The genus Rhus L. ( Anacardiacece) has some 150 species all over the world and is represented by Rhus coriaria L. in Turkey. In this study, the anatomy of the cortex of this species was investigated. Anatomical study of the branch cortex revealed taht large secretory canals containing essential oil occur in one row around the cortex. These canals are supported by a group of sclerenchyma cells. These characteristic elements were inllustrated.

Mibora minima (L.) Desv. ( Gramineae) and Trifolium ornithopodioides (L.) Sm. ( Leguminosae) are added new to the Turkish flora from localities in Turkish Thrace. Their diagnostic characters are briefly described and their ecology and conservation discussed.

The effects of Polystimuline K (PS-K), as a cytokinin analogue, on delayed light component state (DF), intermittent fluorescence (IF) and chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratio was investigated in the leaves of different genotypes of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) under salt stress (155 mM Na Cl) for different periods of time. It was shown that in the early perioid of salt stress, DF and IF amplitudes are decreased, which is indicative of a Photosystem II (PS II) activity decrease. Flora Of The Area Between Amasya Castleand The Villages Of Vermis And Yuvacik, Arzu Cansaran, Mustafa Aydoğdu

This study covers the flora of the area between Amasya Castle and the villages of Vermis and Yuvacık. In 1994, 670 plant specimens were collected in the study area and examined. At the end of the study, 75 families, 287 genera and 412 species were determined. The total number of taxa was found to be and 412 species were determined. The total number of taxa was found to be 420, 46 (10.95%) of which are endemic. The distribution rates of the specimens into phytogeographical regions are as follows: Irano-Turanian, 15.71%; Mediterranean, 9.52%; and Euro-Siberian, 7.38%.

A New Record For The Marine Algal Flora Of Turkey: Caulerpa Scalpelliformis (Brown Exturner) C. Agardh ( Caluerpaceae, Chlorophyceae), Ö. Osman Ertan, İsmail İ. Turna, Mario Cormaci

The first record of C. scalpelliformis (Brown ex Turner) C. Agardh from Antalya harbour (36°53'.1 N, 030°42'.2 E) is reported here. The species was found in the year 1995, in the period August-September, when seawater temperature reached 26.5 to 27°C. After this time, the species seemed to disappear, probably because of low winter temperatures. Thus, the occurrence of this species in Antalya harbour should be considered temporary, not as an indication of the expansion of the distribution area of this lessepsian species in the Mediterranean Sea.

A Study In The Seasonal Variation Of Phytoplankton Inhafik Lake (Sivas, Turkey), Sabri Kilinç

The seasonal variations in composition of the phytoplankton of Hafik lake was studied from April 1986to June 1987. Ba- cillariophyta, Chlorophyta, and Cyanophyta were the most abundant components of the phytoplankton community. Chrysophyta, Cryptophyta, Dinophyta, and Euglenophyta were found in low numbers. Diatoms showed an increase in spring but were scarce in summer and autumn. Cyclotella meneghiniana Kuetz. and Cyclotella ocellata Pant. were the most frequent species. Chlorophyta was the next most abundant group and showed greater numbers in spring than in autumn and summer. Chlamydonomonas, Oo- cytis, and Scenedesmus species were the main algae. The effects of kinetin, benzyladenine (BA), and gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) on abscisic acid (ABA) inhibition of seed germination and seedling growth of red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) and arbor vitae (Thuja orientalis L.) were studied. Some low-molecular-weight carbohydrates extracted with ethanol and water from the fruits of Laurocerasus officinalis Roem. ( Rosaceae), from two different regions in Trabzon, were analysed using gas chromatography. In one population, the analysis in the ethanol extraction showed the occurence of fructose, glucose, sorbitol and sucrose in concentrations (w/w) of 25.20; 23.00; 14.00 and 0.024 %, respectively. The same sugars, in the water extraction were found in concentrations (w/w) of 24.62; 25.59; 7.43 and 0.114 %, respectively. Nonvolatile Acid Composition During Fruit Development Ofdiospyros Lotus L., F. Ahmet Ayaz, Asım Kadioğlu

Changes in nonvolatile acid contents during fruit development of Diospyros lotus L ( Ebenaceae) were studied. Suc-cinic, furmaric, malic, citric and azelaic acids were identified and quantified by gas chromatography. The quantities of all acids varied significantly during the fruit development. Malic and citric acids were generally predominant in all development stages. During havesting time (on day 331), fumaric acid was the most abundant acid in the fruits. Quantities of malic, succinic, fu-maric and citric acids (except azelaic acid) were found to be the highest in September (on day 271).

The pollen morphology of 157 species, representing 37 genera, of the subfamily Papilionoideae from Pakistan have been examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Papilionoideae is a eurypalynous subfamily. The pollen grains are generally free, radially symmetrical, isopolar, mostly tricolporate, rarely colpate or porate. The shape is commonly prolate to sub-prolate, or prolate-spherodial, less commonly to oblate-spheroidal or sub-oblate, often perprolate. The ora is commonly la-longate or circular, rarely lolongate. Colpal membrane is psilate to sub-psilate or granulated, often scabrate. The sexine is thicker than or as thick as the nexine. A reticulate tectum type is the most common. However, …

