A Study On The Epiphytic Algae Of The Nilüfer Stream (Bursa), Şükran Dere, Di̇dem Karacaoğlu, Nurhayat Dalkiran

In our study, water samples were taken monthly between August 1997 and June 1998 from six selected stations in the region, from the source of the Nilüfer stream to the point where it joins the Marmara Sea. Temperature (Cº), pH, total dissolved substance (TDS), conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) values of the samples were measured. The epiphytic algal flora, and the population density and the abundance degree of species were determined. This investigation was carried out between 1994 and 1995 in order to determine the flora of Upper Ceyhan Valley. The research area is situated in the province of Kahramanmaraş and within C6 of the grid system. In the area, 412 taxa belonging to 68 families and 262 genera were determined. Twenty-eight (6.7%) taxa are endemics for Turkey. In the distribution of the taxa according to the floristic regions, Mediterranean elements with a rate of 23.5% are the most common. Irano-Turanian elements with a rate of 17.2% and Euro-Siberian elements with a rate of 3.4% were found. The families which have …

Macrofungi were collected during field trips in the Ağrı district between 1997 and 2000. At the end of field and laboratory studies, 45 taxa belonging to 3 classes and 18 families were identified. Three of these, Pluteus ephebeus (Fr.:Fr.) Gill. (Pluteaceae), Coprinus auricomus Pat. (Coprinaceae) and Inocybe tigrina Heim. (Cortinariaceae), are new records for the mycoflora of Turkey.

Flora Of Tuzaklı, Otluk, Gidefi Mountains And Surroundings (Akseki), Ahmet Duran

The natural and cultivated plants of Tuzaklı, Otluk, Gidefi mountains and their surroundings were studied between 1994 and 1997; 2486 herbarium specimens belonging to 1023 taxa, 484 genera and 98 families were collected and identified from the areas. Sixty-one taxa are cultivated and the rest are native plants. The phytogeographic elements are represented in the study area as follows: Mediterranean 360 (37.4%), Irano-Turanian 86 (8.9%) and Euro-Siberian 35 (3.6%). The phytogeographic regions of 481 (50%) taxa are either multi-regional or unknown. Phytogeographic regions are recommended for 12 taxa, of which phytogeographic regions have not been previously suggested. The life forms …

Comparison Of Soil Fungi Flora In Burnt And Unburnt Forest Soils In The Vicinity Of Kargıcak (Alanya, Turkey), Ayşe Di̇lek Azaz, Osman Pekel

Out of the 50 soil samples taken from burnt forest land in the vicinity of the village of Kargıcak in Alanya and from the adjacent normal forest soils by the Soil Dilution Plate Method 84 different species and 12 sterile microfungi taxa were obtained. Seventy-eight of them belong to Hyphomycetes, five to Mucorales and one to Coelomycetes. The richest taxa were Penicillium (34 species), Aspergillus (16 species) and Cladosporium (5 species). As a result of quantitative analysis, it was determined that there was average of 43,780 propagules of microfungi in a bulk of fresh burnt forest soil equivalent to 1 …

Nineteen new records of Turkish freshwater algae were determined in a study of the phytoplankton from Sarıyar dam reservoir. One of these species was from the Cyanobacteria, 14 were from the Chlorophyta, three were from the Euglenophyta and one was from the Heterokontophyta.

Palynological investigations have revealed that the deforestation of Central Anatolia started c. 4000 BP. At present, most of the land is cultivated and only small patches of woodland occur in remote mountain areas. These woodlands are dominated by deciduous oaks ( Quercus L. spp.) or locally by junipers ( Juniperus L. spp.). A pattern of scattered fruit trees, the so-called wild orchards, characterizes the cultivated fields. Another type of arboreal vegetation is found on isolated rock outcrops in the fields. Surveys of the vegetation types show that oaks are uncommon among the fields and on the rock outcrops. By contrast, …

Pollen Flora Of Pakistan - Xxviii: Resedaceae, Anjum Perveen, Mohammad Qaiser

The pollen morphology of 4 species belonging to the 3 genera of the family Resedaceae was investigated using a light microscope and scanning microscope. Pollen grains usually radially symmetrical, isopolar, sub-prolate, rarely prolates pheroidal, tricolpate or tricolporate. Tectum reticulate. However, apertural type and pollen shape are the most significant pollen characters for delimiting the genera. On the basis of apertural types 2 distinct pollen types are recognized, namely, I: Tricolpate-type and II: Tricolporate-type.

The most commonly used methods for dealing with heavy metal pollution are still extremely costly. Phytoremediation is the use of plants to extract, sequester and/or detoxify pollutants and is a new and powerful technique for environmental clean-up. Plants are ideal agents for soil and water remediation because of their unique genetic, biochemical and physiological properties. A Study On The Autecology Of Reseda Lutea L. (Resedaceae) Distributed In Western Anatolia, Yunus Doğan

The aim of this study was to determine the autecological characteristics of Reseda lutea L. (Resedaceae) distributed in Western Anatolia. The chemical and physical analysis was carried out on soil and plant samples collected from 54 different localities in Western Anatolia. The results show that the plant generally prefers sandy-loam and sandy-clayey-loam textural soils, with a slightly alkaline or medium alkaline pH. They prefer non-saline, calcareous soils which are poor in potassium and phosphorus, but the nitrogen content of the soils was found to vary greatly. The soil and plant analysis results were evaluated statistically and correlations were established.

