Agronomy Of Low Alkaloid Lupins - Preliminary Investigations, C M. Francis Jan 1969

Agronomy Of Low Alkaloid Lupins - Preliminary Investigations, C M. Francis

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Although the value of leguminous crops in the pattern of Western Australia's agriculture has been recognised for a number of years (Gladstones (1968))*, they have received comparatively little scientific attention. Whilst one such crop, the "sweet" lupin, has occasionally produced highly profitable yields, there is nevertheless a high incidence of near failures which may to a large degree be logically attributed to lack of knowledge of the basic agronomy of the crop. As a preliminary to more extensive trials at a large number of locations, it was proposed to study the effect of some basic agronomic practices (and of the …

Lupin And Serradella Inoculation Experiments, D L. Chatel Jan 1969

Lupin And Serradella Inoculation Experiments, D L. Chatel

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

BACKGROUND: During 1967 there were a number of reports of poor establishment of Weiko and Uniwhite lupins. Because of the possibility of either delayed nodulation or insufficient nitrogen fixation being involved, an experiment was conducted during 1968 to examine a range of lupin rhizobia isolates in the field (a summary of this experiment was circulated during 1969). In this experiment two strains, WU425 and WU43, showed sufficient promise to warrant additional testing in 1969.

Ammonium Nitrate Vs Urea, M G. Mason Jan 1969

Ammonium Nitrate Vs Urea, M G. Mason

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Ammonium nitrate is a source of nitrogen containing half

its nitrogen in the ammonium form and half in the nitrate form.

Some properties are set out in comparison with urea in the

following table.

Ammonium nitrate has an advantage over urea in that it can

be topdressed onto the surface of the soil and left uncovered

without a danger of loss of nitrogen to the atmosphere. When urea

is left uncovered on the surface of the soil losses of nitrogen occur

through volatilisation of ammonia during the hydrolysis of the urea.

Such losses with ammonium nitrate are only likely to …

Soil And Tissue Testing For Potassium., Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

No meaningful conclusions can be drawn until the multiple regression analysis comparing soil and plant parameters with level of response has been completed. Similarly it is extremely dangerious to extrapolate results obtained from any one experiement in a particular district to the general farm situation. In addition these results represent only 1 rather atypical season and so need to be verified by additional calibration trials. in 1973 (40) and 1974 (20).

Cropping Investigations, M L. Poole Jan 1969

Cropping Investigations, M L. Poole

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The Mexican semi-dwarf wheat varieties have performed very well under high fertility conditions overseas. There is considerable evidence that they have greater potential for yield than the Australia spring varieties because of greater number of flowers set per spikelet. In this trial Falcon and Pitic were grown under almost optimal conditions for dryland wheat growing in Western Australia. The trial was planted early (21st May) into a completely weed free seedbed. Nutrition was near optimal. Seasonal conditions were near perfect. Grain yields were extremely high for Western Australia. Pities reputed superior potential for yield/unit area was not expressed under these …

Time Of Application Of Solid Nitrogen Fertilisers., M G. Mason

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The current recommendations for time of application of soild nitrogen fertilisers such as urea, ammonium nitrate and sulphate of ammonia are:

Zone A: These fertilisers should be applied as close to seeding as possible.

Zone B: As for zone A except on very sandy soils which are very prone to leaching, where application can be delayed 2-3 weeks.

Zone C: Applications should be delayed about 3 weeks after seeding.

Long Term Rotation Trials, Ian Rowland

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The object of these trials is to attempt to determine the best rotation for each area or at least give some guidelines for recommendations as to the optimum rotation. Also to determine the effect of various pasture phases on the performance of the following crops and the number of crops required to utilise any accrued benefit from the pasture. In addition the trials on the Salmon Gums Research Station (68SG5) will attempt to compare cereal rotations on both volunteer and barrel medic pastures. It is also hoped to be able to get some estimate of grazing production from barrel medic …

Nitrogen Use On First Crops After Legume Pasture, M G. Mason

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Apart from the normal factors affecting response of cereals to nitrogen fertilizers, i.e. length of growing season, rainfall, soil type etc, there are other factors which affect the response after a legume pasture. these factors include length of the previous legume phase and how good was the stand of legumes. Unfortunately for most of the trials in the past, involving the use of nitrogen on first crops after legumes, this information is not available.

Bulletin No 3609 - Land Development In The South Eastern Wheatbelt, G T. Halpin, P. Nelson Oct 1968

Bulletin No 3609 - Land Development In The South Eastern Wheatbelt, G T. Halpin, P. Nelson

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Interest in the development of light lands in the south-eastern wheatbelt was spurred by the many ex-servicemen seeking farms after the 1939-45 World War.

