An experiment was conducted in the field during 1966 on Maury silt loam soil to obtain information of the effects of agronomic factors on yield and value of Burley 21 tobacco . Ammonium nitrate fertilizer at varying rates, and concentrated super-phosphate and potassium sulfate at constant rates , were broadcast and disked in after plowing and before transplanting. All plots received irrigation water (sprinkler system) to supplement rainfall when soil moisture dropped below 60% of available moisture-holding capacity. A management study was designed to investigate the desirability of two management systems emphasizing (1) yield and (2) quality and a third system (3) aimed at achieving an acceptable level of both yield and quality. (These are hereafter referred to as the "high yield, " "quality, " and "yield and quality" systems, respectively.)
Two varieties, Burley 21 and Ky 10, were grown under the three management systems (outlined in Table 1) in 1/4 acre non-replicated plots at five locations in Kentucky in 1966 and at seven locations in 1967. A three-year or older sod was selected at each location. Phosphorus …

The principal objectives in breeding tobacco are yield, field and handling characteristics, disease resistance, and quality. Of these objectives, major emphasis has been placed on breeding disease-resistant varieties. Resistant varieties have provided one of the most effective means of combating many of the pathogens that attack the tobacco plant. However, the transfer of genes for disease resistance into susceptible varieties has been accompanied in many cases by other characteristics which are undesirable. It is often a difficult task to combine acceptable type, yield, and quality with desired factors for disease resistance into a single variety.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Approximately three and one-third million acres of native prairie are harvested annually in Nebraska for hay. In the four-year period 1948-1951, the State ranked first in wild hay production with an average yield of more than two and one-quarter million tons per year. This crop is an important natural resource in Nebraska's livestock industry. Studies were initiated in 1945 to determine the effects of time of cutting on the yield and feeding value of prairie hay in southeastern Nebraska. The chief purpose of these studies has been to determine the normal growth changes that occur in the corn plant at successive intervals when growing in the field, and to observe annual yield variations in relation to prevailing weather conditions. Aside from supplying information regarding the physiology of this crop, the data are of interest to the corn grower because they indicate comparative yields, shelling percentages, moisture contents, and feed constituents at various stages of development. Some data also are presented concerning the effects of frost, drouth, day length, and the economic value of tillers and seminal roots.

Investigations on factors affecting yield of sugar beets during the past two years at Newton and Garland, Utah, have shown two outstanding facts about irrigating sugar beets. First, the amount of water applied may not be as important as the time at which they receive it. Second, sugar beets should not be made to suffer for water in the early part of their growing season.
These observations suggest the need for further studies on method, time and quantity of irrigation. Further information on the most economical use of irrigation water for sugar beets would be of great value to the …

The depreciating effects of bunt or stinking smut (Tilletia levis Kuhn and tritici [Bjerk.] Wint.) upon the yield and quality of winter wheat in Nebraska and many other states are well known. The practical control of this disease through seed treatment has also been established and is being extensively practiced by growers. The object of experiments reported in this bulletin has been to determine principles according to which water is used by crops. In many agricultural districts, water is frequently a seriously limiting factor in crop production. It has been thought that some means might be devised through a correct understanding of the principles involved, whereby economy in the use of water in farm practice could be increased. In this effort there are two chief points of attack, namely, (1) adjusting the external factors to the needs of the plant, and (2) selecting plants adapted to the conditions.
