As a result of taxonomic investigations carried out in the Mut (Mersin) district, 9 species belonging to 2 families (Coprinaceae and Bolbitiaceae) are recorded for the first time for the macrofungi flora of Turkey. These species are Psathyrella badiophylla(Romagn.) Park.-Rhodes, P. bifrons (Berk.) Smith, P. cernua (Vahl: Fr.) G.Hirsch, P. murcida (Fr.) Kits van Wav., Agrocybe splendida Clç., Conocybe subpubescens P.D.Orton, C. fuscimarginata (Murr.) Sing., C. tenera (Schaeff.: Fr.) Fay. and Pholiotina aporos (Kits van Wav.) Clç.

The morphological, anatomical and micromorphological features of Saponaria kotschyi Boiss. have been studied on plants collected from Osmangazi University-Meşelik Campus, Eskişehir. S. kotschyi is an endemic species and a new record from Eskişehir. In general, the results obtained from morphological studies were consistent with the description given in the Flora of Turkey, except for the calyx, as the calyx of S. kotschyi flowers not only had glandular hairs but also eglandular hairs. The anatomical studies on cross-sections of the root, stem, leaves and surface sections of leaves were presented and compared with previous findings. This study was based on macrofungi specimens collected from Sinop province between 1998 and 2000. According to the field and laboratory work, 170 taxa belonging to 32 families have been identified and 32 of these taxa were added to Turkey's macromycota flora as new records.

A Taxonomic Study On The Phytoplankton Of Lake Uluabat (Bursa), Di̇dem Karacaoğlu, Şükran Dere, Nurhayat Dalkiran

The phytoplanktonic algal flora of Lake Uluabat was studied during July 1998- June 1999 by analysing samples taken each month from 5 sampling stations. Identified taxa (331) of the phytoplanktonic community are as follows: 152 Bacillariophyta, 89 Chlorophyta, 42 Cyanophyta, 31 Euglenophyta, 11 Dinophyta, 4 Cryptophyta and 2 Chrysophyta. Algal species which live in eutrophic water are dominant in the phytoplankton. Most of the species are characterised by their widespread presence, although it is also noted that some taxa are rarely found in Turkey.

This paper deals with the Old World species of Eryngium L. which grow mostly in regions with a Mediteranean type climate. Two centres of diversity are visible: one in the Western Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula, Morocco), and the other one in South-West Asia. Distribution maps are presented for several species from South-West Asia, which is probably the genus' most important centre of diversity. A preliminary new classification of the genus Eryngium is presented, including a new combination (Eryngium subgenus Fruticosum (Wolff) Wörz stat. nov.). Isolating barriers between sympatric interfertile species are maintained by processes that occur within their hybrid zones. Although the effects of intrinsic selection on hybrid fitness are well known, less is understood about extrinsic fitness variation. At Tiryal Dağı, NE Turkey, Rhododendron x sochadzeae Charadze & Davlianidze (R. ponticum L. x caucasicum Pall.) forms large populations in which neither segregation nor backcrossing occur, in habitats intermediate between those of its parents. Using single-copy species-specific RAPD and ISSR markers, it was determined that all R. x sochadzeae plants are F1s, and that there are many separate genets present. Jasione L., a genus with small flowers in compact ebracteolate heads subtended by involucral bracts, is very isolated in the Campanulaceae. It is mainly a Mediterranean-European genus with c. 15, mostly polymorphic, species, which show evidence of recent speciation, possibly as recent as the last glaciation. In the west of its distributional range, where the greatest morphological variation occurs, there has been much recent investigation on morphology, anatomy, phenetics, molecular evidence and nomenclature. A Morphological And Anatomical Study On Endemic Alkanna Haussknechtii Bornm. (Boraginaceae), Critically Endangered In Turkey, Öznur Ergen Akçi̇n, Nezahat Kandemi̇r, Arzu Cansaran

Alkanna haussknechtii Bornm., which occurs only in the vicinity of Amasya, is critically endangered. The morphological and anatomical properties of the species, an endemic plant of the Irano-Turanian phytogeographic region, were investigated. The root is perennial. The leaves are ecvifacial and have stomata cells that are anisocytic and anomocytic. The stomata index is 18.048 on the upper epidermis and 15.428 on the lower epidermis.

