Soybean (Glycine max) grain contains approximately 40% protein and 6.5% nitrogen (N) on an elemental basis. Therefore, the plant requires an abundant N supply throughout its life cycle, and symbiotic N fixation of soybean with Bradyrhizobium japonicum provides 40 to 85% of the soybean N. Although soybean cultivars have been genetically engineered to withstand the herbicide glyphosate, B. japonicum grown in culture is sensitive to glyphosate. We hypothesized that glyphosate applied to glyphosate-tolerant soybean would inhibit nodulation by B. japonicum unless B. japonicum could also be selected for glyphosate tolerance. During the spring of 1996, many tobacco producers used a water soluble 20-10-20 fertilizer in their float beds, only to have to throw out the stunted sickly plants that resulted, and start over. The fertilizer that caused the problems turned out to have 100% of the nitrogen (N) as urea-N. It was hypothesized that the poor growth was related to with the conversion of the urea-N to other forms of N. There have been numerous other cases where producers using fertilizers high in urea-N or ammonium-N (NH4-N) have had problems with stunted plant growth. Systematic sampling of springs, tiles, and wells in Kentucky, as part of a recent statewide program to assess agricultural impacts on water quality, showed that NO3 concentrations in these shallow ground water sources varied tremendously. The NO3 concentration could be correlated with flow rate; higher when ground water recharge flushed NO3 from soil in winter and spring, and lower or non detectable in summer and fall when less NO3 leaching occurred. Depending on the season, NO3 concentrations ranged from < 1 to > 10 ppm NO3-N in almost half of the sites. For example, the water in …

For many crops, band placement of fertilizer offers agronomic, economic, and environmental advantages over commonly used preplant broadcast applications. Drill banding most of the nitrogen (N) fertilizer 12 inches to both sides of the row for tobacco shortly after transplanting greatly aIleviates manganese toxicity and other nutrient imbalances, improves early growth and yield, and offers increased efficiency of N use. Nitrogen fertilizers applied after transplanting are less likely to be leached during excess rainfall events that commonly occur in April and early May in Kentucky.

Many turfgrass managers apply a portion of the total yearly N to cool-season turfgrasses in the late fall (November). The purpose of this field study was to compare fertilization programs with and without N applications in November using both slow-release and soluble N sources. Turfs of two different cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L. cv. Baron and cv. Newport) growing on a Flanagan silt loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Aquic Argiudoll) received 10 fertilization programs utilizing urea, isobutylidene diurea (IBDU), or sulfur-coated urea (SCU). Concern has been expressed during recent years that sulfur may have become more limiting for plant growth and subsequently ruminant animal nutrition than was expected. This likelihood is based largely on the fact that (a) the inherent sulfur content of fertilizer phosphates has greatly diminished with declining use of normal superphosphate in manufacture of mixed fertilizers, (b) increased regulatory effect on burning of high sulfur fuels, and (c) increased use of nitrogen fertilizers for production of animal feeds. Excessive water is one of the largest contributors to the inefficient use of nitrogen in Kentucky. Because of this, nitrogen is often lost by both leaching and,denitrification. The amount, of these losses can be great depending on soil type and weather. Well-drained soils in Kentucky have been shown to lose less nitrogen than poorly drained soils. The nitrogen lost from well drained soils is usually due, to leaching. The nitrogen in the soil, even soon after applying non-nitrate forms of fertilizer N, is mostly in the water soluble nitrate form. When more water falls onto a well-drained soil than the …

Studies in north-central Nebraska from 1975 through 1977: 1. Evaluated the malting barley production potential of the irrigated sandy soils of the region. 2. Measured the effect of application of N and S on yield and quality of barley grown for malting purposes. 3. Investigated the ability of N analysis of barley in the vegetative stage to predict protein content of grain at harvest. Data gathered lead to the following conclusions: 1. The benefits of reducing tillage by use of herbicides for weed control emphasizes why research was started to study a fallow system where all tillage was replaced by herbicides. Wheat planting was then the only soil disturbing operation. Objectives of the research were to compare the effects of no-tillage (chemical), stubble-mulch and plow (bare fallow) systems of fallow on: 1. Grain yield. 2. Grain protein. 3. Residue retention. 4. Soil nitrate-nitrogen accumulation. 5. Soil water accumulations during fallow. Data presented are in the form of a progress report. These experiments will continue.

Of all the plant nutrients, nitrogen has been subjected to the most extensive study. The amount of inorganic nitrogen in the soil is small while the quantity needed annually by crops is comparatively large. Of the macronutrients usually applied in commercial fertilizers, nitrogen seems to have the quickest and most pronounced effect on plant growth.

