The most promising varieties in last year's trials were the 2 row crossbreds W44 and W45 and the 6 row white grained variety Atlas 57.
BARLEY variety trials were located on four Research Stations and on farmers' properties at Northampton, Tammin and Mt. Barker. Brief details of the characteristics of the varieties and crossbreds under test were given in a previous article.

Agronomy Notes
Selection of barley and oat varieties is important to growers of these small grains. Tests are conducted across Kentucky by the University of Kentucky Agronomy Department to determine yield, winter hardiness, disease resistance, standability, and other characteristics important to efficient production. Planting dates are more important for these two crops than for wheat and rye because of winter freeze damage. The best planting dates for barley and oats run from September 1 to September 20. Later plantings are made in Kentucky but are subject to more damage from cold weather. Increased planting rates in barley tend to improve yield in …

ROOT ROTS of wheat and barley are caused by several fungi, the most important in Western Australia being Fusarium spp., Helminthosporium sativum and Ophiobolus graminis.
Local surveys have shown that the incidence of each organism varies with district and also depends on other factors, such as seasonal conditions and cultural practices.
The relative susceptibility of wheat and barley to these fungi has never been studied in detail under local conditions, although many such investigations have been conducted overseas.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
In 1951 a research program was started at the University of Nebraska to compare the developmental effects of thermal neutrons and X rays on different crop seeds. Three crops, barley, tomato and maize, were chosen for additional information involving induced chromosomal aberrations and seedling mutations. The maize investigations are presented in this bulletin, along with a comparison among the three crops with respect to irradiation effects.

NET Blotch is the commonest disease of barley in Western Australia, attacking all commercial varieties and causing considerable damage to foliage of maturing crops.
Despite its prevalence, net blotch is rarely the cause of a serious crop loss.

SCALD is a common disease of barley during late winter-early spring and causes considerable damage to the foliage of many crops.

Barley, during the past three decades, has been used considerably for the study of linkage groups and character inheritance. The commercial varieties are diploids, having seven pairs of chromosomes. Six linkage groups have been established. According to studies on interchange by Kramer et al. (1954), two linkage groups, formerly designated as III and VII, may be separate arms of the same chromosome. They are now generally considered as one linkage group.
Though more than two hundred characters have been investigated, less than sixty have been assigned relative positions on genetic maps. In many cases, selection for good characters is …

Barley has had wide acceptance not only as a cultivated crop but also as an excellent source of genetic material. Barley was being used in inheritance studies by Tschermak when he rediscovered Mendel's laws of heredity. Since then barley has become one of the most widely used plants for genetic studies known today.
More than 100 characters have been investigated indicating the relative ease of classification. There are 7 linkage groups corresponding to the 7 chromosomes in which 2 or more characters have been located as reported by Robertson (1939). Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
It is the purpose of this paper to report the effects of thermal-neutron irradiation of maize and barley kernels on subsequent germination, plant establishment, and early plant development. Comparisons are made with equivalent neutron treatments of maize pollen, results of which have been reported in part in previous publications.

Due to the commercial importance of barley many hybridization studies have been prosecuted in an effort to produce superior economic strains.
