Aeration Strategies And Fan Cost Comparisons For Wheat In Mid-South Production Regions, Thomas C. Bridges, Michael D. Montross, Samuel G. Mcneill
Aeration Strategies And Fan Cost Comparisons For Wheat In Mid-South Production Regions, Thomas C. Bridges, Michael D. Montross, Samuel G. Mcneill
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Numerous factors influence the sizing of aeration fans for summer-harvested crops. Thirty years of weather data for Lexington, Kentucky, were analyzed and the cost of aeration was compared for two axial fans (afan1, afan2) and one centrifugal fan (cfan1). Aeration costs were defined as the sum of the following components: the cost of owning the fan, the cost of electricity for operating the fan, a cost for wheat shrinkage during aeration, and a cost for dry matter loss (DML). The fans were selected to deliver airflow rates of approximately one, two, and three times the recommended aeration rate of 0.11 …

Topcrop W.A. State Focus 2002-2003 Wheat Protein, Alison Slade, Jeremy Lemon
Bulletins 4000 -
The State Focus program is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) in conjunction with TOPCROP to provide grower groups with a new learning concept. The concept was developed in Victoria and has been adopted by South Australia and Western Australia.
Wheat protein was selected as the Western Australian State Focus in response to a wide-ranging consultation of grower groups, researchers and the TOPCROP West management group. As crop yield potential increases through matching varieties to growing season length, weed and disease control, and timely sowing systems, the crop’s demand for nitrogen increases. Unless the demand is matched …

Organic Wheat : A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy
Organic Wheat : A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy
Bulletins 4000 -
Many people believe that organic agriculture systems can only work in high rainfall regions. However, some of Australia’s most successful organic farmers are the experienced organic wheatbelt growers who produce cereal, pulse and oilseed crops in different regions and soil types across the country.
Wheat is the major organic cereal crop grown in Australia - predominantly noodle and breadmaking wheats for export markets.
Farming systems developed by modern organic wheat growers can differ significantly in concept, strategies and techniques from those used by conventional growers. Successful conversion to organic requires careful planning and integration of the whole farming system over …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This circular is a progress report of variety trials conducted by personnel of the Agronomy Department and the South Central, West Central and Panhandle Research and Extension Centers and their associated agricultural laboratories. Conduct of experiments and publication of results is a joint effort of the Agricultural Research Division and the Cooperative Extension Service. Tests were supported in part by fees paid by commercial seed companies and the Nebraska Wheat Board. The 2002 estimated winter wheat yield for Nebraska was a 32 bushels per acre from 1,450,000 harvested acres. The total production of winter wheat for the state was 46,400,000 …

This circular is a progress report of variety trials conducted by personnel of the Agronomy Department and the South Central, West Central and Panhandle Research and Extension Centers and their associated agricultural laboraties. The 2000 estimated winter wheat yield for Nebraska was a 36 bushels per acre from 1,750,000 harvested acres. The total production of winter wheat for the state was 63,000,000 bushels. This circular reports data from winter wheat trials conducted throughout Nebraska. Entries included varieties or hybrids and promising experimental strains from Nebraska and surrounding states and private breeders. This was the ninetenth year for privately developed varieties. …

Technical Bulletins
• Wheat leaf rust (Puccinia recondita f.sp. tritici) is specific to wheat and triticale. A single pathotype (designated 104-1,2,3,(6),(7),11) has dominated in W.A. since 1990. Wheat leaf rust regularly survives the non-cropping summer in varying quantities, usually sufficient to occur at least to a limited extent (particularly in southern regions) each year. The disease develops rapidly between 15 and 22°C when moisture (including dew) is non-limiting. The highest yield increase attributed directly to control of leaf rust in W.A. is 37 per cent. However the disease is synergistically damaging in combination with septoria leaf blotches. In Esperance in …
Accelerating Variety Release With Double Haploids, Sue Broughton
Accelerating Variety Release With Double Haploids, Sue Broughton
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The use of plant tissue culture to produce special lines called doubled haploids is reducing the time taken to breed new varieties of cereal crops by up to three years. Sue Broughton outlines what doubled haploids are, how they are produced, and why they have been able to short circuit the usual lengthy breeding process.

Durum Wheat : A Potential New Crop For Western Australia, Alfredo Impiglia, Wal Anderson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The export orientation of our grains industries and the current favourable position of durum wheat in the world trade make this an opportune time to examine the propsects for durum wheat in Western Australia. Alfredo Impiglia and Wal Anderson summarise the known requirements for consistant production of high quality durum that will lead to the establshment of a new industry in Western Australia.

Weeds Can Poison Crops, Aik Hock Cheam
Weeds Can Poison Crops, Aik Hock Cheam
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Weeds can interfere with the growth of a crop simply by competing with the crop for nutrients, moisture and light. But some weeds also release chemicals that inhibit the germination and growth of crop plants; the technical term for this is allelopathy. Aik Cheam outlines the problems caused by two common weeds and the discusses preventative measures.
Positive Price Outlook For Wheat : Implications For Wa Agriculture, Alan Haagensen, Ian Wilkinson
Positive Price Outlook For Wheat : Implications For Wa Agriculture, Alan Haagensen, Ian Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
After a 40 year period over which wheat prices have dropped by an average of 2.7 per cent annually in real terms, fundamental changes in wheat supply and demand look set to reverse this trend. It is possible that real prices could increase by as much as 4 per cent anually in the medium term.
Alan Haagensen and Ian Wilkinson look at the forecasts for wheat prices and outline the forces that will influence world supply and demands for wheat.
Holding Our Edge In Noodle Wheat, Graham Crosbie
Holding Our Edge In Noodle Wheat, Graham Crosbie
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
For many years, the Japanese milling and noodle industries have regarded Australian Standard White (ASW) wheat from Western Australia as the best in the world for the manufacture of white, salted Japanese noodles known as 'udon' (pronounced oo-don).
Recently, the Australian Wheat Board has also developed a significant market for this wheat type in South Korea, where it has been readily accepted for the production of Korean dried noodles.
The Wheat Board has estimated the total market demand from Japan and South Korea for this type of wheat to be 1.0-1.2 million tonnes, equivalent to about 20-25 per cent of …