The seasonal variations in phytoplankton blooms in Suat Uğurlu Reservoir were studied between July 1992 and De-cember 1993. In certain months, the species Asterionella formosa Hassal, Cyclotella planctonica Brunthaler, Melosira granulata (Ehr.) Ralfs (Bacillariophyta); Pediastrum simplex Meyen, Pandorina morum Borry (Chlorophyta) and Ceratium hirundinella (O F. Müller) Schrank (Dinophyta) produced blooms in the lake. During the study period, the measured N/P ratio in the water varied from 10.3 mg/lt to 62.5. Phenotypic plasticity was investigated in Commelina communis L. ( Commelinaceae), which is a perennial herb native to temperate Asia (China) and widely naturalised in the central and eastern Black Sea regions were investiguted C. communis has a relatively high ecological tolerance with respect to climatic and soil factors. It was found that the shoot length, leaf width, number of branches, dead leaves and flowers, root:shoot ratio, total -flower- and root biomasses, flower and root ni-trogen and RE 1 and RE 2 varied significantly in among the three populations. Sporobolus fertilis (Steud.) W.D. Clayton (Gramineae) , Physalis pubescens L. (Solanaceae) and Ambrosia elatior L. (Compositae ) are added to the flora of Turkey following the collection in August 1995 of three specimens from Northeast Anatolia where well-established populations now exist. They are housed at the Herbarium of the Faculty of Pharmacy of İstanbul University (nos. 69298, 69309, 69357). Observations on the alien plants of the cited area are appended.

The relationship between loss of seed viability and the accumulation of chromosomal aberrations was investigated in both landraces and cultivars of the pea ( Pisum sativum L.). It was shown here, for the first time with pea landraces, that loss of seed viability is associated with an increase in the frequency of chromosomal abberrations, and that even small losses of viability result in some chromosomal damage in the seeds of pea landraces as well as in the seeds of pea cultivars. A. method is described for plant regeneration from unfertilized ovaries isolated from a diploid male sterile sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L.) breeding line that was developed at the Sugar Institute, Ankara, Turkey. Ovary explants were cultured on Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium containing 2.0 mg/l benzylaminopurine (BAP). Two treatments were tested by incubating all of the explants in darkness for 15 days, and then transferring one half to light and keeping the other half in darkness throughout the culture. Agrobacterium tumefaciens (Smith& Townsend) Conn is commonly used in gene transfer to plants. The effectiveness of bacterial strains and suitable plant genotypes facilitate this process. In this study, 8 lentil cultivars grown in Turkey were assessed for their susceptibility to two wild-type A. tumefaciens strains, A281 and A136NC. Both strains induced tumors in lentil cultivars, while differing in the ability to form tumors. Although most of the cultivars had some degree of susceptibility to A. tumefaciens infection, cultivars Yesil 21 and Pul 11 had higher frequencies of tumor formation in both strains than the other cultivars tested.

In this study, the vegetation mosaic is determined by aerial photography and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques around the first center of tourism development in the Uludağ Mountain. The cover of plant communities and vegetation types is calculated in both absolute values (ha) and as percentage (%) of the total research area. Dwarf shrub communities ( Vaccinium myrtillus Juniperus communis, Juniperus communis and Astragalus angustifoliis comm.) are dominant with a cover of 53%. This study covers the investigation of the soil-plant relations of Vitex agnus-castus L. (Verbenaceae), a typical element of Mediteranean macchia vegetation. Soils collected from 38 different localitis in West Anatolia were analysed together with the V. agnus-castus plants from the same localities. This plant was observed to generally prefer loamy-textured, neutral and slightly alka-line soils, poor in calcium carbonate, containing varying amounts of organic matter, being rich or very rich in nitrogen, rich in phos-phorus and deficient in potassium. In this study the possibilities of in vitro vegatitve propagation of almond ( Amygdalus communis L.) cv. Texas and cv. Nonpareil by shoot-tip culture were investigated. Different levels of sucrose, agar and pH were tested and shoot proliferation, shoot development and growth were observed during three successive stages, namely initiation, transplantation and multiplication. During the initiation stage, proliferation was achieved only with 5 and 6% sucrose and the best explant development occured with 0.5% agar and pH 5.5. With the aim of developing an efficient plant regeneration system from cells or tissues of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.), we compared several regeneration protocols using different explant types and hormonal combinations. Somatic embryogenesis could be induced on cotyledon explants, especially from the basal (proximal) portion of the cotyledons, but genotypic vairation appeared to be the most critical factor for both somatic embryo and root production. Such a variation was more prominent when 10 different sunflower cultivars were compared for shoot production from shoot-tip explants. This investigation covers studies undertaken on the liverworts of the Altındere Valley National Park, including the historical Sumela Meryemana Monastery located in the town of Maçka, province of Trabzon. As a result, 33 species belonging to 16 families of the class Marchantiopsida (Hepaticae) of the division Bryophyta have been identified. Of these, Porella arboris-vitae (With.) Grolle, P. cordaeana (Hüb.) Moore, P. obtusata (Tayl.) Trev. and Lejeunea lamacerina (Steph.) Schiffn. are reported for the first time from the A4 square of Turkey.

This study comprises new chorological data of 54 Bulgarian vascular plants. The occurrence of Glyceria nemoralis (Uechtr.) Uechtr. & Koern. in Bulgaria is confirmed. Thirty-four taxa are new for the Bulgarian region of Mt. Strandzha. The occurrence of 20 species in the Bulgarian region of Mt. Strandzha is confirmed. In addition, the distribution of Knautia degenii Borbás ex Form. in Bulgaria is briefly discussed.
