Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
CONCLUSIONS This trial has confirmed the field observation that 2,4,5-T whilst giving good initial control of Pennyroyal, fails after a number of years. Round up has a far longer term effect. This can only be attributed to a more complete initial kill as both herbicides are essentially non residual. Further work needs to be conducted on Round up in combination with soil residual chemicals or multiple applications to overcome the problem of reinfestation from seed reserves. 81A1 -01

Conclusions 1. The volume of application with water affected the results obtained. The visual results of Treatment 1 suggested it was not an acceptable commercial result and the plant counts support this conclusion. Treatments 2 and 3 looked very similar and were very similar and were very acceptable results. 2. The height of spraying affected the results in that where the plane had to start climbing to pass over trees, the effectiveness dropped off. 3. Spray drift could be a problem because of the risk of causing damage to trees and native vegetation. Severe damage was seen on trees at …

SUMMARY The effects of lime and molybdenum applications on wheat and subterranean Clover were studied further. Wheat. In relation to lime use, my aim is to develop soil tests to be used to predict when a soil requires lime to produce maximum yield, and to predict the optimum rate of lime. Using the results from field trials commenced in 1980 and 1981 the soil parameters which may be used to predict lime responses in wheat have been narrowed down. From the relationships between soil data and lime responses it appears that soil ph (measured in 1:5 H20 or 1:5 N …

Summary of experimental results, 1981. Geraldton: Brown spot (Pleiochaeta setosa) was widespread. Root rots were not considered generally to be a problem in 1981.Three Springs: Fungal root rots were commonly observed. Brown spot leaf and stem infection was also prevalent. Moora: Brown spot was the most prevalent. Northam: Crops were generally healthy. Albany: Crops were generally healthy Sclerotinia being present. Bridgetown: Brown spot was the main disease present. Root rots were also present. In December, a widespread disorder occurred, Late brown spot infection is suspected. An important point emerging from the programme is that often the lines showing Phomopsis resistance …

Bulletin No 3993 - The Control Of Saffron Thistle, G. A. Pearce
Bulletins - 3000 - 3999
Saffron thistle is a primary noxious weed and is widespread throughout the drier parts of Western Australia. When growing in pasture its prickly growth habit discourages animals from grazing amongst it so that its presence results in the loss of feed. In crops it reduces yield and results in dockage when seed is found in harvested grain.
