern (higher latitude) Ohio population showing consistently greater amounts of chlorophyll per gram dry weight than …
Forest Composition Of Rock Creek Gorge A Virgin Forest In Laurel County, Kentucky, Margaret Ringland
Forest Composition Of Rock Creek Gorge A Virgin Forest In Laurel County, Kentucky, Margaret Ringland
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Rock Creek Gorge in Rock Creek Natural Landmark in Laurel County, Kentucky is a deep narrow gorge dominated by Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr., Oxydendrum arboreum (L.) DC., Betula lenta L. and Liriodendron tulipifera L. Rhododendron maximum L., dominating the understory, is also an important constituent of the gorge. An analysis of the forest composition showed the community to be stable and climax. The dominant species were found in sapling and seedling size classes. The vegetation varied slightly between the east facing and west facing slopes. Hemlock did not attain as high an importance value on the west facing slope, although …
Structure & Composition Of A Climax Forest System In Boone County, Kentucky, Michael Held
Structure & Composition Of A Climax Forest System In Boone County, Kentucky, Michael Held
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The structure and composition of a 52 hectare mature mesic hardwood forest in Boone County, Kentucky was studied during 1973-74. Acer saccharum was the dominant tree species of the entire forest, with Fraxinus americana as the subdominant. In the understory vegetation, Acer and Fraxinus were among the dominant genera, thus this forest system can be described as being at the climax stage of development. A previously cleared area in the forest was also analyzed. It was found that the dominant tree species of the canopy were also dominant in the genera of the understory in the disturbed area, indicating a …

The Effectiveness Of The Nitrate Ion Selective Electrode As A Qualitative Method For Low Levels Of Nitrate, Linda Blaine
The Effectiveness Of The Nitrate Ion Selective Electrode As A Qualitative Method For Low Levels Of Nitrate, Linda Blaine
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The nitrate ion specific electrode has been used to measure nitrate concentration in plant tissue. Nitrate concentration, as nitrate ion activity, can be read rather simply in an aqueous extract of the plant tissue in somewhat the sane manner as a pH measurement would be taken, In contract to more time consuming chemical methods.
A previous study of nitrate concentrations in barley treated with the growth retardant chemical, B-Nine (succinic acid 2, 2 dimethylhydrazide), had been carried out by the colorimetric method of Wooley, Hicks and Hageman. The study indicated lower nitrate concentrations in treated plants, as compared with untreated …
Seasonal Variation Of The Pigment Content Of Acer Saccharum & Tilia Americana, James Major
Seasonal Variation Of The Pigment Content Of Acer Saccharum & Tilia Americana, James Major
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Leaves of the sugar maple and the American linden were selected. Since it was impossible to control environmental factors in any way, trees growing in close proximity were used. A sugar maple and an American linden growing near the entrance to the circular drive between Ogden Hall and Snell Hall on the campus of Western Kentucky State Teachers College, Bowling Green, Kentucky, fulfilled the above conditions.
The Phaenogams Of Western Kentucky University State Teachers College, Gertrude Raymond
The Phaenogams Of Western Kentucky University State Teachers College, Gertrude Raymond
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The campus of Western Kentucky State Teachers College was laid out in 1910 by Mr. Henry Wright, landscape architect, with the view of planting ornamental shrubs and woody and herbaceous plants indigenous to Kentucky. In more recent years the gardens on the grounds of the Kentucky Building have been planted with many species of Kentucky plants.
This study was undertaken for the purpose of making a scientific classification of the flowering plants on the campus of Western Kentucky State Teachers College.
The Relation Of The Native Forest Cover To The Physical And Chemical Nature Of The Soils Of The Mammoth Cave National Park Area, Sheppard Walker
The Relation Of The Native Forest Cover To The Physical And Chemical Nature Of The Soils Of The Mammoth Cave National Park Area, Sheppard Walker
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining the relation existing between the native forest cover and the chemical and physical properties of the soils of the Mammoth Cave National Park area. The study was suggested by certain references in the literature to a correlation existing between forest cover and the geological, chemical and physical nature of soils of this area. The recent attempt at reforestation in the Mammoth Cave National Park area renders such a study timely, and it is believed that the results reported in this paper will materially aid the Mammoth Cave National Park Commission and …