Previous attempts to develop this area had been frustrated by poor crop yields, and by the poor carrying capacity of those volunteer pastures which developed on cleared land.

Research into reasons for the poor crop results was begun in 1948-49 with trials sown by Messrs Smith and Halpin between Borden and Lake Grace. The results clearly showed the important role played by copper and zinc in successful crop growth. Since then, field trials have been conducted …

Land Resource Evaluation - Ninety Mile Tank Report On Trials Conducted 1968, 1969 And 1970 By Plant Research Division And Wheat And Sheep Division, J W. Gartrell

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

In the late 1920's the seven million acres of virgin land between Hyden and Salmon Gums were considered for settlement under the "3,500 farms scheme" because it constituted "practically the only large area of wheat lands in a suitable climatic zone not then settled in Australia" (Teakle 1939). At that time the sandy scrubplain soils were more a liability than an asset because methods of profitably farming the light soils had not then been evolved. These useless scrubplains merely increased the distances between patches of' more f'ertile soils. The scheme for settlement was based mainly on the potential of' the …

Bulletin No 3547 - Kimberley Research Station - Progress Report 1968, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Rivers flowing to the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Timor Sea have been estimated by hydrologists to carry about three times the water transported annually over the Murray drainage system and the South Eastern slopes which, together, comprise the highly settled agricultural areas of South Eastern Australia.

In 1945, the North Australian Development Committee recommended research in the Ord-Victoria rivers region as a first step toward ultimate agricultural development of this Northern potential and, in 1946, the Kim- berley Research Station commenced operations under the joint control of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization and the Western Australian Department …

Granular Fertiliser, C R. Hale

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

There is general agreement that granulation of fertilisers improves their physical characteristics with respect to handling, storage and distribution in the field. These physical advantages rather tan any established agronomic reason appear to be responsible for the increasing use of granular fertiliser.

Leaflet No 1003 - The Salt Problem In The Wheat Belt, G. H. Burvill Jan 1950

Leaflet No 1003 - The Salt Problem In The Wheat Belt, G. H. Burvill

Bulletins 1 - 2999

IN the wheat belt of Western Australian bare patches in farm paddocks are often seen. Many are bare, or almost bare, because of too much salt in the soil. The excess of salt prevents the germination of seeds, or kills living plants, because it causes the water supply for germination or growth to be cut off. This salt problem is so serious in places that single farms or groups of farms have been ruined; wheat growing on them has become unprofitable.

Bulletin 119 - Take-All Of Wheat And Similar Diseases Of Cereals, W. M. Carne, J. G.C. Campbell

Bulletins 1 - 2999

This important disease, known also as Footrot, Blackleg, and Whiteheads, affects wheat principally, but also occurs on barley, rye, and certain grasses. In a very few instances it has been known to attack oats, but this is so rare that oats may be regarded for practical purposes as free from attack. Of the grasses attacked the most important, from a farming point of view in Western Australia, are Bailey Grass (Hordeum murinum), Silver Grass (Festuca bromoides and F. myuros), and the so-called Spear grasses (Bromus spp.). These annual grasses are very common in the wheat belt.

Bulletin 105 - Pedigree Selection Of Seed At The Chapman And Merredin Experiment Farms, Geo L. Sutton

Bulletins 1 - 2999

A Paper read before the Royal Society of the Royal Society of Western Australia, 12th October,1921.

"Pedigree" or "Pure Line" selection is that system of selection under which the choice is made, not. solely because of the attractive appearance of the plant, but because of its ability to transmit its good qualities to the progeny. Such a system requires, and the method of selection ensures, that the qualities sought after shall be hereditary. For this purpose a record of ancestry is essential, hence the use of the term "pedigree."

Bulletin No 81 - The Improvement Of Pastures With Notes On The Pasture Trefoils In Western Australia, E. A. Mann, D. A. Herbert

Bulletins 1 - 2999

Agriculture can be roughly divided for practical purposes into two large divisions, those of animal husbandry and vegetable husbandry. It is with the former that this pamphlet is chiefly concerned and its object is to contribute, it possible, in some small measure towards the problem of how to increase time stock carrying capacity of our natural pasture lands. it is unnecessary to dwell upon the importance of this question, especially in relation to the remarkable developments which are taking place in time wool-growing industry in the Southern and more coastal areas of Western Australia.