Kenhy fescue is a new, improved variety of tall fescue which has recently been released by the University of Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and the U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service (see University of Kentucky publication AGR-60, "Kenhy A New Tall Fescue Variety"). Seed of this variety should become available to farmers in limited quantities in the summer 1977. The purpose of this report is to provide information on how this newly developed fescue variety produces as affected by time and rate of nitrogen application.

Soil moisture conditions can have a large effect on crop responses to nitrogen fertilization. Kentucky's usual climatic pattern of periods of heavy rainfall and relatively warm temperatures during the winter and spring seasons influences expected yield responses of corn to applied nitrogen. If nitrogen fertilizer is applied in late winter or early spring, some of it may be lost before the plants have made sufficient growth to take up appreciable quantities. The amount of loss that might be expected will be influenced by the amount of rainfall, temperature, amount of organic matter and drainage of the soil.

Nitrate nitrogen is the dominant form of plant-available nitrogen in soils, since even ammonium nitrogen is rapidly converted to nitrate nitrogen under Kentucky field conditions. Nitrogen in the nitrate form can be lost by leaching in the drainage water and by denitrification when the soil is saturated with water for a relatively short period of time. With the increased cost and short supply of nitrogen fertilizers, it is especially important that applications be made at a time and in a way that will minimize losses.

Many pastures in eastern Nebraska and surrounding areas have gradually decreased in productivity. Over a long period of heavy grazing, native warm-season grasses have been largely replaced with Kentucky bluegrass, other less desirable grasses, and broadleaf weeds. A program was started in 1949 to study the effectiveness of protection from grazing in changing the botanical composition and yield of a pasture where the predominant forage was Kentucky bluegrass. Several weed control treatments were included in this experiment to determine if mowing or spraying would hasten the return of more desirable forage. When urea is broadcast and not worked into the soil there is a risk of some of the nitrogen being lost to the atmosphere as ammonia. In an effort to measure the effectiveness of urea compared to ammonium nitrate as sources of nitrogen for topdressing on established grass sod, an experiment comparing these two sources at rates to supply 0, 50, 100 and 150 pounds of nitrogen per acre was conducted in 1971.

Knowledge of nutrient content of tobacco and of removal of nutrients from soil is essential to developing sound fertilization practices for tobacco. Quantities of nutrient elements taken·up by tobacco vary widely. This is because of variations in variety, soil fertility level, fertilizer application, soil moisture, plant population, and other environmental and cultural factors . We conducted the present study to determine the effects of applied N and suckering practice on the content of mineral elements in certain plant parts of burley tobacco.

Relatively large amounts of nitrogen from fertilizers and manures commonly are used in burley tobacco production. Growers are currently estimated to apply between 150 and 400 pounds of actual N per acre. Fertilization of burley with nitrogen significantly affects the physical and chemical characteristics of cured leaf and produces changes in yield and value. On most soils, leaf yields usually are increased by applications of N fertilizer, but the amount of yield increase per unit of applied fertilizer N varies widely between soils. An experiment was conducted in the field during 1966 on Maury silt loam soil to obtain information of the effects of agronomic factors on yield and value of Burley 21 tobacco . Ammonium nitrate fertilizer at varying rates, and concentrated super-phosphate and potassium sulfate at constant rates , were broadcast and disked in after plowing and before transplanting. All plots received irrigation water (sprinkler system) to supplement rainfall when soil moisture dropped below 60% of available moisture-holding capacity. Earlier research has shown that higher leaf yields of burley tobacco result from topping and controlling sucker (axillary bud) growth. Suckering practices which provide the greatest degree of sucker control generally result in highest leaf yields . Chemically suckering with maleic hydrazide (MH-30) and other chemicals provides for a higher degree of control than most hand sucker ing practices although hand sucker ing at frequent intervals may produce leaf yields comparable to those from use of maleic hydrazide. Experiments on two farmers' properties demonstrated that legume pastures increase the fertility of northern wheatbelt soils.

Crops on legume pastures had higher yields than crops on volunteer pasture.

The experiments also indicated the most productive legume species for each situation and demonstrated that nitrogen added by legumes has a residual effect in the soil.

What happens to the nitrogen a farmer applies as fertilizer each spring?

First, let us consider the forms of nitrogen normally applied, and then attempt to trace what happens to the nitrogen once it is added to the soil. The average complete fertilizer contains approximately 70 percent of its nitrogen in the ammonium nitrogen form (NH4), about 10 percent in the urea form (this is quickly converted to ammonium nitrogen), and the remaining 20 percent in the nitrate nitrogen form (NO3) .