Experiments with pea (Pisum sativum L.) cv. Marat) in a phytotron chamber showed that the process of nitrate assimilation in pea organs depends on temperature in the zone of the roots and on the phase of development of the plants. The potential of tissues of different organs for nitrate reduction was compared to the amount of nitrates which they accumalated. A decrease in nitrate reductase activity during certain phases of development is assumed to be related to the process of formation and functioning of nodules.

The use of short-term tests with E. gracilis Klebs in order to assess toxicity cannot be viewed as absolutely preferable. At least in the case with wastewater from the pulp and paper industry, 7 day-tests could lead to more explanatory and significant results.

The flora of Kelkit Valley was investigated between 1990 and 1993. In the vegetation period, a total of 2800 plant specimens were collected. At the end of the study, 1316 species and subspecies and 519 genera belonging to 105 families were established. Of these, 132 taxa are endemic to Turkey and the ratio is 10.03%. The rates of taxa which are included in certain phytogeographical regions are as follows: Irano-Turanian 14.75%, Euro-Siberian 12.69% and Mediterranean 11.40%.

The occurrence of lichens and air pollution in the city of İzmir were investigated according to VDI-Guideline 3799 Part 1. In all, 45 epiphytic lichen species were found in 1092 releves. Different distribution patterns discriminated in the study area were used to evaluate air quality. A predominant part of the city area is heavily polluted; this pollution decreases in green spaces and in the outer zone of the study area. The best air quality values were determined in the southern and western parts of the city zone. A value of 7.3 for the width of the air quality classes shows …

Insertion Of An Antimicrobial Gene Into Agrobacterium And Its Further Use In Transforming Tobacco, Ekrem Gürel

In the present work, we first describe the transfer of a novel gene, designated 5W, into the LBA4404 Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain using pPCV91 plasmid through a triparental mating system. The 5W gene was recently isolated from macadamia, a native nut tree species of Australia, and has been shown to have an antimicrobial effect against certain fungi in vitro. Secondly, this gene was tranferred into tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xhantii) using leaf explants to develop a system which could then be used for transferring this antimicrobial peptide into sunflower cultivars.

In the Ankara-Kızılcahamam Soğuksu National Park,116 taxa of bryophytes were identified by the authors. These belong to 20 families and 42 genera of bryophytes. Of these, 32 taxa are new for the A2 grid-square in the system adopted by Henderson.

The field studies have been carried out to determine the flora of Mount Musa between 1994-1996. Nearly, 1000 plant specimens were collected. After identification of these specimens, total flora has been determinated as 522 taxa at specific and subspecific ranks belonging to 287 genera and 87 families. The largest three families are Fabaceae (67 species), Asteraceae (55 species) and Lamiaceae (45 species). The largest genus is Trifolium L. (14 species) and the second is Vicia L. (11 species). Mount Kısır constitutes the study area; the northern and western parts are within the boundary of the Çıldır district (Ardahan), the southwestern part is within the boundary of Susuz and the eastern and southeastern parts are within the boundary of Arpacay (Kars). This place is the highest part of Northeastern Anatolia (3150 m) and lies within square A9. On Mount Kısır and in its environs, a continental climate prevails. The pollen morphology of eight species belonging to two genera, i.e., Boerhavia L., and Commicarpus Standley, of the family Nyctaginaceae, was studied by light microscope and scanning microscope. The pollen morphology of 14 species belonging to seven genera viz., Cadaba Forssk., Capparis L., Cleome L., Dipterygium Decaisne, Gynandropsis DC., Maerua Forssk., of the family Capparidaceae, was investigated using a light microscope and scanning microscope. The results confirm the eurypalynous nature of the family. However, palynology is significantly helpful at the specific level. Pollen grains usually radially symmetrical, isopolar, sub-prolate to prolate, generally tricolporate, often tetra-colporate. Tectum generally spinulose, or striate-rugulate, or rugulate-reticulate often sub-psilate.

The Effect Of Glycinebetaine On The Heat Stability Of Photosynthetic Reactions In Thylakoid Membranes, Yagut M. Allakhverdieva, Mahir D. Mamedov, Ralphreed A. Gasanov

Heat inactivation of various photosynthetic electron transport reactions were investigated in the presence/absence of glycinebetaine (betaine) in unstacked thylakoid membranes from spinach. The activity of Photosystem II (PS II) is more sensitive to heat than that of Cytochrome bf (cyt.bf) and Photosytem I (PS I) complexes. The data obtained clearly demonstrated the protection of PS II and PS I electron transfer by betaine under high temperatures. The phenomena observed are probably related to the stabilization of the higher-order structures of PS II and PS I by betaine.