This contribution spotlights the present research on the (oreal) subalpine to subnival mountain vegetation of Turkey. It concisely compiles our present knowledge, which is very heterogeneous in geographical terms. The situation is comparatively good in NW and W Anatolia and the western half of the Taurus range, from where a first consolidation stage can be reported. By contrast, the E Taurus remains a largely unexplored area. The Pontic chains have hitherto attracted a few local researchers only, and those important pioneering accounts cover less than half of the vegetation types actually present. The research project on the Useful Plants of the Bodrum Area has been collecting data since October 1999 on the traditional uses of plants for food, medicine, fodder, fuel, handicrafts and other purposes. A review of the factors contributing to the Flora's success is provided. The Flora of Turkey is a classical Flora with an additional supplement recently produced by Turkish botanists. Flora Hellenica is another example of a classical Flora. Some aspects of its background and production are briefly mentioned. Some morphological and anatomical characteristics of Crocus pallasii Goldb. subsp. turcicus B.Mathew and Crocus cancellatus Herbert subsp. damascenus (Herbert) B.Mathew, which flower in autumn, were investigated. Detailed descriptions of these two taxa of Crocus L., which occur in Şanlıurfa, are provided and their morphological characters are compared with those given in the Flora of Turkey. The specimens were collected from different parts of Şanlıurfa within C7 of the grid system; their habitat and population status were also determined. Their anatomical structure are illustrated.

Analyses were carried out to identify boron (B) hyperaccumulating plant species in an actively B- mined area of Kırka, Eskişehir, Turkey. Only 4 plant species, Gypsophila sphaerocephala Fenzl ex Tchihat. var. sphaerocephala (Caryophyllaceae), Gypsophila perfoliata L. (Caryophyllaceae), Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl. subsp. distans (Gramineae) and Elymus elongatus (Host) Runemark subsp. turcicus (McGuire) Melderis (Gramineae), were identified in the highest B- containing sections of the mine. The species were found growing successfully under high total (8900 mg kg^{-1}) and available (277 mg kg^{-1}) soil B concentrations. This study concerns the flora of the northern part of the Emirdağ nountains. According to Davis's grid system, the research area lies in B3 square. Four hundred and ninety-five taxa belonging to 279 genera and 70 families were found after the identification of 754 plant specimens collected from the research area. Forty-seven taxa are new records for the B3 grid square. The rate of endemism is 15.9%. The distribution of taxa within the phytogeographical regions is as follows: Irano-Turanian elements 17.9%, Mediterranean elements 8.8% and Euro-Siberians 5.4%. The floristic characteristics of Beydağı are given and the vascular plant species growing there are documented. Beydağı is situated in the south of Malatya province and is in the Irano-Turanian phytogeographical region. The research was carried out between 1986 and 2000. Two thousand one hundred plant specimens were collected from the area. At the end of the study, 873 vascular plant species (897 taxa, 185 subsp., 112 var.) and 357 genera belonging to 73 families were identified: 140 taxa (16.9%) are endemic to Turkey. This study was based on the macrofungi collected from İzmir province between 1993 and 2002. As a result of field and laboratory studies 55 taxa belonging to 28 families were identified and are presented as a list. Three of these (Geastrum badium Pers., G. fornicatum (Huds.) Hook and Collybia distorta (Fr.) Quél.) are new records for the Turkish macromycota.

This study includes the natural and cultivated plants in the Natural Conservation Area in Yumurtalık Lagoon. In an evalution of 450 herbarium specimens collected from this area in 1997 and 1998, a total of 186 genera and 234 species belonging to 65 families were identified: 223 of the 234 species are natural and 11 are cultivated. Three of the 234 taxa are endemics (1.3%), 26 taxa (11.6%) are Mediterranean elements, 13 taxa (5.8%) are East Mediterranean elements, 6 taxa (2.6%) are Irano-Turanian elements, 5 taxa (2.2%) are Euro-Siberian elements, and 1 taxon (0.4%) is a Hyrcano-Euxine element. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to assess the efficacy of Eucalyptus citriodora Hook., Ipomoea carnea Jacq., Cuminum cyminum L., Allium sativum L. and Hyoscyamus muticus L. leaf extracts, and of Streptomyces exfoliatus (Waksman & Curtis) Waksman & Henrici (S) and Trichoderma harzianum Rifai (T) in controlling Botrytis fabae, which causes chocolate spot disease in the faba bean. Life Strategies And Adaptations In Bryophytes From The Near And Middle East, Harald Kürschner

A review article on life strategies and ecomorphological adaptations (xerothalloid and xeropottioid life syndromes) of bryophytes is given, based on the hitherto known and analysed terrestrial, saxicolous and epiphytic communities of the Near and Middle East. The examples given impressively demonstrate common adaptive trends that arise convergently but independently in unrelated taxa when they evolve under similar habitat conditions. These functional types are important for the establishment, habitat maintenance and dispersal of species and indicate the relationships between site ecology, niche differentiation and species evolution. Their differentiation is a prime example of parallel evolution.
