Swathing Field Crops In The South-West, R Snowball

Swathing is a long established method of haarvesting field crops, especially in parts of Europe and North America. It involves cutting the crop when the seed is nearly mature and laying it in a swath or windrow to dry. when the crop has dried it is harvested using conventional harvesting machinery with a pick-up attatchment.

On the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, an area prone to strong moist sea breezes, swathing barley is a common practice. More farmers along Western Australia's south coast are also swathing barley to reduce losses from conventional harvesting. Pod shattering losses of lupins and field …

Studies of the growth of plants on salt-affected soils have focused maily on the effects of salt. However, many salt-affected soils are also subject to waterlogging. Glasshouse experiments conducted by the Department of Agriculture have shown that although wheat growth is not greatly reduced by low levels of salt under well drained conditions, under waterlogged conditions such levels of salt can have a severe effect.

Cereal growers in western Australia have, traditionally, burned cereal stubbles. Burning stubble residues reduces weed seed populations and fungal pathogens, but its main purpose has been to eliminate straw which might cause blockages od seeding machinery and por see-bed preparation in the time critical seeding operation.

In 982, the Department of Agriculture began a project to determine whether wider spaced rows also depressed cereal yields in Western Australia. This article summarises some of the important results from that work.

Yellow spot is a serious leaf disease of wheat in Western Australia. It also occurs in Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. Yellow spot can appear as a severe leaf blight but generally the disease does not have the rapid epidemic development of wheat rust diseases. It builds up more slowly and is not as obvious in the crop, while caising appreciable yield loss.

When farm vehicles travel over moist soils they can create hardpans which can marledly reduce crop and pasture yields.

Research at Wongan Hills Research Station has shown that plant growth and nutrient uptake were affected for at least eight years after the original workings caused the hardpan.

The wheat disease stripe rust caused crop losses estimated at $20 million in New South Wales during an epidemis in 983. Economic crop losses were reported in neighbouring States and as far westas Ceduna in South Australia. In some States large areas were sprayed with fungacide at considerable cost to control disease spread.

Wheat stripe rust has not been found in Western Australia yet, but all current evidence indicates that it will eventually reach this State.When it does, it has the potential to cause considerable crop losses every year, unlike the spasmodic losses from stem rust, and it will greatly …

The trace element molybdenum is needed in very small amounts in nitrogen metabolisms of crops and pastures. Trials were mainly sited in areas normally receiving more than 450 mm average annual rainfall. Response curves were fitted to each set of data and then averaged to give overall response curves for each crop. There was little difference between the crops in absolute or percentage response to nitrogen fertiliser but the nitrogen fertiliser rate required for maximum yield was highest for wheat and lowest for oats.

The benefits of reducing tillage by use of herbicides for weed control emphasizes why research was started to study a fallow system where all tillage was replaced by herbicides. Wheat planting was then the only soil disturbing operation. Objectives of the research were to compare the effects of no-tillage (chemical), stubble-mulch and plow (bare fallow) systems of fallow on: 1. Grain yield. 2. Grain protein. 3. Residue retention. 4. Soil nitrate-nitrogen accumulation. 5. Soil water accumulations during fallow. Data presented are in the form of a progress report. These experiments will continue.

Absolute yield increases tended to be greater for wheat than rape at 63 per cent of the nitrogen responsive sites, but percentage yield increases and rate of N for maximum yield tended to be greater for rape than for wheat. When average response curves over all trials were considered, there was little difference between the two crops in terms of percentage responsiveness and N rate for maximum yield in areas with less than 460 mm average rainfall, but in higher rainfall areas the response to N was higher.

This is the first report of results from a high protein-high lysine observation (HP-HL) nursery organized in 1974 by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, under a contract with the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State. Primary objectives of this nursery are to: (1) Systematically provide breeders and cooperators with superior genetic germplasm for elevated levels of protein and/or lysine. (2) Test the degree of expression of the high protein and high lysine traits in a diverse array of environments.

In 1978 farmers in the soft wheat area will be able to grow the higher yielding variety Tincurrin.

It is recommended for general sowing to replace all varieties grown at present in the soft wheat areas as defined.Exceptions may prevail in areas prone to rust snd septoria problems.

In 1975 approximately 350,000 acres were double-cropped using small grain and soybeans in Kentucky. Due to the low acreage of winter barley (48,000 acres) most of the soybeans were either planted by no-till or conventional means following winter wheat. The major problem with winter wheat in a double-cropping system is that the date of planting for soybeans is delayed. Research at the West Kentucky Experiment Station at Princeton indicates that this delay can reduce soybean yields from 7 to 11 bushels per acre depending upon the soybean variety used. Statistical examination of data associated with wheat grown in Western Australia during the 29- year period ending in 1974 shows that areas sown and total production increased substantially. Average yields and protein per hectare both increased significantly, while wheat protein percentage increased slightly, but not significantly.

Recommendations for grain crop varieties grown in Western Australia are based on the results of field trials carried out each year by the Department of Agriculture at some 50 sites throughout the agricultural areas.

New varieties are tested directly against existing commercial varieties in large scale field trials for several years. Yield and quality results are analysed and market requirements are studied before recommendations are formulated.

This article gives information on the varieties of a range of crops now recommended for growing in Western Australia.

The protein and lysine content of wheat can be altered by breeding only if genetic variability exists for these traits. Lysine is a nutritionally limiting amino acid in wheat protein. Protein and lysine analyses of the common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection indicated that variability does exist for these traits. Some of the variability for protein and lysine among wheats of the World Collection may not be genetic in origin, because all the 12,000 wheats analyzed were not grown in the same environment. Stem rust of wheat is probably the most damaging plant disease in the world. The rust fungus attacks stems, leaves and heads, producing characteristic red-brown pustules which affect the plant's ability to fill out the grain. Yield loss is directly related to the amount of rust in the crop and the length of time the crop is infected.

In Western Australia it is not uncommon to find rust on crops in mid-October, but usually there is negligible loss of yield. In fact this pattern is quite normal throughout the world: In general, rust arrives too late to cause an epidemic. …

Variety recommendations for 1975 were derived mainly from results of 259 trials conducted at 60 sites in 1973. The main programme included wheat, oat, barley and lupin trials sown at 43 sites in wheatbelt areas; biscuit wheat trials on 12 sites in southern medium and high rainfall areas, and special hard wheat trials on 12 heavy land sites in low rainfall areas.

Also included was a series of early-sowing trials with lupins, wheat and barley; linseed trials in southern coastal areas, and preliminary wheat, oat and barley variety trials on research stations.

Protein and lysine contents of 12,613 common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection were determined in order to identify wheats that may be sources of genes for high protein and high lysine. Results indicate that significant genetic differences in protein and lysine content probably exist among world collection common wheats. Selection criteria have been developed for further evaluation of World Collection lines high in protein and lysine content.

Three separate quality classes or categories of wheat are now received by C.B.H. These are a soft biscuit wheat, a hard bread wheat and a mixed grain suitable as a filler wheat in bread-making and for making noodles.

In this article the basis of quality differences between these classes of wheat is described and some of the terms and concepts used in distinguishing between cultivars (varieties) and classes of wheat are discussed.
